iPhone the iDud?

Seems strange... 2 hours before iPhones hit the Cube, and only 400 people in line there. Did the line-hype drive too many people away from that line, is iPhone just too expensive, or has the the hype just overreached the real demand?

I just went by our Apple store- only one in this state- 20 people.

I dunno. Seems to me there is interest, strong interest... but by trying to sell this as the consumer product of the century and all and having such a weak looking response, well, it does not bode well, I think.

Looking at this today, this looks to be set up to be a dud. Not that they will not sell a bunch... just not up to the "hype" levels.
 
and the bigger question is: how much did Verizon and/or Microsoft pay you to bash the iphone?

What is your motivation for posting this lameness?

The evidence for your reasoning is anecdotal at best, plus the fact a lot of people are still at work. Not every one that wants an iPhone could get off work, nor are they interested in camping out at an Apple or ATT store.

I think the sales numbers are going to be huge!
 
Yeah, what a flop. Only 400 people waiting in line at one store. Geeze, most phone launches attract way more people. Apple might as well close it's doors. </sarcasm>
 
Dude, there is 400 people queued up outside the store, hours before it opens. Repeat that to yourself.

I think that it's because the iPhone is relatively pricey, it'll be mostly people with jobs who will be buying it. Hence the shorter-than-expected lines currently.

Everyone I know who is getting one is going to go later this evening, simply to avoid the lines.
 
remeber that most people have 9-5 jobs... we still have 30 min before we can leave... then at least 15 to travel...

Edit: and if there are only 25 people per store and 2000 stores, thats already 50,000 just in one evening ...

But seriously though, if you don't want a damn iPhone - that's great, that's your choice.. but it's pathetic how many threads like this there are here and on howardforums from idiots that just feel naked at the thought of thousands of people running around with these things in their faces come 6pm tonight. If you (obviously) feel that left out, you should just give in and get one yourself.
 
The line at Oakbrook, IL, the tiniest Apple store I've ever been to, has to be between 150 and 200 people.
 
Please name any other cel phone/ PDA in history that has compelled people to line up *at all*.

Please name any other Apple product for which people have lined up so early, and in such volume! This didn't happen for Tiger, Panther, the iPod Mini, the Nano, the iPod, etc. etc. etc.

These lines rival the most sought-after game systems, which except for the PS3, had price points way lower than the iPhone.

When the stores were first opening they used to get huge lines. And they weren't just 100 to 200 people. I remember standing in line for Oakbrook there had to be over a thousand people there. Michigan Avenue was even longer.
 
zgh1999: Dude- I am not basing the iPhone- I am bashing the HYPE around it. With all the "you gotta have this, it is the latest and greatest" etc... they built a mighty hill they have to climb for sales levels. If they do not do that- and do it convincingly- I will be the smallest voice you hear pointing this out. Can't you just see all the media reporting that only 1000 people bought one in NYC? Can that be good?

I guess what I am saying is the hype was so out of control, they have to make incredible sales levels for this to look like a success. Otherwise, it is de facto a dud in the media. Make sense?

That would be 400 people at the biggest Apple biggest store in the world. To me- and what scares me- is ONLY 400 people at that store 2 hours before launch (from engadget, so take that with a grain of salt). That is not enough to fill a movie theater on a movies opening day. AT APPLES FLAGSHIP STORE.

400 people at a store here would be major news. 400 people in NYC is a minor nuisance.

I am buying one tonight. That is why I checked out our Apple store here. I plan on walking right in at 8 PM or so, and getting right out again! Like I said, it is NOT a bash on iPhone, it is a bash on the HYPE!

Try changing "cel phone/ PDA" to "Consumer Electronic Device" and look at the equation again. I do NOT think the iPhone lines look anything like the major lines for XBox or PS3... And I think that is a much more fair comparison than PDAs

Who's hyped it? Apple haven't really; it's all the associated press.

Bash away, it might be theraputic for you, but it's unfounded. We'll see how the sales figures stack up at the end of the financial year.

For now, if you're unhappy with the discussions, then please try not to annoy other people in the process who are enjoying themselves.

Right, I'm sure Microsoft or Verizon payed this guy to say something bad (even though he didn't say anything bad) over the internet. Yep, you got it. You unraveled his plan.
 
My goodness, are you not allowed to make a topic on this forum about something other than how great the iPhone will be? The original poster was only giving an opinion about how he thinks the sales won't match the hype. The fanboyism is really killing me here.

Jeez, have an OPEN MIND FOR F**** SAKE.

I think the iPhone looks like a really nice product, and I was impressed when looking at the videos etc when it was announced, but I feel it is too expensive, and an example of how big ass companies usually try and take advantage of its customers.

I think a lot of people are not retarded like the ones who are waiting in line. It's not like the PS3 where there was only like 10 per store. All the stores are going to be getting like at least 1000 phones, so most people realize there's no point in going to wait in line when you'll be able to walk in there tomorrow and buy one without any problems.

Dude, people have historically lined up for game systems. And the Playstation has had more than 10 years to develop the Playstation brand, and fan base, culminating in the long lines for the PS3.

The iPhone is a brand new product in a totally different category...a category that has NEVER had a device that garnered this kind of attention. But even so, the line ups rival something like the PS3 (oh yes they do).

It's you who needs to look at the equation again. Consider the iPod: a huge consumer electronics success by any standard, and it's never lured out people like the iPhone has.

For an opening day, this is a success no matter how you look at it, and no matter how much you try to suggest it's not.
