yes i bought a used i phone and unlocked it no problem in like 5 minutes. i check mydocomo account(i can read japanese..to some degree) and it seems to be capped at 5700 on pake hodai..i am a little confused also because of the i mode thing..i have mopera standard also..the truth i guess will come when the bill comes..docomo staff in general are not cool and or uninformed about the iPhone on their network so basically it comes down to us..let’s keep this forum updated as much as possible to insure we can all get quality iPhone service on docomo network for a decent price..I’m looking at 8400 as a total monthly bill..12000 and up for unlimited internet only is nuts and im not going for that
Agree, DoCoMo folks usually tell you that a Non-DoCoMo phone cannot be used on their network. Utter BS! I hope for you that the cap applies, but it confuses me as Pake-Hodai Double is exclusively for i-mode as stated on the DoCoMo site. Check MyDoCoMo frequently and see whether additional charges will show up.

ive been checking my packet usage on mydocomo. ive only had it on my phone for 3 days but according to mydocomo it seems to be holding at a capped charge at 5700.unless there are some secret fees that will appear on my bill that are not on mydocomo. it was actually maxed out after the first day so i imagine its impossible to have a monthly plan where you pay less than the max rate.
As mentioned before, that’s strange… The question that we have to answer now is: Which flat rate should be used with the iPhone? A) Pake-Hodai Double? B) Biz-Hodai Double? C) Any of them? D) Both?
Yes, the flat rate is maxed out very quickly. That’s how DoCoMo is making money. They try to tell you that you might only pay a couple of hundred Yen if you don’t use it a lot, but typical usage is maxing out the flat rate within a few days. Hence, you always pay 5,700Yen. I was asking DoCoMo staff how much data that would be, but they couldn’t answer this question. They didn’t even know how much kilobyte a packet is… I later found out that 1 packet is 128K.

The question that we have to answer now is: Which flat rate should be used with the iPhone?
A) Pake-Hodai Double?
B) Biz-Hodai Double?
C) Any of them?
D) Both?

Check out the below site:
http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/english/service/imode/site/fullbrowser.html

"Pake-hodai double is a service starting from an affordable flat-rate monthly charge of ¥980 (¥1,029 incl. tax) with a maximum charge of ¥4,200 (¥4,410 incl. tax) for i-mode and i-mode mail use. The maximum charge when using i-mode Full Browser is ¥5,700 (¥5,985 incl. tax)."

If I understand it correctly, one can use Pake-Hodai Double and pay max. 5,700Yen excl. tax if one is using the so called 'Full Browser Mode' (in addition to i-mode) which should be exactly what you are doing with the iPhone.
Therefore, C) might be the correct answer. However, B) could save you some money as this flat rate is for Internet access excl. i-mode.

I still don't understand why sealab2021 had to pay more than 12,000Yen to get the cap. Let's wait until he replies and see whether my assumption that he is using a DoCoMo phone (with i-mode) and an iPhone with the same SIM-card is correct. However, this still wouldn't explain why he is maxing out both flat rates...

This is a great Thread! I just bought a Iphone 3GS for my friend in Japan. She has a Google phone from Docomo and does not like it! She can just place the Google Phone Sim card into Unlocked & Jailbroken Iphone and it should work just fine.

I also have a Google phone (HTC Magic aka HT-03A) and also don't like it. The battery is weak and the phone is very slow...
Is the iPhone that you bought already unlocked or do you still have to do that?

She can just place the Google Phone Sim card into Unlocked & Jailbroken iPhone and it should work just fine.
Well, read the thread again. It's not as easy as one might think. She can basically insert the DoCoMo SIM card into the iPhone and use it for phone calls, but she has to be careful about Internet access. I assume that your friend signed up for Biz-Hodai Double plan and Mopera U when she bought the Google phone. If not, I would recommend doing so before using the iPhone on the DoCoMo network. Make sure that she is setting up the iPhone correctly (APN settings) or simply do the setup for her before shipping the phone to Japan. See my previous posts for details.

