I was going to say something against this, but I found out a few secs ago, how useful this would seem.

how? it wouldnt be useful from a accidental getting tripped up the cord you know. the iphone doesnt have enough mass really for a magsafe to be effective

I don't think it would work as well as you think, simply because the phone doesn't weigh as much as a laptop computer does. Unless they made the magnet much weaker for the iPhone version, the phone would still get knocked onto the floor before the magnet would come out.

lol maybe i should continue to read before i post it seems

So you're saying that technology must not move forward? Yes, the accessories would need to be updated, but that shouldn't hold back technology.

I doubt Apple is going to use the standard 30-pin dock connector forever.

You were asking the question if we think it's cool? I don't.

I know the connector will eventually be changed but as long as it is for a good reason that is essential to the progression of the product I won't mind.

If they change it for a pointless reason that offers no technical improvement other than "it's cool" I will be totally pissed off. I understand why they use mag-safe connectors on the lap tops to prevent accidental damage but don't see any advantage in using them on the iPod / iPhone line.

You're hilarious.

I already thought it would be cool before posting, but I wanted to see if others thought it was cool too.

LOL, dude- you live for this forum.

I envision you sitting home all day and night just staring at your Apple products, trying to think of things you can do to them so you can come to MacRumors and get a good thread going.

Yeah, cause that's what I do.

Ah, we get to the root OCD cause. :p

It could prevent something like this from happening.

So would a bit of common sense.

Please use timg tags on that beast of an image.

Oh! That's how you do it! My bad. I didn't know about that code. I'll have to remember that one.

At first I came into this thread planning to post that this wouldn't make any sense since the iPhone doesn't weigh enough, but upon reading some of the other posts it does sound kind of cool.

Really though, if they're going to change the connector, I kind of wish they'd just go with a standard mini-USB so I have fewer cable variations floating around. So maybe a mini-USB style port on the iPhone that will accept a normal cord and Apple's iPhone-only, Magsafe version. That would probably be my dream cord. :p

I can't believe you are honestly claiming that 3 1/2+ years is new in the technology industry.

Intel processors are new in terms of apple laptops but we wouldn't call the core duo new.

We wouldn't call the original iPhone new and that was released 1 and 1/2 years after the magsafe. Apple clearly had the technology available to them when designing the iPhone and decided against it. Personally I can't see any real benefit this would give the iPhone but that is because I only put it in the dock every one or two days. Different usage patterns. I will say though that the magsafe adapter isn't the most reliable and often times I will have to jiggle it around or take it off and reconnect it before my computer recognises it.

Dang, you must have a good battery or minimal use. I have 0% chance of lasting out-and-about the next day with light-mild use if I don't charge every night before.

My personal habit though is to have my iPhone in the dock every chance it can be in there in case I'm unplugged for an extended time. Which is a point in itself too: If my iPhone is snugly in the dock when plugged in anyway, I guess it really doesn't need a MagSafe plug on the device itself.
