You need to be rooted to install a custom recovery, or to install a ROM with the loki patch.

Not to mention, if you're rooted you can download ROM manager, and have it put the custom recovery on for you.

I didn't have to root my HTC One to install a custom recovery. I just unlocked my bootloader and installed TWRP. I then flashed a ROM that was already rooted.

Either way, it doesn't matter. The two processes basically go hand in hand.

The US version will work in other countries. I'm not sure on LTE compatibility, HSPA+ will for sure work. It is possible to buy the normal one from your carrier and put the Google Edition ROM on it via root though.

I'm not interested in 4G at all. As long as 3G works. Is rooting the same as jailbreaking because if it is I don't think I'm going to want to root, I don't want crashes and lags.

No. Jailbreaking for an iOS device basically takes Apple's closed OS and makes it (more) open. Normally with iOS, you can only install apps via the App Store. Jailbreaking gives you Cydia, which is a gateway to way more tweaks. Think of that as the checkbox on Android that says "Allow installation of apps from unknown sources".

Rooting is basically what is says. It gives you root access to Androids system files. Just like sudo in terminal on a Mac would do. Rooting always apps to access system files, and allows you to do things such as install custom recoveries, install custom ROMs, remove carrier bloat, etc.

I was never much of a person to jailbreak iOS devices (I still have an iPad 3 unjailbroken) but I always root my Android devices. Rooting alone will cause no stability problems. If you downloaded a ROM with bugs, that could happen. But that Google Edition ROMs are built straight from the system dump of the actual Google Edition phones. I've been using the Google Edition ROM for over a month.. no issues at all.

I'd say the S4. I left my iPhone 5 for it and I'm much happier to be honest. 5" screen and notification light make a huge difference. If you do end up getting a Note wait for the Note III which should arrive by September.

Ditto for me. Haven't missed my Iphone 5 for one second.

Is it not possible to order one from the US and use it in another country? I live in the UAE.

You can order from the US ( çheck out negrielectronics.com) . But in all likelihood, you will not get warranty services in your çountry for the imported device. If something were to go wrong, short of sending it back to the US, you are on your own.

It might be a better idea to just get a regular S4 or One from your local store. Use them stock for a while. You can look at rooting and rom-ing down the line, if you need to.

I'm not really worried about warranty, there's a really good popular local store here that fixes smartphones that are out of warranty.

I need someone now to give a final confirmation: If I ordered the 'Google Edition' Samsung Galaxy S4 from Google Play, will I be able to use it in the UAE (make calls, send messages, emails, etc. through the 3G network (not LTE) using a SIM from a local UAE carrier.

On the Google Play online store it says Google Play edition. Is that the one?

Yes, it comes unlocked so you can use any microsim from any local carrier. And yes, says Google Play Edition.

Great, thanks!

Does the Google Edition come in 64GB or only 16? What about the color? When I 'google' I only see the edition in 16GB and only in White Frost.

Guys! I read that the Google Edition can't save media on an SD Card. Is this true??

So that's a technical issue that will hopefully get fixed with a firmware update? Thanks for the article, but it only talks about apps not being saved on the SD card not media (images, videos, etc.), or is it the same?

It looks like the same issue to me.

To install a custom recovery you do not have to be rooted, just use Odin.

And custom roms are most likely pre-rooted.

You need full root access to the phones /root to install a ROM or a recovery

Those Odin Roms have root access baked in

I'm currently out of the country and have left my laptop behind and Google Play is not available here so once I get back I'll use a VPN connection to access the site (as it's also not available in the UAE). Just wanted to explain why I'm asking all these questions.

Unfortunately, the Google Edition's only have 1 SKU each. Which is 16gb (as it's the most popular model). As fas as storage goes, the external SD card can save movies, music, photos, etc. The ability to install apps to your SD card was disabled by Google in either ICS or Jelly Bean for security/piracy purposes.

Samsung re-enabled it in TouchWiz. It is still possible with root, and could come back to unrooted devices.

Even still, with the Google Edition.. you could get it and throw in a 64gb microSD for 80 Gigs of media storage.

Okay thanks for the replies, getting the 16GB and a 64GB SD Card is a good idea. Will I be able to save apps on the card? Or do they automatically get saved in the internal phone memory?

Some people dislike TouchWiz.

I don't like TouchWiz either but running a launcher helps a great deal IMO. Also not being able to save photos and videos to an SD card would be a big deal for me personally.

I believe you can only get the S4 Google Edition in white with a 16 GB capacity.

Apps are automatically saved to your internal storage. I believe you need to root in order to save apps to your SD card.
