Prices are ridculous. I was interested in the new x but after realising the xs max is the same size as my 8 plus but all screen I really wanted that. But £1100, absolutely no chance. I dread to think where prices are going to be in a few year the way they keep rising and also got to factor in that nonsense brexit.

4 years ago the flagship iPhone 6 Plus cost £700. 4 years on the flagship plus is £1100. Obscene. And this Xr is just a mish mash of a 8 plus and an x.

true the contract prices have rising up so much in the last five years imagine 5g launched IN 2022 or before we will be seeing sub £150 - £160.

I’m interested to see what the contract prices will be when they are released today/tomorrow. £100 a month for a phone, it’s just sheer greed from Apple.

Unless you have 1 niche app that is vital for your business, tell me something it does that a 50 dollar android can't do.. web, mail, pics, gaming, all covered....

I don’t believe I said I ‘had’ to buy an iPhone in order to do my work but it’s a tool I use all the time at and for work and part of my social/private life .... a $50 Android may well perform some or all of the functions but the user experience for me would be crap (aside of the fact I don’t do android).

No real difference to me choosing one car over another because it performs better in the environment where I live, it’s more comfortable to drive and reliable but it’s more expensive...... some would be happy with the additional cost others wouldn’t, each person justifies what they spend in their own circumstances ...... if you can’t that’s fine .... I can and I’m very happy spend the money on something I enjoy using. I don’t gamble, I don’t play golf, I don’t go binge drinking but I do enjoy gadgets and I’m happy to spend my hard earned on them :)

You could use the same argument with almost anything. By extension you're suggesting we all buy cheap cars, cheap houses, the cheapest beer. Many people are willing to pay for what they perceive as a higher quality item. My son just spent over £3,000 on a watch. I think he's mad, but he's well excited.

To me, the price is irrelevant. I'll be buying a 256GB iPhone XR in blue no matter what.
Life is way too short. If you can afford it buy it and enjoy the whole experience. I know of too many elderly people who had thousands in the bank and lived in old decrepit houses before they died. Maybe they enjoyed their unnecessarily frugal lives, but I am sure a little extra comfort would have improved the life they had.

That's true - I know of many people with thousands in the bank but they wear the cheapest clothes, drive old bangers of cars and are really frugal with their money.

Life is for the moment and I see nothing wrong with buying an Apple phone for over £1000. Especially when you can anticipate the enjoyment and utility you'll get out of it.

I own a £4000 watch and have people tell me that you can buy a watch for £10. They simply don't get it.

Look not saying Apple doesn’t have high margins or maybe isn’t increasing them a bit but there’s a lot of other factors in play.

Brexit - Caused our £ to tank so everything has generally become more expensive. I suspect it’ll tank some more next year if we don’t get a sensible deal.

Component Prices - Take RAM which Apple have bumped to 4GB from 3GB. RAM’s doubled in price roughly since a couple of years ago

Latest Component Cost - TSMC have the only live 7nm factory on the planet. Each time they lower the nm the cost of those factories goes up. They’ll want to recoup that cost so the SoC this year must be costing Apple more than it did last year.

Ultimately if you want the best, you have to pay for the best. At least Apple has cheaper models to cover most bases. It’s no different than other markets. You want a supercar with the latest tech mankind can muster, you’ll pay through the nose for it. You want to just get from A to B in some comfort, there’s plenty of affordable options.

I like how Apple have increased the screen size with the XR to 6.1 inches and it's their cheapest new option; that, plus the fact it still has the A12 inside it.

Owning an X, I don't really want the XS or Max, but don't regard them as overly expensive for what you get. These are the most premium phones available with, arguably, the Note 9 which is a similar price.

To my surprise the Max 64GB isn’t as expensive on a plan as I anticipated.

Vodafone offer 26GB data for £60/month with £79 upfront. The Xs is marginally cheaper at £54/month with £69 upfront. The S9+ and Note 9 have similar pricing.

Depending on where you work or if you are signed up to promotional websites you can even get 25% off Vodafone plans.

The prices have got obscene this last couple of years and to be honest I think the UK consumer has largely shunned the more expensive smartphones. The iPhone X was reportedly the eighth best selling iPhone over the past year with the iPhone 7 selling better than any other model. This suggests people are reacting to higher prices and seeing value in older models that essentially do the same thing.

