MacOS/iOS '26.latest' on Mac and iPhone (for context).

I've rarely used this feature. I think I once clicked it by accident, having first paired my Mac and iPhone (according to my iPhone) in November 2024, under what must have been earlier iOS/MacOS. But today I thought I'd give it a 'proper' go, having heard my phone give me a familiar FB Messenger 'sher-ting' sound from two rooms away where it's plugged in, charging, locked, but on my wifi.

So...I eagerly open the iPhone Mirroring app on my Mac...and get told to unlock my phone (EDIT which I can't seemingly do from the iPhone Mirroring app) ⁉️

Dear Mr Federighi...not that you're reading this...but have I missed something here? If I've already paired the two devices, which I have, but I still have to GO AND GET MY 🤬ING PHONE to unlock it to use mirroring, I may as well just USE MY 🤬ING PHONE. No?

Has a trillion dollar company missed this oversight? Surely not? It has to be me? Right? What have I not done?

(And sorry if I've put this in the wrong category. It's a bit hit or miss where to put things that relate to accessing my phone from my Mac. It could happily sit in either Mac or iPhone subforums.)

It shouldn't be asking you to unlock from your iPhone every time. If you haven't used the feature in a while, it'll ask you to unlock from your iPhone. It may also do it after the Mac or iPhone restarts.

It's somewhat like how devices will occasionally ask you for your passcode or password to continue using Face ID / Touch ID if you haven't unlocked using the passcode or password recently.

If it's still asking to unlock from your iPhone every single time, then something's gone wrong. Try revoking access and setting it up again.

With iPhone Mirroring application launched, select menu iPhone Mirroring > Settings. Select Authenticate automatically. Of course, you will have to authenticate at least the first time.

No need to rant, my friend.

This is something different. I think OP is referring to the times it asks you to unlock from the iPhone. Sometimes you have to punch in the passcode on the iPhone to continue using iPhone Mirroring.

I have mine set to "Ask every time" and don't have to grab my iPhone. I can unlock it from the Mac.

Perhaps.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .. but I've yet to be prompted to unlock from my iPhone since authenticate automatically has been enabled in iPhone Mirroring.

I always have to unlock my phone. I figured it was a security feature. I don't use it often though so perhaps that's why.

The 'two rooms away' bit is probably the actual issue here — iPhone Mirroring uses BT LE for the nearby-device attestation, only the video stream rides over wifi. Once the phone drops out of BT range the Mac falls back to the unlock-on-phone flow even if you've authorized before, and 'Authenticate automatically' in the Mirroring settings only kicks in once that nearby check passes. Moved my phone off the shelf in the next room onto the desk right next to my Studio and the every-time prompts stopped.
Also worth checking the iPhone side: Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity > iPhone Mirroring. If any recent OS update cycled that toggle the pairing state can go stale and you'll get one-off re-auth prompts even sitting next to it.

I reboot my mac each morning. Because of that, the first time connecting will always require me to punch in my unlock code on the phone. Generally I only want to connect once each day, to handle a Microsoft Authenticator prompt to log in to the office. I find it annoying and wish there was some way to not require this. Since I must have my phone in my hand anyway, I've just given up on using iPhone Mirroring.

This will be me I think. Having to go to where my phone is to unlock it, makes the features completely pointless for me.
