i think at the previous keynote, the slot had not been included, probably needed to be designed still, look at this photo:

Exactly, in the MWSF pictures from the keynote there is clearly no SIM card slot, but in the real life photos from later that day inside the magical glass case it looks like there is.

If the iPhone wasn't locked to AT&T SIM cards, you could jut pop in any SIM from any GSM provider and use their service.

So the other SIM cards are indeed blocked by software? For example can I buy one and bring it here (Costa RIca) and pop my providers SIM would it work?

I guess I don't understand the issue here. Cingular requires SIM cards to get onto their network, right? So why wouldn't the iPhone have a SIM slot? Furthermore, Jobs said it would have one, AND he showed a slide clearly showing "SIM" on the top of the phone.

The question was not if there was a SIM card, it was if it would be accessible.

This photo (along with all of the SIM carf chatter) clearly explains what the dot (hole) is next to the headphone jack - it's where you push a paperclip in to open the SIM tray. I'll bet the slide was clearer in person, at Macworld, but all of the photos and captures miss the detail of the tray door.

why I replied:

So people can ACTUALY undertand that there is a sim card and that it is removable