Yah I need to set up the APN Settings from this thread!

Quick Question? How do you change the APN Settings? I see VPN settings! Is that the same thing?

That really didn't help. I don't see Cellular Network!
Do you use an unlocked iPhone in Japan with a DoCoMo SIM card?
If not, you can't see a DoCoMo cellular network.

The APN settings are (supposedly) needed to set up the phone for Internet access using the DoCoMo cellular network in Japan. One prerequisite is that you have an unlocked iPhone and of course reside in Japan.

well i was checking out forums for the ability to see the Cellular Data Network Line in Network and it seems like you need 3.0 to do it.

Ron, sounds like you have the issue solved. All we need are some specifics though.

What Docomo phone did you get to start with, should we go and get a basic phone with your specific plan?

What sim card do you have, Foma, or regular Docomo?

What phone plan do you have, what's it called, unlimited internet you already mentiond but what else does it include?

How did you sign up for Mopera, online or in the store with the clerk?

On your iPhone, what is the APN settings, did you use a user name and password in the iPhone setting also?

Did you have to put your Docomo sim in the iPhone and visit "start.Mopera.net" to get things going?

You mentioned you got your iPhone working but never provided the specifics. If you can help us by stating what you did and or signed up for at Docomo that would be helpful.

The reason I ask is, I am really thinking of dropping my Blackberry plan with them and just getting a regular phone and unlimited internet plan, but what plan or plans and which phone or sim cards are the questions. And once I do that, I'm going to pop the sim in my iPhone and use that instead.

@Andy, (small update)

Well I have not signed up for Mopera just yet. I did however (without WiFi on) put my Foma sim into the iPhone, set the APN to the 0120.xxxxx you recommended, opened the browser and then went to "start.mopera.net", and what do you know, it actually brings me there. Now there is an area you enter your 4 digit PIN, I entered what was on my original copy of my contract, however this didn't work.
Now, there are two possible reasons for this; one is the fact that I have to sign up for Mopera U and establish a 4 digit PIN? Or maybe it's the original PIN I set up when signing up for Docomo, but do I have to sign up for Mopera U?
Or the second reason is, I simply forgot my "new" PIN, as I vaguely remember a time when I may have changed it due to my wife, she lost her phone, we went to the Docomo store to file a claim for insurance she had on it, and at this point I may have changed my PIN because I didn't remember it.

Two things I need to do, one is visit the store and change my PIN, and also sign up for Mopera U.

Bottom line is this though, if what Ron is saying is good to go, I quite honestly would rather run that direction as it is cheaper at this point than what I am paying now. And seems to be a fresh start too. All we need now is for Ron to spill the beans and give us the inside scoop as to what he did. Details are important as this process is completely vague, even more so for us non-Japanese reading or speaking individuals. I tried to go through the Mopera site to start up, and I couldn't understand a damn thing. (I know you're thinking, why not ask my wife, she reads Japanese? Well she isn't Japanese, and she gets very easly frustrated trying to explain this stuff to me. She can read the basics, but the technical stuff is hard for her to translate. So I am at a stand still right now.
Heck I even tried to run through the "mydocomo", and that was useless too, even with google translation.

Ron, sounds like you have the issue solved. All we need are some specifics though.

I am not sure if Ron is on the right track. I am still convinced that Biz-Hodai Double and Mopera U are the way to go with an iPhone.

Yes, I think that you have to sign up for Mopera U.
See below link:
http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/english/charge/discount/biz_hodai_w/index.html

"A subscription to mopera U (U Standard Plan: ¥500 [¥525 incl. tax]/month) , BlackBerry Internet Service (¥1,500 [¥1,575 incl. tax]/month) or other Biz-hodai compatible provider is required."

Two things I need to do, one is visit the store and change my PIN, and also sign up for Mopera U.

