If I turn True Tone off in the settings it looks more similar to my 6s LED display, More blue tones. With True Tone on it seems to be easier on the eyes.

truetone definitely makes the color shift a lot (!) worse. unfortunately turning it off doesn't solve the problem completely. still (less terrible but) clearly noticable shifting between yellowish (straight on) and whiteish (any angle whatsoever).

Micro LED is years out, but there's no doubt it's in research and development. The first product That will likely see Micro LED will be the Apple Watch.

I’m in no rush. I think I was reading an article about this earlier. I held my iPhone 5 for 3 years before giving in to a swelling battery. I’m not sure how long I’ll hold on to my X, but I’m hoping for quite a while yet

thats great you won on the panel lottery.

most of us have nasty color shift even at the slightest angle.

for a phone thats $1200, i'd expect a tip top hardware.

first impressions are always critical.

most if not all my friends who got x's are returning them.

Saying most of your friends are returning theirs is purely anecdotal and doesn't prove anything. I can say the exact opposite of people I know (which is also true). None of them plan to return theirs and I know several others that intend to buy one. Again, this proves nothing.

Concerning the angle. It sounds like you have a faulty display if it has "nasty color shift even at the slightest angle". Mine, and the dozen or so others I've examined, only displayed a very minor color shift, and was only noticeable at about a 45 (or more) degree angle. Definitely not a slight angle, and not an angle one would typically hold their phone at for normal reasons.

Perhaps try contacting Apple and seeing if you can do an exchange.

That's because Apple put a LITE version of OLED on iPhone x. OLED displays are so pretty to look at and the blacks are completely black.

Apple somehow managed to make an OLED look like a LCD which is a bad thing.

What's the point of slapping an OLED on a phone if you're just going to make it look like an OLED.
What the hell is a Lite version of OLED screen??? Lmao, the black on this OLed is just like any other panel.......... So you are telling us the black level on this OLED is lighter in color than another OLED paneL? How did you come to that conclusion?

I love the display on my X. I'm coming from an iPhone 8 Plus, and a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge before it.

I much prefer this display to the S7 Edge, that's for sure. I had no issues with the 8 Plus's LCD screen, but I prefer this one instead.

This! I thought I was the only one. When I pick up a Samsung galaxy with OLED I really noticed the difference and am blown away by the screen..... the iPhone X is pretty underwhelming, I can't tell the difference between the X and the iPhone Plus LCD display...

I'm on the completely opposite side. I came from a 7+ (which my girlfriend owns now, so I often check them side by side) and I can undoubtedly see a massive improvement over the 7+'s LCD. The X's whole screen is more lively and not in an adolescent way that Samsung chooses to do it either. I feel like my eyes get attacked when I look at a Samsung OLED, like it's saying "plz notice me Senpai". I feel like the X's display walks proudly and elegantly with confidence but without being a clown in your face. I'm not here to bash Samsung but this analogy best describes how I feel about the two.

Given the choice, I wouldn't go back to Apple's LCD or Samsung's current OLED implementation.

People are just making stuff up at this point.
The sad thing is that I truly believe some of these people really think they are right.... LOL he really think apple turned a OLED into a LCD....IF they did that pretty amazing...............

This whole “lottery” hyperbole is something I resent. Apple’s hardware quality assurance has always been grossly overplayed to the point where you’d expect a titanic recall every single time they release a product. But that’s never the case.

I’m all for people pointing out actual manufacturing issues, because no company is perfect. But making every apple product release a fright fest like the screen tint “issue” just instills an insane fear for potential buyers who are on the fence.

If the colour shift is really that dramatic, definitely return it. No questions asked.

The OLED implementation in the X is way better than the LCD's used in previous gen models, although I will admit that Apple did a great job extracting as much quality as possible with their latest gen iPhone LCD's. The slight color shift off-axis w/ OLED's isn't nearly as bad as the contrast shift you get with LCD's. And the perfect black levels are friggin awesome.

