I've had my iPhone X since November and I'm generally really liking it. Love the OLED screen. Coming from having an iPhone+, I do like the smaller size, but i wouldn't mind it being a tad larger in size. Maybe if you split the size difference between the X and 8+ that would be a better size for me? I do wish the onscreen fingerprint tech shown at CES was included in the iPhone X. I like the Face ID, but at times when it doesnt work, an onscreen fingerprint option would be better than typing in your passcode.

I agree with you completely. But...

You know how many posts on MR go something like "I would never pay $1000 or more for a phone" or "Apple is losing its core customer because of its pricing" and on and on? Thousands upon thousands of posts by college students, the unemployed, day workers, you name it.

So it's easy to say "anyone can afford an X its only $1.73 a day over the course of 2 years" but in the end you've got people abandoning their carriers to save $10 a month and others sitting around all day using free wi-fi at Starbucks to save $3 and that's real money to hundreds of millions of people.

The iPhone X is a luxury. That's a fact we need to face.

It's all very relative? I think there's a good argument that any iPhone, at least any iPhone current sold by Apple, including the 6S or newer (so not including the SE), is a luxury. Heck, cellphones are a luxury, arguably.

And to your point about saving $3 on wifi, that's true (people do that). Whether it actually makes sense or not is a different question, but perception matters, and from the point of view of perception, I guess I agree with you...but again, whether any of this makes sense or not is a different question.

Good post. And if one looks at this forum as a cross-section of iPhone owners (skewed significantly towards tweakers/enthusiasts and far away from my mom and the Average Joe of course) the pricing of the iPhone X is quite a hot button topic.

Half the posts go something like "I could never pay more than $800 for a smartphone, no way, screw you Apple!" and the other half go "anyone can get a credit line for a measly $1,250 and the iPhone X only is pennies a day, my nanny can afford one!"

This is how it goes with luxuries in discussion forums, by the way. Same script plays out in the forums for all the other luxury brands. Outrage over the price delta for marginal performance bumps followed by the boilerplate statement about how the mop man at McDonald's can afford it.

it all boils down to what you want to work for and save for if you live a life where you do not make tons of money. I am sure there are some super wealthy (Buffet) who doesn't have any interest in an Iphone X but could purchase millions of them. THEN there are the celebrities who are wealthy that are probably GIVEN the X's despite being able to afford one. If i could pick one thing that bothers me about the price point it isn't the STARTING point of the X its all the other "needed" peripherals.... the AC+, the wireless charger, the cases etc... It ends up being around $1600 when its all said and done. (for the 256 of course)

I never considered a phone an
investment, mainly because it's just a tool that is nothing more than a commodity that is superseded by something else the following year. Although, as much as smart phones are becoming expensive today, they almost seem like an investment based on purchasing accessories, cases, additional cables, Applecare wireless charging docks, etc. It all adds up very quickly.
