I was processing my photos from my trip last week, and I was surprised by the quality of the photos that I took with iPhone.

Compared to Nikon 1 J3 photos, iPhone 6 produced less noisy and better looking photos. Especially in low light, it destroyed J3.

Of course, it fell short of the quality of photos from Nikon D700 with $1700 lens and has the over-processed look at times, iPhone earned my trust. No wonder compact camera is disappearing quickly.

Yeah... I'm not surprised, Those Nikon cameras have the worst sensors Nikon has ever put in camera... with the exception of the really really cheap compacts.

Or, any camera they made before the D300 would be closer to the truth. From my experience of using a V1 quite extensively and comparing it to a range of DSLRs its sensor is about as good as any of the CCD era Nikon APS-C cameras.

Considering those cost a lot of money at the time (D2x, for example) and were used by myriad pros to create groundbreaking work I think I can cope with the substandard performance I get from my cheap Nikon 1 pocket camera.

Just in case I was going mad I checked DXO mark. They seem to agree, though low-light performance is somewhat worse (not much worse than the D2x). For me this hasn't been a problem (I don't shoot moving subjects in the dark, and the lenses mostly have VR).

Gotta be in it to win it
I usually rebut by saying I'm in the streets ALL DAY walking, while theirs sits on a tripod, lazy as can be.

My new tool is my bulky dslr with a pancake lens. I've found that while the best camera is the one you have with you, the best camera is also the one that can get the shot you want.

And while I prefer not to post-process raw images make life easy for those who want to post process.
