come on cocoa!

cocoapuffs, please think before you speak! your whole response thread is like saying "hey just replace the house if the window is broken!" Yes, apple at first replaced the whole phone and thats because they were in the intro phase of a new product. So the swap the whole unit to capture data about whatever failed and figure out of its a trend or not. Then as they gather data, they can say for sure doing specific repairs, like a display swap, would be much more economical, and make much more sense.

I sure hope you are 14, otherwise think a little. I used to be a "genius" and replacing the display takes a few minutes longer than replacing the display and the customer gets to walk out with the phone exactly as it came in with all their numbers and pictures, only fully functional, as opposed to leaving with a blank phone and having to go through the long process of resync-ing once they return home.

Sheesh!

Apple has never shied away from replacing the phone with refurb, and difference of cost have never been the issue, so why would they care now. All I am saying is on a busy day, replacing the display is wasting time whenreplacing the phone takes 1/5 of the time, and the cost really doesn't matter between the two.

It doesn't make sense, why would they replace the display when it's much simpler to replace the phone with a refurb.

Simpler for who? the 3G and 3GS display is a replaceable unit/part as opposed to the 2G. When i had issues with my screen i was first offered a 20 min screen replacement but they were out of parts so they swap the phone

Its actually easier and cheaper (since its the most common part to go iffy) for Apple to replace the screen than the whole phone since its easier to package/transport one part than a whole unit and the manufacturer covers the cost of defective units

Compared to Apple taking a defective phone back to the factory, diagnosing the issue, fixing/replacing it, reconditioning the phone, packing AND shipping it back for reuse

Its also less of a hassle for end users who don't always have a backup

Back to what I said earlier, obviously we're not on the same page.

I guess I'll spend the extra time to explain my reasoning.

5 minutes to replace the phone with refurb, which is practically new. 30 minutes to replace the display, which could still have issues relating to other hardware glitch. Without other information, it just doesn't make sense why genius bar would have chose the more time consuming route. They may be out of the refurb units, which is the obvious reason behind their decision.

Going back to the intent of my initial response, which I was simply stating what I thought was unusual, and the response isn't attempting to answer nor ask any question. Kind of like your intent for this thread in the first place, which doesn't really serve any purpose either.
It was 5-10 mins to replace the screen, it was very quick. The Genius said it wouldn't be long and he was right.
I see where you are coming from and I do understand. At 1st when he said he would replace the screen I thought it would have to be shipped out or something also.

It was and still is the only option that would have worked for me.
I can't imagine having to restart all the games I have purchased.
Re-enter all my info in certain apps, it was a no brainer for me.

also if you have ever worked in the retail/cell phone industry on a busy day you deal usually with a bunch of pushy and needy people. so when you get someone that is nice and in a good mood you would rather spend a little more time helping them then dealing with the person behind them that is pissed off at the world lol.. you take long enough time with what your doing someone can deal with the mad people lol.. just my opinion..

It takes 5 minutes to replace an iPhone screen. Where are some of you getting 10-25min or 30minutes?

I've done it myself, it's 2 screws + suction cup. Lift it up and take out the ribbon cables carefully. Put them back in with the new display and snap it on...

It takes longer for them to create the service form and have you sign the work than it does for them to replace it.

And also to the people saying it's easier to just replace the entire phone... why should they give you a phone that looks brand new for your beat up phone? Some of you are just asking for way too much from Apple.

cocoa puffs you are adding nothing to this topic

you basically keep repeating your statement over and over. No one else agrees with you. More importantly this has nothing to do with the OP, and he is happy with his decision ... DROP IT

You're basically spamming/trolling his thread

Not everyone has the free time to go back to the apple store 20x to replace their phone over and over ( as you mentioned you have done)

Some of us have more important things to do

So my wife had an issue that her iPhone screen would be all white. It would stay like this for hours, then restart itself and it's fine. Everything we set up an appointment at the Genius Bar, it would start working right before we would go. So yesterday it did it, and we got an appointment at the Genius Bar and got it in. The Genius looked at it and said no problem and will replaced the display. I was thinking they would just swap it out, but nope they replaced the display. They did it in about 10-25 minutes and it works perfectly.
I took a picture with my iPhone this time just in case it started working. We were also able to back it up so we were ready if they just replaced it (we would sync it to iTunes in the past when this happened to see if it would fix it).
The funny part is I took screen shots on her phone and when we got the phone back from being fixed, it showed the pics that I took like the screen was working 100%.
Either way we were very pleased at how we were treated and how it was handled.
Here is what the phone looked liked and it would stay like this for hours:

Apparently that also happened to my girlfriend, told her to reboot her phone and it hasnt happened since.. I smell a screen replacement somewhere in the near future..

This site has so many skewed opinions. First people get pissed if you swap for a refurb and there's really nothing wrong with your phone. Now people are getting pissed because Apple fixed your phone and didn't swap it.
