WHAT'S ALL THIS NOW THEN?!? Why, it's my nearly year old RAZR V3 with a Cingular SIM that ALSO says 3G! Does that mean it has a 3G RADIO in it?

Jesus H. Christ people. Get over the fact that it doesn't have 3G. 3G isn't as widely spread as in Europe. That's why it wasn't used! And don't even say it could have been like a BlackJack. Cuz if it was, then you'd moaning about the battery life of crude (compared to Europe's) 3G phones!

i'm not discounting the possibility, but considering almost all the reviews to date go something like this: it's a great phone, lives up to the hype, but the network sucks.

AT&T just flipped the switch on the ramped up EDGE Thursday night. Pogue's and other's reviews were done prior to that switch.

#2 wtf? no. That is the dumbest thing i've ever heard. I get 3-4 days of battery life on my smartphone with Ev-Do. (which is a 3g network)

Good job trying to justify Apple's lack of 3g.

We get about an hour on our 3g EVDO.

One way to find out is to ask the guys at iFixit who are taking theirs apart.

The biggest argument against 3G is reporting it to the FCC. If that is part of the confidential filing, then a simple firmware update would enable it. But then you have to consider that coverage area of at&t's 3G is no where near the reach of their EDGE network. On top of that, at&t just announced a buyout of Cellular One which uses the same EDGE technology.

Odds are really long, but it would be Christmas in July if it did happen.

But it won't.

I think.

But it'd be nice.

This San Diego paper (Qualcomm's HQ is located in SD) says the iPhone doesn't use the Qualcomm chipset:

iPhone launches amid Qualcomm chip ban

"The iPhone – a combination music player, cell phone and Web device with a sleek touch-screen design – is a high-end phone that does not contain Qualcomm chips. It would seem to compete with phones using Qualcomm chips that make it possible to surf the Internet at high speeds, download music and play 3D games."

Is Qualcomm the only company that makes 3G chips?

Also just an FYI - the Union Tribune is one of the worst papers in CA (I live in SD and they couldn't pay me to read it)

Jobs said in an interview that current 3G technology took too much power from the battery, but that hopefully this would be corrected in the future. Take that for what it's worth...

3G chipset doesn't mean 3g capable

A 3g chipset doesn't necessarily mean a phone is 3g capable. The radio has to support the 3g bandwidth and that's what has to be tested by the manufacturer and disclosed to the FCC.

We would know by know if the phone supported.

Also from Apple.com, the phone is "GSM - Quad-band (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)" nowhere does it mention UMTS/HSDPA, and they are required to in the device's manual.

Not just for all the technical reasons posted above.... but also for one big other reason: ATT does NOT even have a 3G network!

They don't? Wow, I guess I'm posting telepathically then since I thought I was connected to AT&T's 3G network right now. Oh wait, I am.

In case you missed the sarcasm, It's available in most cities now and has been for a while.

Since Apple is pretty secretive about plans, could hkb be referring to the undisclosed iPhone for the Euoropean Market?

i hope hkb will be back to discuss further since it seems, on the face of it, that iphone does not have that which he said it would have inside.

I know. I believed it all too. Sounded convincing and I 'wanted' to believe.
Oh well. :(

This is an interesting discussion...lets bump it.

I happen to think that the idea isnt too far off from reality. Don't forget, Apple cannot make 700,000 users very unhappy in a very short time.
