It just comes down to whether you prefer iOS or Android. I don’t think there are many people out there who honestly are choosing between the iPhone X and the S9 for example. You go with the platform of choice. Apple will likely always win when it comes to a platform, because it’s the best all around combination of performance, apps, security, privacy, ecosystem, and support. Android has been making strides though, the pixel line is trying to emulate Apple’s model.

One of the things that made me stick to purchasing an X this week over a Galaxy 9 was software, higher grade components in quality, no slow downs, no lemons, and wasn’t thrilled about waiting a year to get an update like S8 owners did upgrading to Oreo.

I’d get a Google pixel if they even come close to an Apple level build and weren’t dated. Having just a good camera isn’t enough personally. If you see my phone apps I use you’d think I have an iGoogle phone.

I do a lot of streaming, and a 2.5K displays HDR 4K content just as good as S9 3k display since visual the benefits aren’t there for human eyes to notice a difference.

I really tried to switch to a android too but don’t want to deal with a phone that loses a lot of value really quick in comparison to Apple phones, hard to find a screen ptrotecror to fit the phone properly (ask S8 owners), and cropped 16:9 video doesn’t make the extra space viable anyway between the phones.

Consumers are going to choose their smart phone based on platform, not hardware as you mentioned. They likely make a decision just based off what they know, and what they’re comfortable with.

For Example, I have read where there are devoted Galaxy S Fans where they like android and the S line, because that’s all they know and that’s all they want to know. Same Could be said for iOS and the iPhone demographic. It’s just not often were you see someone alternate between iOS and Android, it’s usually one or the other, which I’m also assuming the consumer has more than one device on the platform they choose.

Which he last uploaded a video to in 2016. There sure is, and there's videos showing vice versa. Anyways, in my personal experience I found my iPhone X to refresh apps more often than my older S7. Maybe iOS 12 will fix this, maybe not, maybe it's because Apple didn't go for higher RAM capacity. Good thing we live at a time where technology is rapidly evolving and we can get devices that fit our individual needs.

It's a known issue that iOS11 refreshes apps more often than iOS10. There's also speculation that it may be an inherit fault of the A11 chip.

Having said that, loading apps is just one part of the experience. The A11 makes Face ID possible and video exports are crazy fast for a phone. Much faster than anything from a Snapdragon. Also the A11 can record 4K @ 60fps for an unlimited amount of time (I believe). The Galaxy S9 can record only up to 5 minutes before it overheats and stops recording.

I don't think people give the iPhone 8/X enough credit for being able to record 4k @ 60fps without limits.

Is this true of the S9 heating up and not being able to record more than 5 mins of 4K video at 60 FPS?

Samsung and others, don’t update often and Google doesn’t force a push, except on their own Pixels.

Let’s see how long it takes for Samsung to update this to the S9?

Let’s see how long it takes to develop a high end phone of quality with a better screen design that’s no so dated, then I’d consider a pixel.

I’m speechless.

All my homework when I was deciding I did not know this. Thank you for sharing.

Glad I made the right choice despite not knowing this. It would have been a no brainer for me. I couldn’t be happier now with my X because I want to be able to record my family events in 4K and be able to appreciate and enjoy the videos on my 4K monitor on my desk. Worth the extra money I paid vs S9+. I guess I just assumed everyone was able to do unlimited 4K video like Apple. Wow.

Surprising it stops at only 5 mins. Not a huge issue for me as I don’t record much video but still..

Who really cares. The camera in your pocket is all that matters. If I need insanely amazing photos, I use my Hasselblad X1D. Very few cameras on the planet that aren't Hasselblads can match the image quality that they produce. Buy whatever you want and enjoy it and steer past the clickbait. These articles aren't going to convince anyone to change from Samesong to Apple or vice versa.

Completely agree. Smart phones are so close in comparison with photo’s today, the average consumer likely can’t see the finite differences. But More importantly, the consumer is choosing what smart phone manufacturer they prefer (Apple or Samsung for example), they are not making their decision based on which camera is better. They are already using the camera without choice because of their choice with Android or iOS.

I prefer old Samsung TouchWiz, not sure why... but I do. The new IOS looks amazing. For that, my vote goes to the iPhone, because the software is just.... better looking.

