My wife's iPhone 15 Pro Max running iOS 17.03 got pretty hot today while simply charging on a 20W Apple charger and 2m braided USB-C charging cable. It was about 40% charged at the time. No Apps running, but WIFI and BT on.

She got the iPhone last week...Are there processes (indexing, etc) that only occur when the iPhone is placed on a charger? Is there anything like "activity monitor" on the iPhone that I can check to see what its doing the next time it happens?

Mine gets hot too with the 20W charger, it's fast and under 50% is charging harder so it will become hotter. It will become less hot once it passes 50/60%. I use a 5W charger mostly as I don't need speed. But that's normal, my 13P became hot the same. Never seen a warning message though, that's the important thing.

My 15 pro heats up a lot when I use the camera's native app to take 3 or 4 photos. Latest iOS, everything updated. It's been happening since the first day, the correction update didn't change anything for me.

Same for me.

Same. Especially if you use portrait mode, there's a lot of computing power needed when doing the bokeh in real time. But again, it was the same on my 13P, so I'm not worried

What is worry some is, if you take snaps in direct sunlight, the side frames, screen, back become so hot that you can not hold it, brightness reduction kicks in, refresh rate is drastically reduced(pro motion to slow motion), scroll stutters badly and battery drains heavily.

I remember something similar happened with my 13P at the beach, not much the slowing but brightness and warmth. But I didn't stress test the 15PM yet under similar condition, it's cold-ish now here..

Yes, her 15PM cooled down after around 60% as well. Could be normal for 20W fast charging. Her old 12PM always used a 10W USB-A "fast" charger so it never got this hot. 20W chargers appear to be the lowest wattage (USB-C) that Apple makes these days. However, I'm a bit concerned for the effect the constant heat has on 15PM battery. After 3 years, her 12PM just alerted us to "service battery" at 79% as we were preparing it for trade-in...it figures. We'll see if the 15PM battery lasts as long.

Same.. that's why I only use the 5W one. I did the same with my 13P and after two years it's at 96% health (also almost always stopped at 80% with a smart plug)

@sstiwari @coso this must be software. I could be wrong but even if I have a little look at my photos in the album and folders it's enough to warm up. However I had 30m facetime and no warm up.

Which brand 5W do you have? Its hard to trust the aftermarket, especially chargers and cables.

Oh it's an original Apple one. Very old, I have like three or four around the house coming from the first iPhones, iPods etc.

I have several of those laying around as well. How are you able to use them with the USB-C cable on 15PM?

I just use an IKEA USB-A to USB-C cable

I also tried a small USB-A to female USB-C adapter (taken from one of my SSD drives) but it doesn’t work

Same for me. Although I noticed it heats up way more when using the new default 24 megapixel resolution. If heats up less when using 12 MP.

You are not alone, my wife has the 15 and it is warm still even after the update.
how warm is warm? All my iPhones have gotten warm in use, my iPad has gotten warm in use. Wasn’t the issue that it was getting too hot to hold as in “damn, that’s hot af, somethings wrong” or it gets too hot and shuts down.

had my 15 pro max for a week and it’s only been on 17.0.3. It’s charged on a qi charger nightly I run instagram, videos through Apple TV and Plex, use it with my drone, email, browsing, I have the always on display enabled and it’s been cooler than my 14 pro max.

WARM/HOT and she never had that with her iPhone 12

I havent been able to use my magsafe charger since 17.0.3. Overheats in an hour and stops charging. Before the update i had no issues with my belkin 3 in 1 and official apple magsafe puck.. having to use wired charging right now but it still gets very warm. My iphone 13 mini hardly gets this warm when charging it with magsafe

I also have the belkin 3 in 1 MagSafe charger (vertical) stand and no overheating here at all. Charges up fine all the time.

I can even play videos while on the MagSafe charger and there is no overheating.

But I have the 2nd batch of the iPhone 15 Pro Max (not the launch batch).

First and second batch are 99% identical anyway, there's no time to change manufacturing processes/components that fast. Months later maybe

both 15PM (since returned) and 15PP gets very hot while fast charging on either the 20W apple charger or Anker 65W. they haven't overheated but the sides get VERY hot. tested my 13PM same conditions, its gets warm, but maybe half as hot.

Not sure whether I should keep the 15PP or go back to the 15PM for teh always on screen and 5x zoom, as it doesn't seem to be significantly less cool than the 15PM.

I was charging my iPhone 15 Pro on my factory Tesla wireless charger while talking over bluetooth. Within a few minutes the phone overheated and gave me the overheat warning on the screen and disconnected the conversation. This was on IOS 17.0.2. Have to test it again with 17.0.3.
Happened all the time with my iPhone 12 Pro, the Tesla charger was heating it up until it stopped charging.
Haven’t tried with my 15, using cabel instead to avoid the Tesla toaster.