Have had an AMOLED on my tablet (Samsung Tab S2) and have 2 LG OLED TV's...can't wait until LCD is phased out completely, it's such an ancient tech with so many heaving flaws.

I think the OLED in the X sucks. I happily went back to the 8 plus, and LCD, after returning mine. I've had plenty of Android OLED phones before the X, and have never had a problem with them. The X is less than impressive, IMO. I'll take the LCD iphone over the OLED iPhone any day.

So you will get the iPhone X LCD variant next year?

Love my OLED screens that was one of my favorite parts of my S8 Plus I had before the X. I have no desire to go back to using an LCD panel even though the LCD on my 7 Plus was very nice.

Also the amount of people in this thread that surely have their home TVs set to Vivid mode is way to high.

Say what??? How come Apple was able to mitigate something that is inherent to OLED? It is a matter of physics, there are no miracles here! The manufacturer of the OLED panels (Samsung) can't miitigate it, as it is hardware related and inherent to the organic leds used, and according to this post, Apple manages to solve it. How? And the blue shift, another OLED characteristic that everyone reported to be present on the X??
This is the kind of customers Apple just loves.
Apple buys panels from Samguns (not even the last gen, those are reserved for Samsung flagships, and out of the blue these are the best panels, and burn-in and color shifting disappeared just because the panels are installed on an iPhone.
Ridiculous!

Apple does indeed manufacture great pieces of hardware, but let's be a little rational over things.
I am not sold to the X due to several reasons (arguable, as they might be a deal breaker for me, but not for other people), although no one can state the X is not a good phone.
Making unsubstantiated statements is just not a good idea...

Mitigate doesn't mean remove entirely. It means to reduce, or limit the effect of.

Here’s a screenshot from a video showing from left to right, the Pixel 2XL, iPhone X, and Note 8. I think you’ll agree that, at most, the iPhone X is just slightly cooler than normal, but the other two are downright blue.

E56EEB94-B9C5-4232-92FE-7AB139D47EE8.jpeg

It's pretty clear the blue-shift has, indeed, been mitigated somewhat.

As for burnin, we all know the Pixel 2XL has been excoriated for the horrible burn-in that started to show up within days of people getting the phone. No such widespread problems have plagued the iPhone X, so clearly there are ways to mitigate (or, indeed, exacerbate) burnin issues. And that's just one example. There are more.

Apple themselves have mentioned multiple times Samsung was given custom specifics for the design and manufacture of the screen, and we can see objective examples of that when it comes to blue-shift and burn in. The claim that Apple gets hand-me-down screens from Samsung is so false as to be laughable. It's a completely unsubstantiated claim that flies in the face of any and all evidence. Additionally, Apple is one of Samsung's biggest customers. It would only hurt their rep for them to be sending crappy screens to Apple, when reviewers/tech-blogs/etc will clearly point out it's a Samsung screen. There is also no way Apple would stand for getting anything less than top tier hardware for their flagship phone.

It's clear Android fans will want to poo-poo the X, but really it just looks like poor sports at this point.

Honestly I love the screen. I haven’t noticed any uniformity issues with the various tests I’ve run. The phones blacks are perfect. Colors pop. And I didn’t really notice how great it was u til I opened my UPS app and saw how great the brown looked or how pictures looked on Twitter. Always thought that the boarders were black but they’re actually reddish brown. Very nice color differentiation on this phone.

Well, it is the best OLED, and best display in the game. Comparisons with LCD are pathetic from people with blind-ass eyes that cannot distinguish true black from the LCD black mess. Might as well get a monochrome Nokia for those.

I like OLED but Apple's OLED in the X isn't up to par with the Note 8's. I'm talking raw quality wise. I have terrible panel inconsistencies that are really noticeable in dark or light colored apps (I'm not the only one either). Hopefully Apple gets access to newer, better panels next year.

It's your phone. Replace it.
