Sorry to double post.

I forgot about the rumored spreadsheet program for iWork. That may be better than Intel Office.

Dear Santa,
I've been a good boy all year, so can you please wait until Steve Jobs unleashes the iPhone and then grab one for me and leave it in my living room whenever that might be? I'll leave milk, cookies and carrots for the reindeer out the night after the announcement. Thanks, Kris.

What do you think, will that work?

Now that was funny :)

And Shard... why are you always correcting people? Just curious :)
Anyway, countdown to MWSF!! Whooo! It will be better than Christmas, without a doubt!
And that Toshiba 100GB HD is ****in unbelievable, one day we'll have one of those inside our brains, connect with .Mac and IM only by thought, eheh.

PS - A quick question, any of you know what was the best selling game console ever?

I'd buy it

Apple should buy Nintendo, or at least try to partner with them. Games on the iPod aren't much better than playing them on your phone. I wouldn't exactly characterize Apple hiring game developers to make these types of games entering the gaming market.

Apple buying Nintendo would be Apple entering the gaming market. Add iTV functionality to the Wii, give it HD (which it will get eventually), and add Nintendo games to the Mac platform allowing online play between the console and Mac, much like the Xbox 360 and PC.

They wouldn't have to change Nintendo branding and it would elevate Nintendo's mind share considerably and give Apple another powerful incentive to encourage Mac purchases from happy Wii owners; and it looks like there will be a lot of those.

I have my firesuit on. :)

the difference between fiscal year and calendar year

i know that arn has clarified, in regards to an entirely different article, what a certain person meant when they were referring to quarters (i.e. Q1 of 07).

that being said, in this article, an analyst from prudential which deals entirely in FINANCIAL quarters in all aspects of their job, doesn't specify if this is calendar or financial quarters... any clarification on this?

even financial analysts use both fiscal years and calendar years. the difference is based on when each individual company starts and ends its year. Apple's fiscal year begins October 1st, which means every fiscal quarter for apple is exactly one quarter off from the calendar quarter. So for Apple, 3Q FY07 = 2Q CY07 (in words: 3rd quarter fiscal year '07 is the same as 2nd quarter calendar year '07).

As to which one the analysts were referring to, the best I can find on free financial websites is this from marketwatch.com:

"In a research note, W.R. Hambrecht analyst Daniel Amir said channel checks suggest Apple will be launching an iPod-like phone, commonly called the iPhone, at the MacWorld show. Gene Munster, of Piper Jaffray, said reports from Taiwan-based manufacturers indicate Apple is ramping up to produce as many as 12 million iPhones during the first half of 2007."

That blurb is pretty ambiguous. I think this is probably referring to calendar year 07, especially since we're already 2 months into apple's fiscal year 07.

My freinds GF who works for rogers (who is also not technologically inclined) told me they are getting an apple phone, two different ones.

I believe it will be out soon and I will be buying it.:D

No, please. No mechanical parts in a cell phone. It's bad enough in an iPod. I am super gentle with my iPod, and my second one's hard drive just died after less than two years. No way in hell I'll ever buy another hard drive-based iPod.

I'm in the same boat as you... VERY gentle with my iPod... unfortunately, though, I take it everywhere so it's bound to feel every bump I do. Thanks to AppleCare and understanding Apple Store employees, I'm on my 4th iPod (3rd "freebee").

YET, It would be nice to carry my whole library... it's not gargantuan like some people here who have 200GB of music... but it's larger than 8GB. And I do tend to cycle through and listen to "everything." I'd sacrifice size for a PhonePod that could hold all my music, yet have a dependable HDD.

...but it won't happen.

Munster (as reported by Appleinsider):

"Also likely, though with a slightly lower ranking of 6 out of 10, are rumblings that the iPhone will be available in 4GB and 8GB configurations, bundle an iSight camera, and work on multiple wireless carriers.'

"Unlikely rumors, which Munster calls "a stretch," include an ultra-portable 12-inch MacBook Pro (4 out of 10), radio-transparent material used for iPhone casing (3 out of 10), iPhone to feature "iChat Mobile" video and instant messaging (2 out of 10)..."

I find it interesting that Munster rated an iPhone with a iSight as a 6 out of 10, and the possibility that the iPhone will feature "iChat Mobile" as a 2 out of 10. Those are contradictary rankings if you ask me....I think it demonstrates how arbitrary these rankings from Munster are.

I'd have one in a heartbeat if they could shoe-horn one of these in :D

yeah - how far we've come :) :) :)

The linked article talks about a 100GB 1.8 inch HDD - and shows the picture below.

Uhm, 1.8 inches? Maybe one fifth of what the chief developer always thought was 9 inches... Either that or I'm pretty sure I don't want to shake hands with the guy on the pic.

