This one, it's better to confirm than assume.

I've heard some horror stories about people bringing their devices (under the US reseller flex policy) overseas and not being able to use them with local SIM card.

of course, I plan to check at some point anyways but... if it isn't recognizing as an ATT Phone on unlock page of ATT, I wonder what options I would have to get it unlocked haha

Therein lies the problem.

If somehow it's locked to AT&T, my guess is you need the following:

  • Walmart receipt
  • loan agreement
  • proof of payoff
  • screenshots of the AT&T online unlocking web form saying it's not an AT&T device

You'd need to escalate the issue and provide the documentation to Apple Support. Apple operates the database of device lock status so they have final override.

I see thanks.

I'll just test it sometime then !

I looked at this thread when the SE first came out but before the terms of the deal were clearly discussed. I didn't do this because I didn't want to be locked in for 30 months (I've been with AT&T for a long time but may switch later this year or next), but if you can pay off the full amount with no penalty, there's kinda no reason not to, right? I mean, you could pay off and then sell the SE and probably even make a profit?

I wonder if it's like T-Mobile. You have to use the device on their service for X amount of time before they'll unlock it. Googled this.

Yes, certain restrictions exist.

However, it's supposed to report "not eligible" for devices locked to AT&T that are still under installment. If it says "This is not an AT&T device." that becomes a problem because that means it's not on AT&T's database, therefore, they are unable to unlock it.

Only way to unlock then would be to escalate to higher level support on Apple (first level CSR probably won't be able to help).

could you try att in the unlock site and see what it says? Or for someone who does and has paid it off

As mentioned, it says the same thing for me (not an AT&T device) but I popped in an international SIM so I was able to verify it's unlocked (even though it hasn't been paid off yet). ;)

Do you have to be eligible for and upgrade and use it to seize this deal on Wal-Mart (AT&T)?

Thanks!

Online, yes.

In-store, you can add-a-line or sign up for an account.

You get the discount with device installment plan (no penalty for early pay off).

I can confirm that the iPhone SE, at least if you buy it through this deal for AT&T, is unlocked.

After the deal worked for my wife’s upgrade, I decided to use my upgrade to help my mother-in-law who is on sprint. We had to get her a new SIM card but it is working for her.

Also, I paid both off and AT&T had no issues with me doing the Walmart deal and paying off immediately.

I'm still on Mobile Share 35GB. As mentioned, there's surprisingly almost no strings attached to this deal.

best iPhone deal I’ve gotten in on

I never get a deal. Aside from when I got the 64gb X for $550 with a 2 year contract through att loyalty in 2017 and when subsidies were a common thing rather than full retail pricing and financing plans

Mine was locked, tried a T-Mo sim at the store ... and after an hour and change with ATT on the phone yesterday, I tried again today and its now unlocked.. seems it was one of those devices stuck in the system in limbo

Definitely a good idea to check and not assume its unlocked, just because it shows up in the ATT unlock site as 'not an ATT phone'