Correct. Sign up for Mopera U and change the APN settings to mpr2.bizho.net so that you can use the Biz-Hodai Double flat rate.

Bottom line is this though, if what Ron is saying is good to go, I quite honestly would rather run that direction as it is cheaper at this point than what I am paying now. Not sure.. As mentioned before, I am still convinced that Biz-Hodai Double with Mopera U and the correct APN settings are the way to go. Please also note that logging onto start.mopera.net might not be necessary. That was just a guess. But if you anyway change the PIN, just do so.

Heck I even tried to run through the "mydocomo", and that was useless too, even with google translation.

Don't give up half-way. Hang in! You don't have to navigate through MyDoCoMo a lot. I'll try to post a screenshot later to explain some basics.

The problem is nearly solved!

well i was checking out forums for the ability to see the Cellular Data Network Line in Network and it seems like you need 3.0 to do it.

Nevermind? I went to the T-mobile Store to get one of their sim cards. It now has the Cellular Data Network Line. So I can change the APN now!

How to use MyDoCoMo?

I'll try to post a screenshot later to explain some basics.

Here is a brief description how to check your bill at MyDoCoMo:

Andy,

You win the mac man of the year award. I am posting this message using my iPhone that is currently on the ntt docomo cell network.
I will switch over now to A pc to post what I have to share as it is simply easier for me to type all that I have to share with everyone. Lol

stay tuned.

Getting your UNLOCKED 3Gs iPhone up and running on the NTT Docomo network!

Okay fellow Docomo users, here is what it will take to get the iPhone up and running. Specifics and all, unlike the other vague instructions on the net.

Now, keep in mind, my situation is slighly different, and with that being said, you may have to change or do a few things differently then I do. I will try my best to point those differences out as I go, so bare with me.

So, first things first. My phone specifics;

I have a "USA" version 32gb 3Gs phone (in white).

It has been unlocked for region free use with Cydia with Winterboard for the extra goodies, shouldn't matter what you use to unlock it, just get yours unlocked in order to set specific settings.

Now for the plan of attack.

I will state this first, I got EXTREMELY lucky and scored a perfect English speaking Docomo rep. However the info I provide here should get you going in the right direction.

I went down to an actual Docomo shop, walked in and asked for an English speaking rep, I was told there were none, so I stated (in English anyway) I needed to sign up with Mopera U. I was given a number, walked over to a desk and began speaking in English to the male rep, he then tried to call the hotline and failed, then proceeded to the back room where a lady came out (probably a manager) and she sat down and with perfect English asked me what I could be helped with. I stated, I needed to sign up for Mopera U standard, the one for Y525 per month, she gathered my info, and helped me right away with no questions asked.
She did state though that I had a Blackberry service and I didn't need Mopera U as I already have the interent service which includes all that I need.
She told me that she could sign me up if I had other smart phones, and I hesitated for a moment but said I did, and that I have an iPhone.
She paused, looked at me and stated that because she heard that, she can not promise service to work, and that I should be careful to check my bills because the plan I had may not cap out. I agreed, stated I didn't expect her to promise anything as this was certainly a trail run to see if this works or not. She was very cool and said, okay, no problem, and set me up.

In addition she helped me out with the mydocomo.com too and provided me with my ID and password for that as well. And she verified my 4 digit PIN, something that I thought i'd changed but actually didn't. (past reading will indicate why I thoguht this, but the PIN plays a big part in this so read these prior posts carefully).

So with all that being siad, here is what I did on the actual iPhone.

First try: I got back to my office (I work in Yokosuka), and I put my Foma sim into my iPhone and went directly to the APN settings. I changed them to the mpr2.bizho.net with NO user name and NO password. Tried to use the internet, and NO GO.

