Can someone explain the economics of this to me? I bought an iPhone 11 pro max 256 for $1193 last year, its now going for $900 on cl/eBay. That means it cost me $293 to use this phone for a year, plus I paid for apple care it cost $120 thus making the total $413. The same phone was $60/month on the IUP. That would mean instead of $413, I would have paid $720. Round it down -> $300 difference. Plus the credit report hit, which isn't a big deal. Is $300 worth the cost to be able to just sell it on your own? I guess for some but not me.

Well the quick argument against it would be that $900 seems a bit high from a quick search for a used phone. Seems $750-$800 is more likely. What are ebays fees %10? So you’re looking at $720ish. Plus it’ll likely go down more after Friday.

Still make more selling yourself, i think the difference as more like $150, not $300.

But by all means if that is worth it to you go for it! Or I’m totally wrong and you’ll get $300.

Trying to sign up for IUP for the first time. If I add a trade-in, it doesn’t give me the option for IUP, strange!
Probably because if you're continuing an IUP program, you need to send the phone back to Apple to get the last loan paid off...you can't get credit for it outside of that.

hey guys..I'm about to sign for a new IUP for 12 pro max...wanna sell my XS Max that was on IUP and has been paid off now (used it on Tmobile)....

question: Is this XS Max from IUP UNLOCKED?...can I sell it as being unlocked?
yes

Hmm you make a good point about the trade in value. I’m lucky if I can get $500 for my pro cause I’m trying to sell it now. If in the instance that I want to preorder the 12 and get approved for the iUP, does it start when I receive the phone or? And how will it work if the phones release in Sept next year?
Yes, it starts when you receive your phone. After 12 payments, you're eligible to upgrade it again. This year, the phones are being released late so I technically could have upgraded my 11 Pro in Sept of this year since I had made 12 payments.

Hello everyone! I'm still relatively new with the IUP program. I currently have the iPhone 11 Pro and have made 13 out of 24 payments. I pre-ordered the iPhone 12 Pro on Friday (10/16) and will be picking up the new iPhone at my local Apple Store this coming Friday (10/23). So my question is, it looks like I have my 14th IUP payment for my iPhone 11 Pro on 10/20. When will I get charged my first payment for the iPhone 12 Pro? Will that happen the day before I pickup (10/22)? Most likely, I'll be paying "double" for October? Once I pay my first payment of my new loan for the iPhone 12 Pro, my previous Citizens loan is closed?
Your 11 Pro loan is closed when the 11 Pro has been received back.

I saw several for $900-925 on eBay but myself have always sold locally for over a decade.

Let's do the math further I find it helpful for me, maybe someone else as well. All numbers rounded.

Let's use $850 as a buy it now since prices will go down over the next week:

$850 selling price
-10% ebay fee = $85
-2.9% of paypal fees = $20
$15 (shipping coast to coast)
$850- $120(total cost to sell on ebay) - $120(apple care) = $610.

$610 is the out of pocket expense for buying it outright vs $720 IUP.

let's just say $100 to avoid the hassle of selling it yourself which I think is pretty reasonable given the things that can go wrong selling a cell phone or meeting someone especially during a pandemic.

So yeah breaking it down further at the worse price you can sell for right now - $100 it's not worth it, but if someone wanted to make the most of it they have a few options:

- Sell local or other ways to avoid the eBay fees, making it $220.
- Sell a month before the phone is announced officially at a higher price. Possibly another $100(use a backup)
- Maximize credit card options to reduce the initial price( 3% apple card, cashback rewards, etc. )

I can agree with that math. Not that $900 is impossible, I just think it’s less likely.

I also get to live without a case, Apple doesn’t care if the phone is pristine at trade in time.

So for the very first year when one joins the IUP, there's no way to trade in your existing iPhone? Hmm, seems kinda lame for them set it up that way.
Doesn’t Apple allow you to trade in for store credit independent of a iPhone purchase? You could do that.

I can see why you can’t for monthly payments - that throws off the Math unless they could that as your first x payments which probably isn’t built into the system.

The only reason I'd like to trade in my XS Max while enrolling in IUP is because T-Mobile has a promotional rebate of $150 when trading in an iPhone at the time of buying a new iPhone 12 through Apple. I could of course just pay in full, or monthly on the Apple Card, and do the trade-in at the time of pre-order; that would satisfy the requirements of the T-Mobile deal (and I end up with $370 Apple trade-in credit plus $150 T-Mobile prepaid card = $520 total).

I was just considering enrolling in IUP for the first time as well, but looks like that would only be possible at the Apple Store in person if I really wanted to make the trade-in part of the IUP transaction.

I will likely just pay in full and pre-order. IUP can wait till next time I guess :)

I wonder if giving back your last IUP phone to pay off the remainder of the balance count as a 'trade in' to qualify for the $150 T-Mobile deal?

