Nobody is talking about the larger sensor pixel size in the Xs - that's what grabbed me. The X has 1.1 micrometer pixels, those on the Xs are 1.4 micrometers. Coming from Android I recognised the improvement in image quality when the Nexus 5x had 1.5 micrometer pixels. The current Pixel 2 has 1.4 micrometer pixels too. The increased pixel size means that the sensor is able to gather more light and, in theory, should improve low-light images and go some way to counter distortion and noise at higher ISO levels.

Needs to be upvoted.

Most people don’t seem to understand the sensor has been improved.

i really can't see the point of upgrading from an X. Same display, same camera. Ok the chip is faster, but unless face ID turns out to be significantly quicker i really don't see the point.
The camera isn't the same. It uses a new sensor entirely.

I’ve a feeling in everyday use no one will tell the difference! Just feel poorer if you got the XS. It remains to be seen if Face ID is improved, but with iOS 12 allowing more then one Face I think it could help solve any issues with it.

From what I’ve read the second camera is exactly the same and he main camera is ‘improved’. The main difference is this smart HDR.
See above.

My One Plus Six has a camera with a pixel size of 1.22 micrometers. But I am not sure how much difference I’ve noticed with my X but I can’t say I’ve taken as many photos with it.

For the first time in my long history of iPhones I’m struggling for a reason to upgrade.

I do not blame you at all. I am in the same boat with my X. I was set on upgrading, selling my phone for $700 and just paying the difference. Why should I pay $300-400 (including tax) for what is pretty much the same phone with minor spec bumps. I rather take that money and put it towards an AW4 or just leave the money in the bank.

I guess I will wait until real reviews come in, and see if it is really worth it.

I picked up the 5, 5S, 6, 6S, 7, and X at launch.

A little obsssed but for the first time, I didn't preorder the latest version. I was way more into "power using" a phone in my younger days, but now I just use text, email software, and some social media apps. I can't find a good reason to upgrade this time around, which is shocking for me since I was all on board 3D Touch for 6S, and 7+'s dual camera.

I also didn't want to go back to a large iPhone (nor very large hands). The X/XS fit my hands just fine. Hmmm

The difference in light sensitivity between 1.1 and 1.4 should be in the region of 75%. The problem with the X is the slow shutter speeds it chooses in low light situations (same situation Pixel chose 1/24 sec and the iPhone X 1/4 sec). Although OIS can eliminate camera shake it can do nothing about a moving subject. I'm really hoping the Xs can use the increased sensor sensitivity and pixel size to utilise a higher shutter speed combined with higher ISO because noise will be reduced. It remains to be seen what Apple's exposure algorithms will come up with but I'm hopeful.

Thanks OP.

These are real and desirable improvements. I’m glad Apple is focusing on things that matter and not just gimmicks.

Faster storage controller in the XS too. Should make opening/scrubbing big files or movies faster.

But if that’s a conscious choice by Apple even with a different sensor in the XS is there any reason to believe they will make much of a different decision with the new phone?

Indeed. To be fair, my Samsung Galaxy S9 always chooses a long shutter speed in low light - and there is no excuse given the phone has an f1.5 aperture!
