With all these claims of the next generation iPhone coming out with iChat and a front facing camera, I have been thinking there has to be a catch. With everything that Apple does, they limit you so that you can only do what it is that that feature was intended to do. So I am thinking, I never use iChat on my mac and IM is kind of a dying fad. What I could see Apple doing, is limiting the front facing camera for only iChat/video conferencing. Not allowing it to be used as a picture taking/video recording camera. I would much rather like that kind of camera with a fixed camera button instead of having to find the button on the screen and drop your phone looking for it. So if this is the case, is the front facing camera really worth it? I'll be honest, I have been hoping for them to put a front camera on an iPhone since I got the iPhone 2G. I would love this feature, considering all the patents Apple has filed involving a camera. But...whether they restrict it or not...It would be good to have and show that they are listening to the wants of their customers who have been waiting this since the first iPhone came out.

Well I'd rather Apple put something more worthwhile in the iPhone. I've had several phones over the years with a front facing camera and I have never once used it.

Very few people will take advantage of video conferencing, far less than most think.

Just look at the increasing popularity of IM and text message, people are obviously looking for less personal contact instead of more.

All cell phones with front-facing cameras put the high-resolution photo camera on the back and a cheaper, video-only low-res camera on the front.

So you have to epxlain what you want here:

A) The ability to take crummy low-rez still photos from the front cam
or
B) To have Apple put in 2 high-quality cameras, raising the price of the phone.

I'm not clear which one you're advocating for but, frankly, I don't think either one of those sounds like a great idea.

iPhone Front Camera

I think it would be of better use to have a 3 mp camera like the one on the phone now, with auto-focus and use it to take pics\video. Video chat will be awesome for the first month. I just think that if they are gonna put a camera on the front they should make it fully functional like the one on the iPhone now. With a better camera on the back, like rumored.

I think they should f*@k the front facing camera and invest in to a 8 megapixle 720p camera on the back and also have a 4.3" screen on the front that can play 720p. hmmmm kinda like the htc evo 4g, yea just like it!!:D

they will include a face genius service that will allow you to buy personalized ringtones for USD 2.89 based on your face expressions...:D

If my wife and me have the new Iphones with front facing camera, would we be able to do video calls? I know no one knows for sure..... but just curious as I am unfamiliar with the tech. I know that Qik crap on Android has a 10-20 second delay which would make a video "call" impossible.

I probably won't use it at all after trying it out for fun, but I won't put a spin on it and act like it would be a bad thing to have one. The more the merrier.

I would use a front facing camera a lot. But I would use a built in mini projector even more.

I would use a front facing camera frequently as well. As a consumer, I like to have options...the more, the better.

I would never use a front-facing video camera. When would I possibly want to use it? The speaker probably wouldn't be good enough to use it out and about, and if I'm at home why not just use my laptop?

then that's what you should get. 8mpx on a phone is retarded. 720p on a phone is also retarded.

Thanks for letting your thoughts be known.

I, on the other hand, would welcome an improvement in the camera on the iPhone and would also like a higher resolution screen. Why are these things "retarded"?

Yes, but that is the point of having a front facing camera.

I currently use the Knocking Video app (it's free). You place the call then open the app, that way you get voice, because the knocking video app doesn't do voice right now. The frame rate is pretty good.

I can think of the hottest new app - chat roulette for iphone.
Now you too can log on and see bored teenagers and serial masturbaters whenever you want!!!

As do I, but megapixels don't make a good photo, even if there is eight of them. Furthermore a 720p display is a waste of money for the consumer. HD videos are meant to be watched from a large screen, not a peephole on your phone.

I'd like to see spec bumps as much as the next guy, but not at the point where they become ridiculously overblown. Spec fights are not really the Apple way.

That's why you plug your iPhone into your large screen with cables, works great.

Lmao, hopefully only to use if it's plugged in! I think MyWi drains my battery enough, I can't imagine how short the presentation/movie would play if it's not hooked up to some power source :)

I bet AT&T restricts it to wifi use only which will make it lame.

All the more reason to jailbreak and get 3G Unrestrictor