Second try: I then changed the APN to 0120.mopera.ne.jp with again NO user or password. I then went to start.moper.net and instantly was brought to the login there. I entered my 4 digit PIN (FYI, you can only enter a 4 digit numerical PIN here so make sure you know this), and instantly I was broguht to another page containg settings information. All in Japanese of course but pretty easy to navigate through. I instantly also saw that there was what I assume to be a default user name and password. I wrote them down on paper, backed out of this page and tried the internet again with no APN changes, still NO GO.

Third try: I then set the APN back to mpr2.bizho.net and tried the internet, still NO GO, I tried entering in the user name and password leaving the current APN the same, and still no go.

Fourth try: So with these attempts, I was a tad confused, I remembered seeing on the login screen with the user name and password, a mention of something of APN being Mopera.net, so I went into settings, changed the APN to exactly that mopera.net, left the user name and password there and then tried the internet... BINGO! It worked!

So, with all this being laid out, this is what I think all should try. Get the Biz Hodai package or Biz Hodai double package, sign up for Moper U standard. Follw the instruction for logging in with the 4 digit PIN, write down the user name and password, set the APN to simply mopera.net, enter in the user name and password and you should be good to go.

At this point I have not created a email for Mopera, in the settings there appeared to be a default one for me. And on that settings page when you log in, you'll notice to the right of that email addy and user name and password for APN, there is what I assume to be a button that would allow you to change those items to something personal. I didn't bother as of yet.

Now my next step is to create a Gmail account and use that instead. If anyone has the setting for that, this would be a great help to me so please share.

I DO NOT know the impact on my bill yet, stay tuned for that.

I also have not tried SMS or MMS yet.

As of right now, my calls work, my internet works so I will keep everyone posted on the SMS or MMS and email status and billing status as I get more time to mess around with it.

And for those wondering, as of now, I DO NOT know if the docomo email will work, I have not tested it, and I do not even know how to set those setting for docomo email either.

I certainly hope all this helps.

The break down:

1.) USA version 32gb 3Gs iPhone unlocked with Cydia

2.) APN is moper.net
user name & password = default what is given to you after confirming login using APN 0120.mopera.ne.jp and visiting start.mopera.net and entering in your 4 digit PIN

3.) My Docomo plan is a Biz Hodai (wether double or not I forgot to confirm at the shop however I strongly believe it's the Double Biz Hodai) which this package should not have a cap on usage at all from my understanding.

Good luck to all those trying to do the same, it's been a long and frustrating journey, and I thank all that have provided the help. AndyJ and Sealab are owed the most.

JUST CONFIRMED: Google maps, weather updates work fine. So does YouTube!!

You got really lucky. I couldn’t even sit down and talk to a rep (in English or Japanese) as they told me several times that an iPhone cannot be used on the DoCoMo network.
I went down to an actual Docomo shop, walked in and asked for an English speaking rep, I was told there were none, so I stated (in English anyway) I needed to sign up with Mopera U. Right, I forgot that you already had the Blackberry service. My mistake…

She told me that she could sign me up if I had other smart phones, and I hesitated for a moment but said I did, and that I have an iPhone.

O.K., this seems O.K. as I assumed that you first have to access start.mopera.net through the APN 0120.mopera.ne.jp

Second try: I then changed the APN to 0120.mopera.ne.jp with again NO user or password. I then went to start.mopera.net and instantly was brought to the login there. Strange. I thought that you had a Biz-Hodai Double plan and wonder why this doesn’t work. So, my assumption (that you can use the Biz Hodai APN) was obviously not correct.

Fourth try: So with these attempts, I was a tad confused, I remembered seeing on the login screen with the user name and password, a mention of something of APN being Mopera.net, so I went into settings, changed the APN to exactly that mopera.net, left the user name and password there and then tried the internet... BINGO! It worked!