I don't think the IUP trade-in would qualify; that's really a "lease turn-in"

I just tried getting pre-approved in the Apple Store app. I'm not currently in IUP, though I was previously and paid off the phone. Choosing pay monthly shows 24 month 0% APR financing through Citizens One, which is the IUP. But it also includes trade-in credit for my current phone and gives me a choice to get AppleCare+ or not, which I thought was mandatory with IUP. Any idea why this is different from what you said?

I'm going to check with Apple too.

24 months at 0% interest is not the upgrade program; it's another option. Upgrade program is financed over 20 months and includes Apple Care in the cost. At the end of 12 months you can go to a new phone but you get nothing back for your existing phone.

I like the IUP. If you want to get the latest phone every year, you can sell the old one or do IUP. I used to sell the old one. The day I bought it, I’d keep everything in the box except the phone itself, and put it immediately into a protective case. Then when selling, I’d get the box back out and put the phone into it so it looked as nice as possible and tried to keep it in perfect shape. Then hope you can sell it for half what you paid for it... And deal with people flaking out when it comes time for them to buy....

With IUP, I don’t have to worry about that. Just order the new one, they send a box to put the old one in, don’t even have to pay for shipping. I am living the caseless life now!

SAME. I've had every iPhone (on launch day!) and the stress of selling every year and try to recoup as much as I could (early on to people in Thailand, Russia, etc) was nice to leave behind when IUP launched. I check resale values every year and the most I feel like I've "lost" by not buying outright and then reselling has only been ~$20 each year. Not having the stress is well worth it.

However this year, I locked in a great resale value the week before pre-order so I'm just going to keep making my payments on my 11 Pro (using the $ I get from the resale) and am starting a new IUP program with the 12 Pro.

@Jarrahammer @nrvna76 I just called Citzens and the support person i spoke with said she can't waive tomorrow's payment. She suggested I talk to Apple. I told her Apple told us to talk to Citizens. I guess my last attempt will be to ask Apple in person when I pickup my new iPhone 12 Pro and return my iPhone 11 Pro. At this point, I really don't think we'll get our 14th payment credited. I understand the timing of the new iPhone can't be the same every year, but this still kind of sucks!

For the discussion on is IUP worth it: You always have the option to pay off your phone and keep it instead of sending it back. ... just do the balance pay off AFTER you get your new phone. Call or chat with Apple to remove the ’hold’, then call Citizen’s One and use the automated phone thing to make a payment the amount of the balance.
If you can and sell it for more, go for it.

Another thing to think about... after my 14th payment I will owe citizens around $602. With 10 months of AppleCare remaining that can be canceled being $83 of that. Leaving $519 remaining, which if I remember correctly is $19 over the trade in price for a pro max. If you do a trade in rather than the IUP you can be eligible for more stuff like T-Mobiles extra $150.

Might be worth considering if you have a pristine 11 series to turn back in...

Got charged for the taxes. And got an email about my AppleCare + coverage. Apparently I’m only covered until Oct 17 2022.. glad I’m covering it already. lol

thanks for this. I have a 11 pro max and I wanna get out of IUP. What will get me the most $$ for this phone ? Trade in at T-Mobile or apple? I can’t add a line. Been with T-Mobile long enough for loyalty bonus I think.

i also have an old iPhone 6 I could potentially trade to T-Mobile and use credit towards a 12 or 12 pro

I also have an xs max I can either sell privately or trade in.

-End goal is to have 1 12 pro max 256gb and 1 11 pro max or second 12 pro or pro max.

what would u guys recommend is the best way to accomplish this? I feel like the IUP is very expensive because I don’t think I want to pay for Apple care anymore and instead just use American Express extended warranty like others have mentioned

That's a lot of moving parts, and it depends on what you value. If you are ok selling that will clearly make you the most money, but has risk. I think trade-ins when not adding a line are similar at T-Mobile and Apple with Apple having the $150 gift card.. it's worth chatting with representatives at both in order to get the best deal. Also, be weary of trade ins taking 30 months vs instant trade in value.

I was just pointing out that at the 14 payment mark, the value of the IUP is diluted a bit, and trading in normally may return more value.

be curious how Apple is going to handle IUP next year with phones being late and if they return to the September release next year

So I just spoke to an apple rep and clarified some questions in case anyone else has some questions that I did

I have an 11 pro and I have an iPhone 12 pro on order. Thinking of upgrading to the 12 pro max.
- The rep said NO they don't do another hard pull on your credit score. They keep your credit pull for 30 days
- They said I would just need to return my 12 pro and I can keep my 11 pro since the loan is paid (not sure, didn't question it but I'm sure I still had money owed on the loan)
- If I wanted to upgrade to the 12 pro max to reach out to customer service to order through them so they can pull the same credit report...again not sure if this is the exact case (can anyone chime in on this)
