I have to say if Apple actually releases a foldable iPhone, it will be the most clear sign that the company has abandoned a lot of Steve Jobs principles that got it to where it is. Foldable phones go 100% against Apple philosophy. It's the next netbook. It's a stupid gimmick that compromises design principles of durability, aesthetic and to add what? Few inches of plastic screen.
This will be the biggest sign on the wall "I'm Tim Cook, I don't know what else to create, so I've do another Newton". Apple Vision was the first product they made that while nowhere near as bad as a foldable phone, was the first device that didn't have a proper use case. And released 8 years too early. Because....investors, stock, we need to innovate? Yeah, probably. There was a lot internal resistance at Apple before the release. For a good reason. It made no sense. As a concept in the future, Apple Vision may make sense. (watch didn't have a killer app - yes, but they have pulled it off eventually, difference is tech to build a good product was there).

But foldable phone...Steve Jobs said many times "we don't ship junk". It's junk. Do you remember how nuts Steve went before original iPhone release when he scratched a prototype plastic screen? He made Corning go nuclear to retool the factory to have a glass screen before 2007. And they will ship plastic ******** for 2+ grand...?

Just genuinely sad to see company giving up on what it stood for. Slowly, gradually.

Apple is a corporation with a purpose. That purpose is to sell products and make money. I know some have an emotional attachment to the Apple brand but that’s misplaced IMO.

The questions Apple will look at are

Can they sell it for a profit? I suspect yes.

Will it sell enough quantity to offset R&D and production costs? That’s the big question.

Will it bring a negative image to the brand that could affect future sales? I don’t think so. This is why Apple waited for Samsung and others to go first. Apple learns from their mistakes.

It hasn't even been released yet so it's not possible to judge as "junk" at this point. I assume you are referring to the very concept of a folding phone, but if it's executed properly then I hardly consider the idea junk. I'd love to unfold a phone for a larger screen when I need one and then shut it when the cover screen works for me. I'm not saying everyone is going to need one but if only a fraction of folks do it will be a success. We'll see if Apple does it right.

The problem is that Apple currently only sell slab phones. They have no other innovations on the horizon for the iPhone, so they are kind of forced to jump on the foldable bandwagon, but maybe do it slightly differently to google, samsung one plus etc software wise.

Try a folding phone...

Since I have one, every time I pick up the iPhone it seems completely outdated.
Same. I plan on keeping my 13PM until Apple's foldable is in a good spot (and not at first gen pricing) and then moving over. It's the iPhone + iPad mini combo I've always desired but never felt like buying.

I have no use case for a foldable. 99% of my waking hours are spent in front of computers with large screens. If contacted to do something during that 1 percent of time I am not in front of a computer, it can wait until I get back there. A phone, foldable or otherwise, cannot accomplish what I need a computer for. So my current phone (a slab) remains effective for me as a phone when I happen to be out.

And, I just do not want a foldable. It's not anything I'm interested in.

OTOH, I can understand why people may need/want one. I have no use case to own a Pro Max. I have no use case to own the largest capacity. But I wanted it. So, if people want a foldable just because, then fine. Hopefully, whatever Apple may eventually offer fits the purpose. For myself however, I won't be buying one.

Apple has the advantage of being able to transition from iOS to iPad OS in a single device. If that is even their vision for the product, which it should be. That type of integration and transition would separate it from Android which has never gotten tablets right. The market could just become a larger part of consumer mindshare once Apple enters the game. My lack of confidence in Apple doesn’t come on the hardware side of things, it comes on the software side these days. Sadly.

Try actually using a foldable before you post rage bait. You know nothing about Steve Jobs.

"You know nothing John Snow"

Preorder for me. I want an iPhone that unfolds and doubles as an iPad. Seems like a great idea. Love the Samsung and other foldables. I do hope Apple has a solution for the crease. But in using my friends Samsung Fold 6, I realized you can’t see the fold except from an angle like as someone observing. Straight on the only thing is can slightly feel it.

I do think this is a product Apple will end up selling a lot of. But it depends on execution. AppleCare+ will be a must add to purchase for a foldable. I only wish Apple would release one this year.

"Who needs a stylus?"

While I agree that Apple is slowly abounding its soul to appeal and capture average consumers, Steve Jobs did say to Tim Cook, "don't ask, 'what would Steve do?'"
Only difference is, that Apple Pencil isn't a stylus and it certainly isn't needed. Can't say the same for most smart devices back in the days.

I don’t think I agree that it’s a gimmick, or doing anywhere soon.

Years ago, I had a Microsoft Surface Duo as a work phone and I bloody loved it! The two screen format was a huge productivity booster: taking notes while browsing the internet, a document or while on a videoconference. I was gutted when they replaced them with mid-range Samsungs.

Whatever Apple brings out will likely be high quality hardware with a great software implementation. I’m looking forward to it.

Large screen foldables have been kicking around for five or six years now, and I think they are highly likely here to stay and will only get better.

That would be perfect, that when you opened it became iPadOS.

The Galaxy Fold, when you open it, uses the Samsung tablet version, working the same as the tablets, which makes it gain many functionalities, especially at the multitasking level.

Something like that I expect from Apple, if they don't do that, the foldable device would be a failure, since precisely the advantage of these devices is to have a normal folded mobile and an "iPad mini" when you open it, with the functions of a tablet, not a phone.

Wait, aren’t you the guy that keeps predicting Apple‘s downfall every year for 30 years in a row? Because you sound exactly like all of them.
Even a company like Apple can’t ignore the changing marketplace. The 2000‘s are over, everything is mature now. The next big thing is already half a decade old.
You’d rather want to see the company who’s software you rely on fail instead of adopting a proven device type?
The principles and philosophies you’re talking about are from a very, very different time.
Welcome to the ever changing world.
Adapt or die, that’s just how it is.

All these “it goes against what Apple believes in/stands for” threads. It’s complete tosh. Apple stands for maximum profit. Nothing else.

Personally I don’t have a use for a fold phone, on the other hand I’d love a flip iPhone.

Apple vision could’ve been an amazing device if it weren’t for the App Store. If it was opened up as a real compute platform like a Mac or a meta quest it would have changed the VR industry. Instead it shipped without even having webXR enabled.
