iPhone OS 4.0 Supports Multitasking

For iPad owners, 4.0 is free.
Hah, they implemented the double high return to app thing! I had believed before today that they would do such a thing. I think I posted about it on here somewhere? Meh. Makes lack of multitasking audio recorder on the iPad doable now with 3rd party apps.

Now we just need some sort of Flash support (or a decent alternative) and a native widescreen.

4.0 will be out for iPhone and iPod Touch this summer. iPad will not be until the fall, probably 4.1 (just like iPad is now 3.2.x versus iPhone 3.1.x).
4.1 might be unified for all platforms, or they might do an even/odd thing.
I hope that this is just an oversight, but did anybody else notice the following on Apple's new page about iPhone OS 4:

Notice that the iPad is missing from the multitasking list. Hopefully they are just making a comment that just applies to the iPhone, but it does worry me a bit. Although I can't imagine them not implementing multitasking on the iPad.

I got a bit excited when I saw them talking about "folders". At first I thought they were file folders and said "Cool!" until I realized that they were just app folders.
It's not a real multitasking. It's a scheme where OS services may provide some resemblance of multitasking. It does bring real benefits but it's a far cry from the real multitasking available in Android. For example, you will not be able to run instant messenger simultaneously with Safari.
Until someone messages you, a popup box with their message appears, and it gives you the option to respond. With fast app switching, it should load right up where you left off.
I knew there would be people complaining about it not being "real multitasking" when actually it IS real multitasking, they just stripped out the parts that are usually running but don't actually need to be running to do any of the things you need to do to get your work done. People always complain about Android devices running out of memory, etc, with all the apps open and keeping track of them and closing different ones to keep under the limit is just a pain to deal with. I've discussed Apple's decision as a possibility in other threads before. The way I understand it is that its kind of like services or something in OS X. Basically Apple can have a few apps running that handle the tasks of many apps, and then relay that data to the user with various mechanisms. Why have all that Navigon map data loaded into memory if you're not looking at it? You just want to hear the lady tell you where to drive if you're doing something else. Why waste the extra RAM?
If I understand this correctly, then they are in fact writing the app states to flash memory for the fast app switching. Couldn't this also be implemented in Safari for the tabs that are always closing on iPad?
I also like how Steve left open the ability to run widget apps on the iPad at the end Q&A session. We may see the dashboard yet. I can also see multitasking working more like spaces or the tabs for Safari, where they fly out into a grid instead of popping up from below.
Also--how in the heck do you not close apps for multitasking? I don't get it. What if I don't want there to be 200 apps in my multitasking dock that I have to flip through? Am I missing something here? Somebody please explain.
Sucks that we have to wait for the fall on iPad, but that should allow them time to add lots of tasty new features, like the widgets!
apparently its not even "real" multitasking. meaning the app is running still but cant do anything.
