A case doesn't make any difference for me - if I put the phone inside the Apple leather case or take it out, the result is still the same. The camera simply can't focus anymore after updating to 11.2 rendering the phone pretty much useless for me since I take photos each and every day, usually. I now take a pocketable camera with me everywhere I go...
Yeah this is very frustrating. I completely agree.

Has nothing to do with a case. I don't use a case and my iPhone 8 has this same issue, right after I updated to 11.2. It IS the software. Don't listen to the shills coming in here creating Apple apologies because their phone doesn't have this bug.
Amen to that

It depends, some of us are able to stop the problem by simply removing our phones from their cases. Mine does this and it starts to get the problem back if I put the case back on or even close to my iP8+ (like from the side). In this instance, it appears to be a problem with the magnets in the case. It has been suggested that perhaps the enabling of fast wireless charing in iOS 11.2 caused this.

Now it seems more people are reporting the problem, perhaps without any relation to the case used.

Mine can’t focus anything far with regular camera. Portrait works fine though! But when I switch to the regular mode, it won’t focus at all! I have iPhoneX 11.2

Same issue here. Upgraded to 11.2 last night. Tryig to take some photos this morning and only works with the telephoto lens. You can see this by fixing on a point in the distance, then gradually zoom in. As soon as you get to 2.0x it clicks into clear focus.

I don’t use a case.

Sounds like a bug. Any workaround found appreciated!

No issues here on my X.

My laptop case at about 15cm wide angle lens.

Telephoto lens selected.

It only affects things in the distance for me (i.e. 20m+), so wouldn't expect it to show up on something this close.

Guys, i might know what's going on.

Do these two things:
1. Turn the "live" mode in "Camera" on and take a picture. If the focus comes back, you can turn it off if you like.
2. Reset all the settings (no need to erase all the data).

I think the problem is somehow located at "live" mode.

I have the "Dallas" folio case by Kavaj that has a magnetic portion for the front. Prior to the 11.2 update I would have focus issues at close range, post 11.2 update it is unable to focus at any distance or zoom. Kinda frustrating since the magnet on the folio doesn't really seem necessary.

I'm hesitant to use any case with a magnet for fear damaging the camera motor, but maybe a software fix is coming. Has anyone had any luck de-magnetizing the case, or do they use neodymium magnets?

I have the same KAVAJ Dallas iPhone X case and have the same focusing issue. When I remove the case everything works fine. I have been using KAVAJ cases for many years on many devices, and have never had such issues. I’ve reached out to KAVAJ Support for assistance. Hope the magnets don’t damage the camera.

Oh man, I think this actually fixed my problem! I've been posting more in the other (longer) thread about this issue and, while rolling back to 11.1.2 fixed the camera, it was impossible for me to run 11.2 without the blur problem.

It's strange that whatever "settings" I had caused no issue on the previous firmware yet crippled my camera on 11.2.

Thanks!!

I think the problem is in the "live mode" in Camera, you probably set it off in default. That might also explain why some people have this issue and some don't even they're using iOS 11.2

looking at all these fantastic photos, my x photos arent good at all , half out of focus, noise, blurring, over exposed etc :(, spoke to support to no avail, i read some X cameras are dodgy, best idea to get a replacement? updated to 11.2 still the same.. same before & after update

Look my replies man.

I discovered the focus problem on my iPhone 8 plus, immediately after updating to 11.2. It seems to be confined to the built-in camera app. Normal view photos and videos are fine, but the camera will not focus if you zoom or just use the 2x button. Interestingly, if you choose 2x for photos, things are blurry, but if you tap Portrait mode, the app focuses instantly. It's a temporary workaround for photos only. Apple support worked with me for quite some time (working through 2 people and finally to engineering). They ran remote diagnostics on the iPhone, had me video what happens, gathered a whole bunch of data, and it is now in the hands of the software engineering team. I'm supposed to talk again tomorrow. Definitely seems to be a software issue. One site posted instructions for downgrading to 11.1.2 https://www.gottabemobile.com/how-to-downgrade-ios-11/

Just an update on my previous post. Spent more time on the phone with an Apple tech support engineer. She downloaded more data from the iPhone, along with more videos and photos to document the problem, and passed it on to software engineering. Definitely a software issue related to 11.2. After the support session, I restored the iPhone 8 plus to iOS 11.1.2 and the camera apps instantly worked perfectly again. 11.2.1 came out today, but they haven't had time to examine the data and come up with a fix yet, so I'll stick with 11.1.2. Anyone tried the new update yet? Sometimes things accidentally get fixed.

Things don't get accidentally fixed. Someone consciously fixes the problem.

Apple often fixes things without specifically listing them in the release notes. However it's not accidental.

They didn't specifically make the camera lense lose its ability to focus properly—obviously something they changed in the 11.2 update inadvertently created an unwelcome behaviour. Therefore, another change could conceivably correct the problem "accidentally" or shall we say unintentionally, even if it is unlikely.

Happy to report that the 11.2.1 update fixed the focus problem on my iPhone 8+ (thank, God)!

Since updating to 11.2, the camera of my iPhone X has a huge issue focussing. Focus on the wide angle lens only seems to work for object close to the lens but as soon as I try to focus on something that is 1-2m or further away, the images are completely out of focus. It won't work with the stock camera app and also fails with third party apps.

Anyone with the same issues?

Yes I do have the issue focusing with telephoto lens only with Lightroom mobile app but if you do manual focus and double tap on focus for auto focus trigger it’ll fix it. I’m still waiting for Adobe to fix this issue. But still it works partially if u try this trick it might help

Double tap on auto focus button after doing some manual focusing..

Hello, I realy hope that someone can help me. The problem is that portrait mode not working in any conditions, it is impossible to get depth effect, the effect appearing just for one second and gone, and i get message move further away. For this moment I find only two solutions, to reset all settings or restore the phone, but this problem appeared again after 1 or 2 days, It is really anoying. Anybody know who can affect this problem? Because its seems that is not hardware problem, because after reset I can take portrait picture without no problems.. I try 11.2 11.2.1 and 11.2.2 the problem is the same...

You probably need yo report it. But it’s been stated in the website thay Portait Lightning is still in beta... that’s why it’s buggy. I rarely use it actually.

I have iPhone X, GOT the camera issue at 11.2.... still problems om 11.2.5...
Apple ran diagnostic and I took sine videos and sent them. They will call again today..
Very annoing!!!

I'm on 11.3.1 on iPhone X and have this issue. It occurs at literally anything below 2x zoom. The issue isn't objects up close - it's objects at a distance. I can change the zoom to 2x and it's fine, and then slide it to 1.9x - boom! Blurry. The issue only occurs with the back camera - it does not occur with the front camera. It occurs in every app.

I'm a DJ and not being able to take pics without using at least 2x zoom is the suck.

FYI, the selfie camera is usually referred to as the front or front-facing camera (being on the front of the phone), and the primary/main camera on the back of the phone is typically referred to as the back camera. Just trying to help you avoid confusion :)
