Really? That's cool. I kind of wish that Apple would make an iPhone "Duo" with all glass screens, and just a very small gap between them. But, I guess everyone has their preferences
🙂
Do you mean a better version of the now-discontinued Microsoft Surface Duo folding phone and its second generation the Surface Duo 2 ("Duo 2" seems like an odd or fun name, depending), that Microsoft discontinued in 2023 or 2024? Apparently they stopped making it for a variety of reasons, including being pretty poorly executed and overpriced, and because Microsoft cut experimental products like this at the time to save some money.

The crease be damned. I think price will be the decider: for the 2500 dollar (expected price) you can buy an iPhone 17, MB Neo (or iPad Air) and have ~900 dollar to spare to buy a PS5+ a slurry of games or go on a a nice little trip. What is the expected benefit of the foldable in a practicable sense?
It'll be practical for the people who can afford it

I was in a Best Buy yesterday and played with the Fold 8. All I can say is WOW. It’s amazing. Apple fold will be identical display as Samsung makes the part for Apple. This aspect ratio is the way.

The crease I didn’t even care about UNLESS I remembered to look for it because of these forums. Didn’t bother me in the slightest.

Only thing I didn’t like is the awkward shape with one hand when folded. And the Samsung speakers seemed too weak. Ok two things.

lol what is this thread about?
You wanting to come first to complain? You did it, yay.
Thanks for your great insight. A foldable screen will have a crease. Thanks for sharing.

You obviously don’t understand how folding screens work, otherwise you would have refrained from writing something like
But there is no magic display technology that completely bypasses the physics of repeatedly bending a screen.
The crease doesn’t come to be by folding the screen…
The crease doesn’t exist because the screen was folded, it exists so the screen can be folded. Two very different things.
On older devices it literally has to exist so the screen only folds where it’s supposed to and in the direction it’s supposed to. On newer devices it’s more tightly secured and material is put behind it to flatten out the screen in an open state.

In other words you don’t pay for an iPad Pro quality screen… you pay for the SIZE of an iPad (mini)‘s screen. You pay for the privilege of having a rather normal phone in your pocket and the ability to transform it into a far bigger device if needed, not for a big screen without a crease… that’s just not what’s going on, that won’t be Apples pitch. You haven’t even seen the device and are already on the fence about the screen quality and how it feels while using, like, what?
Realistically speaking, how often to you actually swipe from left to right or vise versa anyway on an iPad? Up and down sure, a crease may still be bothersome after weeks of getting used to, but left to right??

You are literally complaining about a problem you made up, bravo.

Compromises I’m willing to make in an exorbitantly priced foldable phone? None. My visual acuity is no longer perfect but if there’s a visible crease, well… I doubt that is what will keep me from buying one, however it alone would be enough to deter me.

A device with a foldable screen will have a crease on its screen.

An “edgeless” display on a phone will still have edges - as it’s a three dimension object. Those edges may be curved rather than sheer, but a cuboid will still have 6 faces.

Marketing is marketing, it cannot supersede physics.

Equallly though, there’s no point getting flustered and outraged about a marketing claim. After all, Red Bull doesn’t really give you wings.

Apply common sense.

People keep acting like the iPhone Fold is somehow going to eliminate the crease entirely.

It won’t.

There will be a crease. Maybe it’ll be smaller than what we’ve seen on other foldables. Maybe it’ll be harder to notice in normal use. But there is no magic display technology that completely bypasses the physics of repeatedly bending a screen.

That’s why I still struggle with the idea of $2,500 device that has a visible and/or tangible crease running through the middle of the display. At that price, I expect a screen that feels uncompromisingly premium, not one with a built-in reminder that it’s folding.

The best part will come after launch. As soon as the first units arrive, MacRumors will be flooded with threads of people taking photos from every possible angle, under every lighting condition imaginable, trying to prove that the crease either exists or doesn’t.

“Can’t see it in normal use.”

“Look at it under a flashlight.”

“I can feel it.”

“Mine doesn’t have it.”

“It’s only visible at certain angles.”

We’re about to witness CreaseGate.

I think this more about the whiners than the tech. Yes, there are people that don't understand physics. But I disagree in you calling it CreaseGate. Not just that Gate is way overused, but that a gate is a real problem, not a made up one of overly picky people. CreaseWhine.

