I've only not had 3G coverage when in the middle of nowhere. Down here in Brighton I nearly always have full 3G reception, as do I when I'm in London and as I did when I was at Uni in Nottingham. If O2 suddenly roll out EDGE everywhere overnight then I won't really mind as much. The last time I checked, however, there was absolutely no mention of an O2 roll out anywhere apart from one person who noticed what appeared to be an EDGE connection somewhere in the heart of London.

Well I don't currently have a 3G device but network coverage from the maps the networks provide doesn't look good at all.

I'd love to see proper HSDPA 3G on the iPhone but I really doubt that and, as I say, I'm fairly sure the Euro iPhone won't have 'normal' 3G either. As ridiculous as that may be.

We'll have to see. I suspect we only have to wait another couple of days to find out.

Here's a map, the darker blue is full 3G (video calling etc)

Ah, I've had a 3G phone for a few years now and its always been pretty good. Those maps don't look bad to me, I wouldn't expect 3G coverage in the sticks. I'm with you though, we'll know the answer pretty soon. If it is EDGE only though then people are going to be stuck with dial up speeds pretty much everywhere. :-S

To bring us all back to reality, I would not be surprised if there is some type of software update that applies to the iPhone on Sept 5. Downloading directly from iTunes perhaps?:)

Highly doubt that Apple would add storage to the iPhone so soon. I definitely think we'll see this at MWSF, though.

I think 8 gig is plenty for a phone.
I still havent used half of my phones memory.
What you going to do with 16gig on a phone, is it really necessary?

Sure, 8 gigs is overkill for a phone, but you have to realize that this thing is an iPod as well. And 8 gigs for an iPod... not so much.

There will be no hardware update to the iPhone on September 5. You will see the RingTone feature added to the ITMS and there might be the iTunes Kiosk support. You will have the European introduction, etc., before you see any hardware updates to the US iPhones. We are talking Q1 2008 before anything happens.

Apple typically drops iPod hardware refreshes just under once a year or so. Even then, they make a few enemies in those that (ignorantly) bought a new iPod at the end of a model cycle.

There's no way they'd risk taking a major PR hit and piss off 500,000 new iPhone owners only 2 months after its release.

I don't understand why people don't just look at Apple's relatively repetitive (and thus predictable) track record when trying to second guess their next move.

luckily there's no need to worry that happening with iphone since they have to announce new models several months in advance or having them published by fcc. oth, for the same reason, if they want to have new model available for holiday shopping season, they'd have to announce it soonish.

I'm just saying that the update could be JUST memory. It wouldn't piss off that many people.

As for the software update. I personally believe that it is the best time to launch and tout the new features.

P.S. -- We are being speculative.

Let's say if they did, won't the early adopters just be suffering from a dose of Caveat Emptor?

Seriously.Think for a minute before posting these stupid threads.

You are just the grandest douchebag of them all, aren't you?

I'd just accuse the OP of generating a Topic sentence that'll attract the most amount of people.

For what it's worth

1) Samsung has said that their new 16gig NAND will be available in products this in 2007.

2) RBC analysts have told investors to expect 16gig iPhones in stores before Christmas

3) No new FCC filings are needed if all that is changed is the memory size. Only one filing was submitted for the two models out now.

Well if RBC analysts told investors to expect 16GB iPhone in stores before Christmas then is MUST be true

Considering how unpopular the 4Gb iPhone is I wouldn't sat it's out of the question. Remember the Apple TV HDD upgrade, only a few months after launch.

For this to happen tomorrow though would make this one of the best kept secrets in history. Maybe next month when Leopard is released. That would still get it into stores before the Thanksgiving Christmas season kickoff and would also put it more than 90 days after the original iPhone release.

Research shows 9 out of 10 lame topics could be avoided if the OP thought before posting.

A replacement iPhone this week is nothing but wishful thinking for those holding out. If we see anything in the next year or so, I still think it will be an iPhone "Mini" for $299 or so. It seem both predictable Apple will come out with more than one iPhone platform, and evertime within recent history Apple product roll-outs start with the "Pro" model and goes down. I'd guess though it's still too soon for another model. Wait a 6 weeks for the holiday season and iPhone purchases to taper off.

I'd really dig Exchange support Tuesday.

This is purely an iPod product announcement. The iPhone will be mentioned (in conjunction with some of the new iPod features), but there will not be a hardware refresh for the iPhone.

There will be software updates to the iPhone, if they do the whole mini iTMS and circle thing, but don't look for a new model it has been only 2 months. Look at the life span of the iPod, it is roughly a year between refreshes

So now that 4Gig iPhones are gone, 8 Gig iPhones are $200 cheaper, and there are 16 Gig iPod touch - how long to you think now untill there is a 16 Gig iPhone?

I say one month. Tops.
