When you wake up and pick the phone from nightstand when both head and phone are tilted 90 degrees it does not work. Also does not work when you just wake up.

In regards to the notch, it will always be there not matter how long you have the phone. The iPhone X will realise its full potential once the sensors/earpiece are hidden under the screen and faceID works from wider andgles and with better consistency aka touch ID 2.

That’s frustrating it doesn’t work for you

Face ID is flawless in the dark for me. I often check my phone on the middle of the night too

Definitely not user error. When I had my X, i could never unlock it first thing in the morning and could very rarely unlock it while its sitting on my desk right in front of me. I always had to pick it up unless i stop practically right above it.
Found a fix for that. I use my wallet to prop it up slightly. Works well after and you can just peak to see new emails/text coming in. The thing is, you should not need the wallet

Right. I mean there are ways around that, but I said screw it and downgraded to the 8 and haven't looked back.

Space gray 64GB. Had it for a month.

The good:
1. Screen is beautiful. Vibran colors but not overblown like Samsung. Can get plenty bright and no iseues with flickering for me. A joy to look at.

2. Form factor is almost perfect. Slightly larger than 8 but almost the same viewing area as the much larger 8+. I say “almost perfect” because it can be hard to reach the top one handed. Fits in all pockets including the inner blazer small one.

3. Battery life is very strong. Easily lasts through the day with moderate use and im left with 40% by bedtime. Ive seen it enter low power mode just once. Charges fast enough with iPad’s 12w charger.

4. Build quality is 2nd to none. Has a reasuring heft and the stainless steel gives it another lvl of sofiatication. If you pair it with Apple leather case, its not far from a Vertu. Screen is very resistant to scratches despite me using it wout a screen protector.

5. Speed. This thing is fast. Animations run smooth and moving through apps is a breaze. Does not get warm under gaming. Very consistent performer.

6. Cameras are very solid. Good quality shots under almost all conditions. 4k60 fps and slow mo mode are fantastic. Hard to believe how fare we have come in mobile photography.

The bad:
1. FaceID works very well when you hold the phone at a certain distance and angle but thats a fairly narrow range. It wont work in bed, or on a table, or ladscape, or when you wake up, or wearing shades and the sun behind you. Its not as consisten as TouchID gen 1 and defenetly not as consisten or as fast as TouchID gen 2. Should be labeled a Beta feature.

2. Price is about 200$/€300 more than it should be. Well reflected in lack of demand.

3. Portrait mode never manages to get it right. Always softens the eges.

4. iOS 11. Enough said... but not a shortcoming of iPX in particular.

The ugly:
1. The notch is awful to look at especially at night, when reading or watching videos/movies. Its not a feature but rather a compromise and takes away from the gorgeus display.

In conclusion, the iPhone X feels a lot like first Gen 2008 MBA. The form factor is definitely the future but the inconsistent FaceID coupled with the ugly notch and sold at a stiff premium give it the 1. Gen/beta feel.

One of the better, more balanced reviews I’ve read on here. You share the exact same sentiments as me regarding the X in every category you mentioned. It’s almost as if I mentally wrote it myself and am now reading it back. I especially agree with the MacBook Air gen 1 comparison. It was cool to see it back in 2008 and gave us what the future of laptops looks like but it took until the second/third redesign (that’s the one everyone remembers) for it to become popular. The price being another factor at the time with all the new tech involved which is kind of similar to the X today.

These joke threads are getting out of hand.

Translation: “This thread is such a joke for pointing out all the flaws of a 1k phone I bought! It fairly praises it but doesn’t fully praise it like I want it to so therefore it is a complete joke to me!”

Yeah silly.
Regarding “the bad” #1: FaceID works for me in bed, on a table, when I wake up, with sunglasses and with the sun behind me.

Yeah so silly.

Just to quote you: “FaceID works for me in bed”

Yes, it works for you. It didn’t work very well for OP and it didn’t work very well for me either before I returned mine. Calling someone “silly” because their experience isn’t the same as yours is the real “silly” here.

I think the OP makes fair and well thought out arguments for the Pros and the Cons as he sees it. Its a shame that many people on MR are so fragile that they can only hear good things about Apple.

Seriously. I am an Apple fan and have been for years, but I’ve never seen such insecurity and this level of overly-defensive mode quite as much as from iPhone X users. You offer fair reasonable critique and you get shot down on here.

The Good....

Battery life appears to be on par with my last phone, the 6S Plus. Nice to have good battery life without having to use a huge phone.

I do prefer not having to hit a button to head home. Swipe up feels natural.

I love being able to switch apps by swiping the home bar.

iOS 11 was a mess on my 6S Plus. It's smooth sailing on the X. However it shouldn't have been so horrible on the 6S Plus to begin with.

I love wireless charging and the dual speakers. Can also be had though on the 8 series.

The Bad.....

Face ID feels like a beta. Fails more often daily than Touch ID did for me. I have to slightly tilt the X at times towards me to get it to unlock. Not as smooth as it should be.

No battery percentage in the status bar. Control Center location is terrible. These things can be fixed in iOS 12, but it still means a year of this nonsense.

I hate closing apps. One extra step and the whole thing feels cumbersome.

It's bigger than I want it to be. Yes I strongly prefer it to the Plus size, but my ideal phone is the SE with a 5" screen. Even the 4.7" iPhone is slightly smaller than the X.

It's heavy. Some people like this. I don't.

Video in landscape mode is a huge compromise. Black bars on the left and right or zoom in and you lose content top and bottom, and have an ugly notch bleeding in.

The Ugly.....

IMO it's way too expensive. I personally cannot justify the price of the X. Assuming battery life on the 8 isn't horrible, I would have been better off with that model.