I’d be a little gentler - although, really, I do n’t disagree with “whine”.

Mostly, I think it’s a mix of unrealistic expectations and, far more importantly, a desperate milking of “content” for YouTube / forum clicks.

No one is making you buy it 🤣
You’re not the first person to comment like this, but what does it have to do with whether I buy it or not? I’m here on this forum to discuss technology. I don’t buy many other Apple products either, but it’s still fun to discuss them on a discussion forum.

Eh, when the complaint over nothing reaches a certain level, and it long ago exceeded that here, gentle is as gentle goes. Yes to the you tubers, but they are trying to make a living. Here? There will be people talking about if certain manufacturing dates are better than others, just you watch, and people who have no problem returning 11 of them in search of perfection, because they 'paid so much, they deserve it.' Whiners seems to kind.

Regardless of benefit, there are people who already own MBP's and pretty much anything else they want, so they will evaluate 'value' with a different perspective than some.

Having seen and tried the Samsung Z Fold 8, I was very impressed by the crease, or should I say apparent lack there of. Yes it can be felt, but it was almost imperceivable to view, even from different angles, and even when rotated 90 degrees. In tablet mode if you will the form factor made a lot of sense, and when closed the front screen form didn’t feel too bad.

However, I’m not convinced the slight size increase over my 17 Pro Max would be worth TWICE the money, as it’s still probably not big enough to be a useful tablet.

Perhaps this is where Apple have solved things.

Maybe Apple won’t just make it like an iPad mini, or stretched out phone display, but perhaps find a way to make this small tablet feel bigger and more usable and useful via software.

Genuinely interesting times, and as we all know gen 1 Apple products are rarely home runs, but it should lay the groundwork for a truly amazing 2nd and 3rd gen.

If they are like samsung, you won't be able to purchase the protection on it. They know the screens are extremely fragile. I have seen so many folding phones come back to the store with the inner screen damaged.
SamsungCare+ has been available for their foldables, including the Fold8. I had SamsungCare+ on my Fold6. The only foldable so far that coverage is not available for is the limited-run TriFold, but I have SquareTrade/Allstate coverage for that.

I expect AppleCare+ will be available for the iPhone Ultra. It will be really nice if it's included under AppleOne coverage that some people already have. Heck, iPhone Ultra could even drive AppleOne adoption, but we'll see if the subscription includes the device.

True. Generating outrage for free on a platform where someone does get paid does seem a bit silly.

That said, I have a strong suspicion that some of the most vocal outrage-merchants on here ARE YouTubers using other usernames, to generate interest and engagement on topics they’re making videos about, increases my their revenue.

If they’re not doing that, they’ve missed an opportunity. And some YouTube content and comments on here are coincidently almost word-perfect.

Crease or not, it does not matter. It is not a big deal. Apple has made crease potential lesser visible than other portable brands. Iphone ultra foldable is the most awaited major iPhone redesigned with most portable mini iPad feature in one device. It is the first Apple user transformative user experience allowing users experiencing mini iPad with phone capability and vice versa in one pocketable device. It is the most crucial innovative iPhone ever made that will shake foldable iPhone market and become the major segments of the market which will be similar to iPhone major share in premium phone market. Cheers 🥂🥂🥂to the incoming foldable iPhone ultra which will be the center of attention and shinning star 🌟🌟🌟at next month Apple event for iPhone announcement🥂. Consumers who value it will get it no matter what. It will be the best seller in the foldable phone market and change foldable phone market dynamic for the best. 👏👏👏

iPhone ultra Apple care might be higher than others due to the first generation product and higher risk of damage due to more complex built. We shall see!

I wonder if the "crease" will be more of an issue for those NOT buying the phone then those who purchase it? Sort of like those complaining about the iPhone Air who hated it but never bought it/tried it.

Considering how poorly the Air sold, there did seem to be some legitimate issues there, even if not for you.

I feel like Apple has started making some pretty obvious compromises in both design and the gimmick department. It sometimes feels like they’re prioritizing novelty and things that look impressive in a keynote over what actually makes the product better to use. Apple’s design philosophy used to feel very deliberate, with almost every element serving a clear purpose. Lately, I’m not always sure that’s still the case.
