I live in New York and see so many folks carrying Pro models, and I often wonder why they chose them. (I, for one, is very happy with my "mere" iPhone 13.) It's heavier, it's more expensive -- so why did you get one?

As when I bought my M2 MBA and watches, I get the top of the line. Sometimes the difference between that and a "lower or base" model might not be much, but I don't want to later say I should have gotten the top model. Luckily the cost is not a factor for me so that doesn't affect my decision.

I had the 12PM and didn't feel the 13PM was worthy of the upgrade. But when the 14s came out I preordered the 14PM. I am completely happy with it and there is no second guessing my decision.

This works for me but of course I never think less of anyone who is more budget conscious on their decision. It's great to have choices and variations.

I think it's a combination of I can afford to buy the pro phone and I tend to keep my phones 3 years so the additional cost is really not significant over that timeframe. It's nice to have the pro features, but I definitely don't need them.

I would have answered…

I just chose the best, just to have the best.

But that's not quite true, so I had to answer 'other'.

I choose the high end model with the max capacity offered…because that's what I want. It's really that simple. Don't need it. Just want it.

But I upgrade every 2.5 to 4.5 years, so when I do upgrade, I want what I want.

PS. Current iPhone is the 11 Pro Max, 512GB.

I selected the first option as one of my choices, but I think the "need" part should be replaced with either want or need/want. As I have the pro model because I just want the camera upgrade, I don't need it as I do not make money from my iPhone photos or anything like that.

I upgraded because I was at a concert with a friend and the iPhone 13 Pro Max's videos she took at the venue, you could see the faces of the artists better, more clearly and close than with my own eyes... And of course better than my normal iPhone 12's vids and pics. So I was like damn, that.... that I want.

ProMotion was a bonus I had my eyes on as well for some time.

For me, it's basically the cameras. Photography is both one of my favourite hobbies, as well as an important tool at work (I often need to photograph/film training sessions and lectures, for example). I take photos almost 365 days a year, sometimes dozens in a day, so even incremental improvements are valuable to me in this area.

Everything else is just a bonus - though often a welcome bonus.

I think there are also a whole bunch of people - not least in somewhere like New York! - where the cost difference between a Pro and a non-Pro is trivial. If you're paying $6-8k a month in rent - and many do - what's a few extra hundred for a Pro phone?

I don't have a 14 series phone, I hope it's appropriate to participate in this discussion.
Among the choices in the 13 series ( I have a 13 Pro), I seem to remember a difference of only $100 USD from model to model at the time I purchased mine in Nov 2021).
It didn't make sense to purchase the bottom feeder model, and the upgraded camera was important to me, and the MAX model was too large physically.
I really liked the form factor of the 13 mini, but with my old eyes felt a need for a larger screen.
So the Pro was an easy decision.

If you want a decent storaged phone you’ll get around $850 MSRP. You can upgrading to a pro model for $150 ‘makes sense’ . I guess Cook’s business plan worked for me:(

I like having a better camera, the best features, etc. When you break it down the monthly payment isn't that much more to get a pro. The weight has never even remotely been an issue for me.

I got a 14 Pro for the quality of life things. High refresh is nice. 2000 nit outdoor screen is actually helpful. I never have to worry about not being able to see my screen. I like the telephoto camera. Dynamic island is a lot more fun to use than the little colored block behind the time on the top left.

It only cost a couple hundred more than the other one. I spend hours a day on my phone and I feel that quality of life bump is worth it.

OP's poll/discussion is not specific to the 14 Pro (or Pro Max). It's specific to Pro model iPhones, of which your 13 Pro is one.

So, entirely appropriate.

I currently using 12 PM and before Xs Max.

First of all I wanted better battery and camera.
And I also couldn't go down in screen sice, because I had getting used to that gorgeous 6,5" screen, and when they released a 6,7" I was sold😊

I want the best camera possible on an iPhone. Battery life and screen brightness are factors as well. I would prefer the phone be slightly smaller for easier use with one hand, but not enough to compromise on camera and/or battery life.

I have an offer with Verizon where if I switch to them, I get the iPhone 14 Pro for free AS LONG as I give them my old 13.

I got the 13 pro because I wanted a bigger screen than the 12 mini I had back then. I went for the 'pro' for 'future-proofing'.

I have a 13 Pro. I chose it because I wanted 120Hz display, and a zoom lens for photos. Not that I really love going around taking photos as a hobby or work, i just like having a zoom lens. I also prefer the matte glass back.

Also, the 13 Pro vs the 13 has 6GB RAM vs 4GB. More RAM is better for longevity and just general device fluidity. I plan on keeping this phone until they have a USB C iPhone, which is looking like it's going to be fall 2024.

Well, I bought the 13 Pro, because I considered the basic 13 too expensive for what it offered (or lacked actually), compared to 13 Pro - no ProMotion, no 3rd camera, no LiDAR.
Actually this additional camera turned out to be surprisingly useful to me, as I was able to make macro photos of my health problems and it helped the doctors to better diagnose me and see my condition change over time.
