Would it all be plausible for the iphone to see a memory upgrade? Possibly 8gb and 16gb?

Also not much has been said about the iPhone for Sept 5. I wouldn't be surprised if a low refresh occurs and of course the much anticipated iPhone update..

Remember...one more thing.

Don't think so.

Just like the last "announcement" was all Mac related, this one will be almost certainly just iPod related. I wouldn't expect to see anything for the iPhone, except of course things that affect the "iPod" part of the iPhone...i.e. ability to hook up to a kiosk (if those rumors prove true), etc...

Will we see a software update? 50/50...but a hardware refresh? 0% chance.

I posted this comment in another thread but Ill say it again here. Why do so many people think there will be a new(er) iPhone in a couple of days?? The original has only been out 2 months!

You can't forget the iphone is VERY close to the ipod in terms of family. I highly doubt Apple would ever have an iPhone only announcement.

50/50 on the update? Wouldn't Apple be going against its word. iPhone is a very expensive product and look at what they did for Apple TV owners. They gave them the ability to play YouTube videos.

I'm sure you meant to say iPod in there somewhere, instead of saying iPhone three times, but I'm just not sure where.

Where did Apple give their word that there would be an update on September 5th? They said they would continue to improve the experience over time...not 2 months later.

I dont know what their word was, so I have no idea if they would be going against it. The example you used with allowing AppleTV to play youtube videos is a software fix. Yes, Apple will update/upgrade the software of the iPhone at regular intervals Im sure, but to have a newer hardware version so soon after its release isnt going to happen.

No.

As for the source of Apple saying they would upgrade the iphone software:

Appleinsider Report

I don't think you understood (or read) my comment. I said that Apple did say there would be software updates, but it wouldn't be against their word if nothing happened on September 5. Where in that article did you read that there would be a software update on September 5 that would justify you saying they were going against their word?

I think just a memory upgrade may be possible, they do that sometimes, just update the memory on there products. Its a possibility but im not sure if its going to happen so soon after the iPhones release.

Think about the number of iPhones out there on shelves with the 4GB/8GB configuration. As with any product memory increase, they will allow existing stock to run down so they don't have a huge number of the old products sitting around. Enough time has not elapsed to allow the stock to run down...and no matter what you hear about sales figures, the iPhone isn't exactly flying off the shelves.

Totally Possible

Why the heck not? Or how about this:

4GB - $399
8GB - $499
16 GB - $599

Flash memory prices drop like crazy and the current iPhone could be built for something like $250 at launch... if the "mini iPhone" isn't coming until January, this would really help holiday sales.

The only reason the iPhone needs any help at all to sell its because Apple have killed it with that high price and the AT&T contract tie-in! If they sold them unlocked for about $299 (4GB) they would sell much better, even without a memory increase.

I think 8 gig is plenty for a phone.
I still havent used half of my phones memory.
What you going to do with 16gig on a phone, is it really necessary?

Way too soon to update hardware
You can easily save $100 by buying a refurb
I see them expanding the iPhone line before changing the existing model

I would expect to see iPhone software 1.1 before holidays, though

No, its not.

But Apple's not going to update them. Not yet, its only been 2 months...please!

Maybe a software update....come on buy music on the go!!!!

As much as I think a video-capable phone should have 16GB I don't think we'll see an update in memory soon.

I think we're going to see a big improvement in features on the iPhone when Leopard comes out. It seems clear to me there's lots of dangling unimplemented features on the iPhone that will make the device much more usable (as a PDA for example) when they are.

I mean it would be a perfect time to release a software update. The point is that they will release an update with new features at one time or another. This event I think would be perfect grounds for Apple to tout the new features.

As for the memory only upgrades. I really haven't heard of anyone that I know buying a 4gb (which is probably only like 3.2gb) iphone. I have only seen ppl buy the 8gb iPhone. So because the popularity of 8gb iphone. I could easily see them upgrading it and lowering the cost so..

8GB = $499
16GB = $599

I'd expect announcements of a European iPhone release with a small chance of a different iPhone model coming out that's identical to the US version but uses 3G instead of EDGE (which is old tech over here). While that's what I'd hope for, I'm sure manufacturers have to release specs of their phones for approval months ahead of release and those specs have to be public. In other words, either nothing new's coming iPhone-wise or it'll be announced and come out in six months time.

I used to hope for that too. O2's upgrade to EDGE and my reassessment of how much 3G network coverage there actually is here (it's pitifully far from full unless you're in a city, and even then...) makes me believe we'll see the same iPhone but possibly with MMS support.

I'm a realist :)

It would be absolutely crazy for Apple to make any hardware changes just 2 months after launch. An update in the flash memory could come in the future, maybe 6 months after launch(pure speculation), but not this soon. All of the existing customers would be just furious, and I just couldn't believe that Apple would alienate all of their new Iphone customers.

I would not be surprised to see the Ringtones feature added, as this has been rumored for some time, in addition to wireless Itunes downloads. Besides this, I feel that we will have to wait until the release of Leopard in October to see another major upgrade to the software.

I've only not had 3G coverage when in the middle of nowhere. Down here in Brighton I nearly always have full 3G reception, as do I when I'm in London and as I did when I was at Uni in Nottingham. If O2 suddenly roll out EDGE everywhere overnight then I won't really mind as much. The last time I checked, however, there was absolutely no mention of an O2 roll out anywhere apart from one person who noticed what appeared to be an EDGE connection somewhere in the heart of London.
I've accepted the fact that the Iphone doesn't do video calls, I didn't do them that much anyway. Lack of MMS is pretty dismal though and I would have hoped a new phone in this price range would have a better than 2 megapixel camera. I really hope that they don't do an AT&T and try to con people onto 24 month contracts or offer no subsidisation of the phone.
