I'm busy downloading 15.8.3 on my original SE right now. It's no longer my daily phone but when it was, it seemed to run perfectly fine in iOS 15. I should say, too, that I used to switch it off at night though as a matter of routine. I still love that little phone. I should have got Apple to replace the battery in it while it was still possible. Don’t fancy doing it myself.

I'd be curious your overall battery life before and after things settle down. I'm already at 15.8.3 but I'd be curious how much we lost through the ages.

Also does does your iOS consume 7.14 GB storage all said and done? Mine was less under earlier versions of iOS 15 and of course even less under earlier iOS but it's crept up a measurable amount over time even though functionality is equivalent from my perspective.

I believe you can still get it changed at apple for $69

So, besides security, which is already out of date after latest download, any big improvements over 13.1?

No reason not to upgrade. I am using my SE1 to type this message and I find Safari to be pretty smooth. All apps are pretty much available on iOS 15. That’s the main attraction of the upgrade.

is it operating best at 13, or will 15 be a worthwhile upgrade?
Don’t do it. Battery life will definitely suffer as a result. I have 2 SEs running these two versions and there is a notable difference. I even think iOS 13 is pushing it but it’s much more tolerable than 15

If there’s no reason to upgrade then remain on iOS 13. If you need to have certain apps, such as Netflix which requires iOS 15, then you should upgrade.

Security is just a theoretical issue, if OP is a person in dire need of security, that old phone is a no go anyway, more important factors are performance, battery life, and app compatibility. Only OP knows what's best in that regard.

iOS 15 offers widgets and an improved Home Screen. That, along with the security and app compatibility, are the only tangible upgrades over iOS 13.

I still use my 16gb OGSE for shows on Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime along with web-browsing and Bluetooth streaming podcasts and music to a speaker. It’s still an impressively useable device in 2024… iOS 15 is a must for me due to my use case.

iOS 15 still get updates from time to time.
Running it on my backup phone (SE1) and its working fine.
Don't have that many apps on it, battery health is between 80%-90% (can't rmeber exactl)

even with a new battery the performance will be impacted

Running the latest iOS 15.8.3 with a new battery with no performance issues. It works smooth and with the new battery it lasts me two days easily.

If you like this phone, it's worth investing in a new battery.

iOS 9.3 on 100% battery health is different from iOS 15.8.3 on 100% battery health [battery replaced]

It will not last as long as on older version... Performance is about the same as iPhone 6s or iPhone 7 on iOS 15.8.3

We have an iPhone 6S running 15.8.3. Same hardware as the OGSE and it works perfectly. The battery was replaced a couple years ago with a high-capacity one. These are very inexpensive online, include the tools, and you can change it yourself in under 20 minutes.

iOS 13 is dead and few apps still provide updates for it. Every iOS 13 device could be updated to iOS 14/iOS 15.

my 64gb SE battery is down to 86%. the life is terrible. takes about 10 minutes to go from 20% to 1%! this phone is on its original battery and running 15.8.3

my 32 GB SE is running 13. its battery is at 92%. it's offline, so i don't know about life difference.

holding off for the release of the SE4. i hope it is well designed and a good replacement for this SE1.

The SE4 will be a huge upgrade over the SE1 and in many ways a better buy than the iPhone 14/15 still available for sale despite some of the shiny features it might be missing.