Wait. I accessed the start.mopera.net site with my phone (HT-03A) to doublecheck what you explained above. BTW, I had to switch off WiFi to logon on mopera.net and used 0120.mopera.ne.jp as APN. I saw what you are referring to.
The following APNs have to be used to access the start.mopera.net site depending the handset:
mopera.ne.jp or 0120.mopera.ne.jp NON-HSDPA phones.
mopera.net or 0120.mopera.net for HSDPA-compatible phones.
(HSDPA = High Speed Downlink Packet Access)

I am confused now. Why does my HT-03A work on mpr2.bizho.net without any username and password and why doesn’t your iPhone work the same?

I also created a new APN setting according to your instructions:
Mopera.net
Username: <My Mopera Username>
PW: <My Mopera Password>

BTW, you can change username and password on the start.mopera.net site and probably also on the Mopera PC site.

It also works on my phone using the DoCoMo cell network (I switched off WiFi). However, I am not sure if it would fall under Biz Hodai Double.

FYI, my APN settings for mpr2.bizho.net do not contain username or password, but two values are set. See below:

MCC: 440
MNC: 10

MCC = Mobile Country code
MNC = Mobile Network Code
See below links:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mobile_country_codes
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Network_Code

Can you set MNC and MCC in your APN settings? If yes, try out mpr2.bizho.net with these two settings.

Moreover, on the mopera.net site the following DNS addresses are stated:

Primary DNS: 220.159.212.200
Secondary DNS: 220.159.212.201

Can you define DNS settings on your iPhone? If yes, enter the above IP addresses.

So, with all this being laid out, this is what I think all should try. Get the Biz Hodai package or Biz Hodai double package, sign up for Mopera U standard. Follow the instruction for logging in with the 4 digit PIN, write down the user name and password, set the APN to simply mopera.net, enter in the user name and password and you should be good to go.

Let’s wait a couple of days as you have to check your bill. I am afraid that the data traffic doesn’t fall under Biz Hodai Double if you use the APN you stated above.

At this point I have not created an email for Mopera, in the settings there appeared to be a default one for me. And on that settings page when you log in, you'll notice to the right of that email addy and user name and password for APN, there is what I assume to be a button that would allow you to change those items to something personal. Last summer, I went ahead and made the jump to SoftBank and the iPhone after being a DoCoMo user for 15 years.

It's nice to see folks cracking the DoCoMo code. Glad to see it. Just wish that it was sooner.

BTW, I've heard that DoCoMo has lost significant number of iPhone users to SoftBank. That may be some of the motivation why they are more willing to work with you. When I tried, I ran up against brick wall after brick wall.

Ron,
could you please let us know the settings that you are currently using? e.g. APN settings with all details or any other settings that you changed to get the iPhone running under Biz-Hodai double. This would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

I was in your exact situation 5 months ago. I'm now using an iPhone 3G 16gb with Docomo's network. Here's a screen shot of my iPhone settings to prove it.

I purchased my iPhone from eBay (not cheap) along with a Gevey SIM proxy card. Using my Foma SIM card everything works on my iPhone except GPS (not sure if this feature even works on legit Softbank's iPhones). Docomo mail does not work either because you need iMode to access Docomo mail; I use gmail instead. Everything else works like a charm: 3G, Maps, receive calls, call outs, SMS.

So...yes you CAN use the iPhone with Docomo and keep your family talk plan.

Edited: Changed up my theme a little.
Wow, nice icons! Where'd you find those?

Andy,
I agree with your questions specifics are needed, not just a "It works" answer. I see, per Ron he is using "capped at 5700 on pake hodai double".
I have, and others seem to be using Biz Hodai Double. My wife looked at our statement and it is certainly Biz Hodai Double. Now, I was able to log into the MyDoCoMo and look at my bill but to be perfectly honest, it is hard to understand it, even for my wife as it's hard to see if both our data plans are on the same bill or not. I see that I have more data usage, but there doesn't seem to be more charge. I only used it for a few days too just to be safe.
So at this point, I really don't know what kind of extra charges there might be.

I was however able to get my Gmail pushed to the phone and my email (Cox.net) pushed to the phone too.