I agree to most of OP's comments.
I've tried pretty much every flagship android phones out there before coming back to iphone X now. While some of them have great hardware, i don't seem to like android OS compared to iOS, even though android offers tons of options to customize

I wouldnt get a Samsung device even if it is for free - just cannot stand the android version - full of bloatware and after a few months it slows the phone down. My friends have note8 and S8 - was great when they bought it, Now they feel its slow and battery life sucks!!

Pixel - i loved it when i had the pixel 2 - but didnt like the looks, so traded it. Was a great device though.. Camera is much better than iphone X.
While i don't like Samsung, its the most successful android phone. I guess at the end of the day, its all subjected to one's preference.

Samsung is great device, which, unfortunately runs Android. And I broke all connections with Google months ago when I finally made an iCloud e-mail, and terminated all Gmail accounts. Nothing is ever gonna draw me to that company again. Nothing. So, when Samsung makes a phone with OS other than Google's, I will be very happy to try it.

So to make myself clear, if smartphones were more like x86 devices, where you have pretty broad choices for whatever OS you want, I would buy Samsung. It is a nice device, not gonna lie.

Good luck trying to cancel the iCloud or Apple ID because gmail makes it easy to cancel. Apple is a bit more difficult.

iPhone X has the best hardware of the 3.

Best processor of the three, but it isn't as cutting edge as the others. Samsung's S9 has MST tech for Samsung Pay (much more widely accepted than Apple Pay), offers a higher resolution screen, the Google Assistant renders Siri useless, Samsung offers a better camera than the others, Samsung has more RAM, it offers IP68 water resistance, there is no notch, Samsung offers fast wireless charging, you have a FP sensor at the back that works quicker than FaceID, Samsung offers native quick charge out of the box, a headphone jack, and there are other major reasons too.

Apple's 2018 hardware should be better than the X, but it won't be higher speced than the Galaxy in most categories. Apple loves obscure resolutions, takes awhile to update RAM quantity, and will make trivial changes for awhile. The next major redesign and significant upgrades will not happen for at least a couple more years.

Nope, you are wrong. My S8+ didn't slow down after a year. In fact after Oreo update performance as well as battery life have improved.

X is just ugly with the notch and camera bump. And at a pricey $1000 plus the phone iOS just cannot make it compared to S9 in terms of functionalities.

Only thing is I do not use the half of those features.

You don't even need a S9/S9+ to get most of the features Apple should've offered on the iPhone X: dark mode, themes, AOD, a headphone jack, QHD+ display, fast wireless charging, in box-supported fast charging w/ charger included, a FP sensor, etc.

You may not use that stuff, but a flagship smartphone should offer AOD, a headphone jack, an included fast charger, FP sensor, and fast wireless charging.

Second guessing Pixels any more at all as a choice if google stops support for all their phones in 3 years.

That means resale is going to be tremendously horrible if you can even sell it in a couple of years because it will become a paperweight.

https://gizmodo.com/google-appears-to-be-killing-off-the-pixel-and-pixel-xl-1825194921/amp

This is/was expected from Google. Remember, Apple is a smartphone anomaly. They're the only company that can be reasonably expected to support a device up to 5 years. Idk why I would want to saddle myself with the same device for 5 years and pay to repair/replace aging hardware with another like model. Some people are happy to pay $75 to have their 5S replaced. I would've given up on the 5S two years ago if I owned one.

As for the Pixel/Pixel XL OG, those phones are much more reasonably priced at the refurbished level since Google was selling them for too much. Apple can sell millions of 7s/7+s because people will still pay up for them because they can expect performance and support. Apple is trying to rectify their past throttling too.

Android file system and all computing devices, suffer from fragmentation. Which with constant app updates and system patching leads to poor performance. A clean install even by cloning your Mac can help. Apple FS is suppose to help address that to some extent. Even when using UFS 2.x

I’d have to give Pixel 2 a go except Google doesn’t warm me, maybe Essential. While Sammy has great specs have to agree it has problems with Galaxy Apps and updates.

Huawei may come the closest to what I like in non-iOS device.

Good for you. Wife has the S6 and S7 edge which was great initially and started slowing down. She was constantly charging it in the car or at home. Finally got fed up and moved to iPhone. But now she got the s9+ despite my warning. But loves Samsung camera

I hope you’re right. But personally I just can’t stand their bloated OS. pixel is a great phone. But I just wasn’t satisfied with android. If I go back it will be if Microsoft comes up with the rumoured surface phone. I loved the W10 phones.
