I have the same problem. Press the power button, nothing happens. Wait a few seconds and press it again, Apple Pay pops up! Arrgghh

Anyway. Lock the phone again and press the power button and it works. Tap to wake always works fine for me. I guess I use the power button as it muscle memory from the previous phones I have had.

Alright, so we can make the conclusion then that it has something to do with the phone waiting for Apple Pay instead of waking like normal?

Also, must be software since it doesn't malfunction when locking it...

If it is indeed a software issue, how come a clean install and restoring the iPhone x did not help?
It’s just weird

Just because it doesn't go away from a full reset doesn't mean that its not a bug in the initial software, which I am thinking that it is!
Well, I have made a full reset and reinstalled the latest iOS which didn’t fix the issue.
Can you please explain how can there be a bug in the initial software and on some others phones the bug won’t exist?
Just curious

Just like some users will experience bugs, others won't. Hence why it its hard for developers and companies to track down all bugs and have completely bug free software for all users. There will always be small bugs here and there...

The only reason I think that this is a software bug is that the screen sometimes doesn't respond to the first tap, just like the side button doesn't respond the first click. Would find it difficult to believe both the screen and button are malfunctioning...

I can also say that sometimes tapping once brings up Apple Pay. I know my button isn’t sticking.

Before I shut off raise to wake, Apple Pay use to always be active in my pocket. I would take my phone out and maybe 2 out of 10 times the Apple Pay screen was on.

Having the same issue, the phone stays locked and the screen does not turn on on a single press of the side button. Sometime it’ll show up and then lock again or become completely unresponsive (tap to wake doesn’t wake the screen during this time)

I’ll have to wait around 30s to 1 min for the phone to become responsive again. Hope Apple issues a software fix asap.

Seems like it discusses the very thing you are talking about and those experiencing it traced it to the feature that allows Apple Pay activation when the side button is pressed twice.

It does not. The link discusses delay in putting phone to sleep. He’s talking about waking phone up. I have the same problem. Sometimes first click does not wake phone up. I disabled Apple Pay as it was turning on on the 2nd click. I could wait for 10s and the second click would wake the phone up and also turn on the Apple Pay feature on. I had to turn Apple Pay off. The problem still exists and I have the latest update.

I am starting to think it’s hardware related. Any chance for that?

Not too sure. Does not appear hardware related. I had a different iPhone X before this one and it had a same problem. I’m sure it’s something to do the OS

Did you return your device because of something else?

But it can be resolve by ios update?

???
My old x had a defective screen but it also had the power button wake issue. I returned it. I got a new x and this one still has the power button wake issue. Hope that clarifies that.

For me it seem that the latest ios update "11.2.1" make the problem worse ... i can see that the power button issue become more noticeble

Yes, yes, so glad I found this thread!! I have the same things guys!! I’ve had 2 iPhone X’s and, both exhibited this ... sometimes the side button does not wake the screen; second click does. Seems to happen when off and laying flat?

Sometimes the screen will turn on/off really quick on the second click. Never happens when screen is already on, using side button to sleep. I am on 11.2 beta 5.

Based on the 2 of mine and some of you all, I’m assuming it’s an iOS bug
Is your x still have the same issue?

I'm getting similar issue when trying to activate my iPhone X 64GB purchasing from T-Mobile for the first time. I'm too excited to get my hand dirty with my shiny iPhone X, bad luck that the unresponsive touch issue occurs when iPhone X requires to swipe up to unlock my iPhone. No input is accept and I'm so upsetting. I have to go to App Store tomorrow to get this fixed :-(