Any idea if there are any IMAP or SMTP, POP/POP3 settings for the Docomo email addresses? These settings must exist in my opionion.

Yes, we need the setting details from all users who are using the iPhone on the DoCoMo network with any Hodai plan in order to fully understand how to set up the iPhone for the DoCoMo network and for which plan to sign up. I provided all setting details of my phone to solve the puzzle and would appreciate if other users would also do so.

DoCoMo would have many happy & paying iPhone users on their network if they were disclosing more information about the requirements to qualify for Biz-Hodai Double or Pake-Hodai Double and how to set up a Non-DoCoMo phone for their service. The time of locking in customers with network-locked phones will be hopefully soon over. I truly hope that the quasi-monopoly of the Japanese cell network providers will be broken as customers would definitely benefit from a more open system.

I agree that the online bill (on MyDoCoMo) isn't easy to read. I just recommended to watch the bill so that you don't end up with a huge bill at the end of the month. Just use your iPhone as usual including web access and e-mail and check whether the 5,700Yen cap applies.

I guess you mean DoCoMo's i-mode mail, right. I actually do not know the IMAP or POP server settings and security settings that you would need. I assume that DoCoMo will do everything to prevent users to access i-mode e-mail from any other device than a DoCoMo i-mode phone. Kind of makes sense to keep the spammers out.

It's funny, everyone wnats the answers, but nobody shares the info when they get it. LOL

As for Docomo, I agree with your statements 100%. Paying customers are paying customers. Money is money who cares what phone you're using? Do these Japanese cell networks not understand the meaning of GLOBAL PHONES? People travel all around the world on business and what not and stay for many months or even a year or so, do they really expect people to buy new services and phones with that in mind? The days of locking people in are over!
I mean seriously, when will they wake up here?
Docomo should have grabbed the iPhone market when it had the chance, they'd be on top of the market with their great network. Softbanks network just sucks, it's that simple.

I just wish there was some way to tell if my iPhone was using a PC tethering or not.

Used Softbank Iphone 3GS works on Docomo network

Just wanted to share my experience so far. I always wanted to do this but felt that I did not have enough information. I didn't know about the start.mopera.net page to start. After reading this thread I worked up the courage to buy used Softbank Iphone from Manga Souko. Then I went home and unlocked and jailbroke it using blackrain and set it up using the directions below.

Create 2 new APN settings:
a) 0120.mopera.ne.jp
b) mpr2.bizho.net
Activate 0120.mopera.ne.jp and go to start.mopera.net
Use PIN code to logon and change settings if needed.
Activate mpr2.bizho.net

I already had Mopera U and BizHodai since I was using the NTT Docomo HT-01A (HTC Touch Pro.) The only difference was that my APN for BizHodai was mpr.bizho.net. I will check my usage and post back later what happens. Thank you all for your work on this!

Thanks, kavik379. Any additional info from iPhone or DoCoMo smartphone users will be useful to solve the puzzle and decipher the 'DoCoMo code'.

mpr.bizho.net might work as well if you used it with your HT-01A. FYI, I just created the same APN (mpr.bizho.net) on my phone (HT-03A) and it worked as well although the standard APN is mpr2.bizho.net. However, after using mpr.bizho.net, I couldn't use mpr2.bizho.net anymore as the 3G icon didn't show up anymore if I activated mpr2.bizho.net. Strange... I had to select 'Reset to default' under APN settings to get it working again. I also created mpr3.bizho.net, but this didn't work at all and the 3G icon didn't show up.

Bottom line: Docomo seems to have (at least) two APNs for high speed data traffic:
1) mpr.bizho.net
2) mpr2.bizho.net

VIP KING also found out that mopera.net works if one enters the Mopera username and password.

P.S.: Crazy idea: What do you guys think will happen if 5 or more DoCoMo customers with iPhones went to a big DoCoMo shop and asked how get the iPhone working under their network? Will they send us away or try to help us?