This year when I viewed my upgrade options I saw I could get the XS for £45p/m but soon realised that’s on a 36 month contract! The homepage on O2 and EE are now advertising three year contracts in order to keep prices down and tempt people back into buying the latest models. Apple have hiked prices, pre brexit hasn’t helped and in turn I think this has changed buying trends for devices that change very little year on year. I was holding out for the XR but having seen it at launch I’ve realised it makes more sense buying the 8. If you can afford these new status symbols then great, go for it and enjoy, but I think it’s got rather out of hand and it’s killing the buzz for new releases. It’ll reach a climax though at some point and this year I think Apple will see their cheaper phones will be more popular with the mainstream.

I'm not sure I understand your point. I could argue the UK consumer has 'shunned' more expensive cars. Mercedes, BMW and Audi are doomed - prices are obscene when you can buy a perfectly good car for less than a quarter of their prices. Those who aspire to those brands and can afford them buy, those who don't and can't buy something cheaper. That's how it works. Apple is not a charity - it can price its phones any way it wishes.

I'm amazed at the whinging I've seen on forums about Apple's pricing for iPhones. The Xs is the same price as last year's X, for goodness sake - and they are selling phones all the way down to £449 for the iPhone 7.

lmao, this is absolutely obscene, how can anyone justify spending this much a on a phone??

In India, the base prices are as below:

Xr for USD 1068

Xs for USD 1386

Xs Max for USD 1526

Xs Max 512 GB for USD 2011

X is still available, starting at only USD 1276.

iPhone 7 starts at USD 555.

You’re right the likes of BMW, Mercedes and Audi are suffering but that’s more to do with the higher tax bands for new cars. A fall in sales of nearly 35% has them very worried and frantically developing efficient petrol equivalents. I wasn’t saying Apple is a charity, I was pointing out that their latest flagships are no longer the most sort after models now they have increased prices and offer cheaper alternatives. The iPhone X struggled here and we can only assume that’s because of price so I don’t see it changing again this year.

Yeah the Note 9 price seems to have happened and no one is mentioning that

I ended up paying just over £1k for the Max/256 with a staff discount. Expensive but I’ll own the device for 3 years and will be my daily shooter. So I think it’ll all work out

Samsung are guilty too. My last contract was for an S6 Edge Plus and I paid £45/month. The iPhone 6 Plus was priced the same. Two years later when I was due an upgrade the S8+ and 7+ were £68! Since then I am not interested in contracts and have bought my phones used in brand new condition and saved 30%.

Its no secret that SIM only plans are rising in popular and that people are holding on to phones longer. This is why Carphonewarehouse isn't experiencing revenue growth.

36 plans are simply disgusting. Look at the iPhone X was £1000 last year. Now you can buy it in new condition or even sealed on ebay etc for £600-700. In two month time that will become £500-600 as the Xr will flood the market.

Lesson: Save a shed load(40%) of money by buying a year old phone in nearly new condition.

I’m waiting for the phone to come out/reviews so I can at least see if the camera upgrades are worth upgrading early. Otherwise I’ll wait until December when my yearly upgrade is due. I think I will probably end up ordering it next weekend though.

The note 9 pricing is nowhere near as bad as Apple’s.

The base note 9 is only £899 and last year the note 8was £879. So it’s only a £21 increase.

The note 9 with 512GB is only £1099 which is £350 cheaper than the 512GB iPhone max.

Even the 512GB note 9 is cheaper than my 256GB 2017 iPhone X.

Apple are expensive but they have been screwing us over with pricing since Brexit. None of the other tech companies took advantage of Brexit like Apple have.

I get discount with O2 because I work for the NHS which is why I stay with them. This year I’ll get the 512GB max and if there aren’t any compelling reasons to upgrade next year I’ll be keeping it for a few years. The only real reason why I’m upgrading this year is for a bigger screen.

At retail the Note 9 is comparable on price but on contract it’s significantly cheaper I’ve found.

I wish the note 9 ran iOS because I’d get it.

I’ll most likely do a 3 year contract with O2 which will help reducing my bill and just stick with the phone. I usually take out insurance as it’s more more comprehensive than Apple care (loss and theft) so I know I can be covered for the 3 years. I personally am getting to the end of upgrading every year because there are such little gains. This year has to be one of the most incremental updates and even if will get the XS max for the bigger size, it’s only going back to the same place we were with the plus sized phones. I don’t know why Apple couldn’t have just released the X max last year like Samsung were able to release a big phone last year despite bringing in the infinity design. I think this is a prime example of Apple milking features over many years just to drive updates.

In the past I used to be a storage whore but am no longer thanks to streaming services and cloud storage for photos.

Does anyone here currently fill a 256GB or 512GB phone? If so, with what?
I still have about 120 GB available on my 256GB phone and I pay for iCloud storage and google drive space. I would just get the 512GB in case I end up keeping it for a few years. I know it will happen at some point due to updates being more incremental as the years go on.
