What type of cable comes with the 16 PM? I would assume that it is a USB and not TB cable?

Those charging cables always are only USB 2.0 with 480 Mbit/s. If I understood correctly the 15 Pro has USB 3.0 with 5 Gbit/s and the 16 Pro USB 3.1 Gen. 2 or 3.2 Gen 2 which both have 10 Gbit/s. So a TB cable wouldn't make any sense and is much too expensive for just charging, what most people do.

After seeing some screenshots of folks doing the transfer between phones without cable... I'm not sure mine is actually transferring across the cable and that my 15PM is just charging the 16PM. I thought I saw something about it being wired, but now while transferring it doesn't say that.

anyone try unplugging the cable during transfer?

I didnt take a picture but the first time I did the transfer, I believe the plugged in the cable after I clicked Quick Start and the transfer estimate was about 46 minutes and going up so I decided to Reset and start over. The second time I kept the cables plugged in before I started and then I saw the icon of the 2 iphones with a cable and it only took about 10 minutes to do the transfer. I used a TB3 cable and I had about 130GB of data.

This is just a random pic I got from Google but if you see this icon then it is not using the cable. I couldn't find a pic or video of the cable transfer method at the moment.

Welp, I am surprised. Only took about 2 hours, maybe 2:15. It actually worked quite well. most passwords work. Photos and history and files all good.

I'm taking this as a success. Much better than last year for me.

15PM > 16PM with 240W TB4 cable, 407GB
Wow nice! I have about 700 GB Data will try it also with TB4. Do you think the battery will last? Can I charge in between via magsafe?

I believe mine said keep them "connected" - but there wasn't any clear pointer that it was using the wired connection instead of maybe meaning just keep them close to each other.

Well, I picked up my 16 Pro Max today and took the old-fashioned route. I backed my old phone to my MacBook. I didn’t bother unpairing my watch. Whilst I was in the Apple Store, I plugged my new phone in to my MacBook and the first thing it detailed was an upgrade to 18.0 and I don’t know what that was. I upgraded to 18 as it suggested, although it was already on 18. Complete restore including loading of apps was done in 45 minutes and it even prompted me for my Apple Watch so I didn’t have to unpair it from my old phone.
Very smooth and seamless

The new iPhones are running a slightly earlier build (22A3351) of iOS 18.

I also upgraded to the newer version (22A3354).

I've been reading this thread since yesterday morning. I have a 1TB 15Pro Max going to a 1TB 16 Pro Max. I already have the $60 Apple USBC/TB4 cable but was concerned about charge. I did a full backup to my Mac yesterday which was 626GB in size. I opted to go wireless direct like all previous years. In prior years it always took about 7 hours. This one said '1 day'!!! - I thought must be incorrect calculation. I wake up today and it shows 15 hours remaining. This is insane. Progress bar just about 1/2 way. I had 18.0 on the 15 pro to begin with. No betas ever. I'm tempted to just start fresh again and just setup the new phone fresh and let it sync from iCloud Photo Library. I'm not a fan of iCloud restore. I suppose I could restore from the computer backup but even that crapped out at 99% with a bizarre error message. I ran that again and it finished in 5 minutes but do I trust that backup? Not sure. So far not having fun.

Wow, that's extreme!

I would hope a cable would be faster. Mine did 430GB in 4:20.

dumb question here, but since I'm relatively new to eSIM, is the cellular account also transferred at part of the "new phone setup" or is that a separate step?

With 407GB and the 15PM at maybe 96 or so when I started. Ended at about 47%

Someone mentioned they were able to use a USB-C dock to connect the two iPhones and charge them at the same time! Probably worth trying

wireless transfer - estimated 15 mins on the start screen, then 4 hours once i clicked through 😂

wired transfer w/ tb4 cable - estimated 15 mins on the start screen, 35 mins once i clicked through. transferring atm from 256gb 15 pm to 256gb 16 p.

before starting the transfer, i plugged the tb4 cable in, and when it gave the option (from icloud or from iphone) the iphone picture showed two iphones linked with a cable and data moving along the cable.

edit: storage used was 80gb btw, i forgot to say.

I’m a bit surprised I can’t seem to find a verified answer for this yet, but can anyone confirm that on Friday, when I pick up my new 16 Pro, I can do the restore from back up data transfer over USB C from my iPhone 15 Pro?

I know the traditional restore from backup routes are over local WiFi, or from an iCloud backup, or back in the day using a Mac and iTunes backups. But given this is the first year with a new and old phone having USB C, I was wondering if I can quickly transfer directly using a cable?

This support article discusses doing it from a lightning cable, perhaps it just needs to be updated…

Two iPhones can treat a cabled connection as ethernet and it'll do the transfer over it if it is faster.

Note though that USB 2.0 speeds (which is what a charging cable will get you, and what non-pro iPhones 15 and 16 are capable of) may have comparable or even less bandwidth than wifi. It'll be iPhone 15 Pro to the 16 or future iPhone pro, connected via a 10 gbps or higher cable, which will really benefit - thats an over 20x higher data rate than a charging cable.

Since the cable will act like a network connection, this can work with other apps too. For instance, signal quoted me 1 hour (after some settling) to transfer my message history, but quoted me 2 minutes with a cable (15 pro to 16 pro). Signal's networking is not robust so you have to have the cable plugged in before starting.

iPhone 15 Pro connected to iPhone 16 Pro transferring about 500GB via Thunderbolt. It’s saying 12 hours and continuing to go up. No faster than WiFi last year. Let’s just hope it doesn’t fail multiple times like it did last year. Took me a few days to actually make the transfer work.

It’s one of the steps that the process goes through but it’s doesn’t happen automatically. You have to tell it to transfer your eSIM. Pretty straightforward but if the servers are busy it can be buggy.

I wish I knew why the migration process is so buggy.
First, the new phone was stuck on the "Please wait while we activate your new phone". The back button icon didn't register and the phone sat there for 30 minutes.

I plugged it into my Mac and used Apple Configurator to update the phone from 18.0 (22A3351) to 18.0 (22A3354).

This time, I got to the screen to authorize the new phone from the old phone, with the spinning stars "QR code". It wouldn't scan from my new phone at all, so I had to do the manual authentication (a 6 digit code).

I got to the screen to activate Face ID on the new phone, and it would not focus on my face. It said move the phone lower, so I did but then my face was out of frame. I made sure there was plenty of light in my room, but finally I was able to find an angle where it worked.

I did finally get to the transfer screen. It had two options:
* Download from iCloud
* Transfer from iPhone

The phones were plugged in, and the icon actually illustrated two phones cabled to each other. Perfect!

Next, it wants me to activate all my credit cards in my Apple Wallet by providing the CVV code. First card is up, and I take the card from my wallet and type in the CVV code. "Invalid Card: Check the information aon your card and try again." Ugghhhhhh

I'm skipping it now and will add it later, because I'm sure I'm entering the correct 3 digits lol.