Truer words have never been spoken.

What about the tablet and the "True" video ipod? Also, will Adobe and Microsoft be there? Photoshop CS3, and a universal binary Office would be nice.

Well, MS has already said that the UB of Office won't be out until Q3 2007. And that's Cal. quarter and not fiscal.

Sure, it sounds good because they are telling you what you want to hear. Think about it though, this announcement is really saying... "Great news! Apple will release everything you want in January!" I think that hurts its credibility.

Also, I think that 1-10 scale is a little off. Some of those items should be a little lower on the scale... like iChat Phone 0/10.

Analysts are continuing to weigh in on the circulating rumors about Apple.

Prudential's Jesse Tortora...
According to the report, Tortora also expects Apple to produce the long rumored wide-screen iPod with target release in late 1st Quarter or early 2nd Quarter...

This makes sense as rumours go that a new 100GB hard drive that is iPod-compatible will soon hit the market.:)

Cool. I'm hoping to finally buy an iPod once it hits the 100GB range (my music collection is already at 52+GB and thats not even half)!

Why does everyone think the PhonePod will come in two flavors? Apple has always operated under the KISS principle - Keep It Simple, Stupid - and having two phone flavors doesn't seem like a simple product line-up to me.

What do people what out of the PhonePod? Well, I know I want something that will:
-1- make calls,
-2- sync with iCal
-3- sync with iPhoto
-4- sync with Address Book
-5- sync with iTunes
-6- Have an Alarm
-7- Have a Timer
-8- Run simple games
-9- Text Message/Note/Memo/Planner Functionality
-10- (optional) Take pictures

The current iPod does numbers 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, & quasi-9. It is already a very smart device... nearly a PDA, minus the touch sensitive input and random bells and whistles. I think that adding 1, 4, 9, & 10 will make 95% of the population very happy. I think this is what Apple will shoot for.

For people who need a full-fledged smartphone, buy a blackberry or a treo. For people who just want a simple phone syncronized with their Mac, buy a PhonePod.

*MAYBE* years down the road, the PhonePod's potential markets will diversify (like the iPod's did), and there will be a PhonePod Pro... but I do not forsee it in 2007. I would hedge my bets on late 2008 if anything.

If you're going to put a HDD in the iTV, why not this one? Plenty of space to buffer a stream from your computer and work as a PVR. On the PVR side, don't allow transfer up to the computer for "permanent" storage. To keep forever/own, you still need to buy from the ITS.

I doubt that tiny little drive would be put in the iTV as it is going to be expensive at release. There are much less expensive and small alternatives to be used, if required.

Me thinks that the hired game developers were most likely for the games on the ipod and not for anything else.

I agree. Plus let's not forget the full-screen video iPod. Could make for a great handheld gaming device. (Hmm, maybe with some added motion sensor technology like in the Wii....)

Of course it would be nice to see but if it isn't ready, it isn't ready - plain and simple. Apple should not rush an important product like a new OS to market at all costs simply to beat Vista to the punch. If they did this, 10.5 would be unstable and/or buggy and this would be extremely harmful to Apple's image - the release would be a disaster.

Apple will release 10.5 when it is ready, no sooner. If it is ready in January, well, that will be one hell of a surprise, as all signs point to spring and not any sooner. This is something Apple needs to do right and needs to take their time on, so I for one do not mind being patient.

Oh, and it's "opportune" and "Window's". :p

didn't Apple beat Vista 6 years ago????

iPhone != Chocolate?

I got a chance to play around with the LG VX 8500 (aka "Chocolate") phone today, which bears a strong resemblance to the mockups on the wiki, and I really hope the real thing doesn't end up like the chocolate.

Offical webpage of the Chocolate

The chocolate has some cool features, (including the mp3 player), but it's got four horrible design flaws which any similar phone would have to avoid.
  1. The side buttons are hard to press if you don't know exactly where they are, including the END button.
  2. The CLR button is too easy to press - in fact, it's a touch sensitive button. Many times I hit it by accident with the middle of my thumb while reaching for one of the directional buttons or the OK.
  3. The difference between the touch-sensitive upper buttons and the normal lower buttons is very disconcerting. I kept lightly touching the number keys, and nothing was happening, since they have to be pressed, then I started pressing the touch keys, which wouldn't depress, and would occasionally press twice.
  4. The key buttons were very inconveniently placed. They were far too far down the phone to be able to hold it comfortably (i.e. balanced) in one hand, and still press them with that thumb,
I'd love to see an iPhone, even one with the same kind of slider hiding the number keys, as long as it had better design than this phone did.

yes... let's violently shake an object with a HDD...

;)

Not my first recommendation.
