iPhone explodes from unlock attempt

Wow! If what he says is true, it exploded/burned while he was opening it, before any soldering took place.
What so honestly screwing with the software makes your iPhones explode? But it wont matter because it would be covered by Apple.. how are they going to tell your iPhone was unlocked if it blew up? 
Apple thinks of everything. Try to unlock their iPhone, they'll blow it up.

It was an attempt at a hardware unlock...

Actually, that'd be pretty cool-- put ink packets in your iPhone and if it gets stolen, you can email a special code to it that would make it explode! Teehee.
I tried to unlock my iPhone.
I was being careful, but as soon as I put the cover removal tool into the slot to separate the cover, I heard:
"What are you doing, Dave?" in perfect 2001: A Space Odyssey HAL voice.
Scared the BEJEEBUS out of me. I stopped trying to hack something that was already pretty damn cool....
Now, I'm fairly certain my iPhone is watching me. And I don't care WHAT you say, I ain't goin' NEAR that airlock!!

The guy likely left the phone on while attempting to take off the case. The correct procedure is to turn it off completely (red slider) while dismantling.
It may be possible to puncture the battery cell during the initial removal of the aluminum panel if you use enough force.

Soldering is not needed anymore, Touching down on the traces with two needles is enough.
He probally accedentally touched the battery with the screwdriver, so it imediatly discahrged, producing alot of heat.

Also, use only plastic case removers... not a metal screwdriver!
