Hey all,

Since I'm new to the whole wireless charging thing I'm a bit behind. I got the iOttie Qi car mount (my third of these mounts, definitely my favorite mounts, just with Qi this time). However, I'm running GPS apps like google maps and it only seems to maintain the charge, never increase it, or if it does, it's like 1% over about thirty minutes of uninterrupted charging. It's better than my battery draining, but still not ideal. I've been a bit confused on just how much wattage a X can receive and if a "fast" Qi charger like this would help or not. I originally got the older model because the new one wasn't in stock and the old one was $10 cheaper, but I'm wondering if I should exchange.

Is the charging significantly better with a wired connection in the car? Because when I charge through USB on my car, it’s always just canceled out the effect of using GPS, since it’s trickle charging.

I have an Anker high wattage 4 port usb car plug so it doesn’t have a problem charging on that.

Yes, navigating while using GPS is pretty battery intensive.
And with the wireless charging being slower than plugging in then it will barely keep up with the energy usage and maybe just maintain.

The fast charger won’t help yet! Right now it can only take in 5w. Apple will allow 7.5w at a later date. So you will need the fast one in the future.

I read a post about Qi charging and GPS usage and this seems to be par for the course on mobile devices unless it uses the higher power Qi pads. I don’t think that the iphones support that yet though.

You need to wait for an iOS update that enables fast induction charging. Might need an Apple brand charger too.

Thanks. Looks like I will need to switch out now while I can.

I like the iOttie mounts a lot. My new Qi version will arrive tomorrow so I will let you know if I have any issues with it, but I doubt I will. The mounts do work on windshields as well, I use an old version mounted On the windshield when I’m in a rental for work.

thanks! now that my x has wireless charging and my wife got me a note8 as well i want to go to wireless charging in my car so i dont have to worry about cords. please let me know if you have any issues and thanks for the info about using it on windshields.

A lot of people have really low amperage USB lighter/utility adapters in their cars. USB voltage is 5 volts, so a 1 amp USB port is only going to get you 5 watts of charging (the same as a standard Qi charger).

If you're using your iPhone for GPS as well as music it's likely 5watts may just hold your charge where it is (if that).

btw...everyone looking to go wireless - do all of your hands free controls work when you're using bluetooth rather than USB/lightning?
(need to keep that in mind).

Everyone should be ensuring that all of the USB ports in their cars are at least 2A - lots of 2.4A options up on Amazon as well.

They'll do a better job of powering your Qi chargers in your car as well - especially the 7.5 watt fast chargers.

Wireless charging will NOT provide enough power to both run GPS AND charge your phone significantly. Had same issue on old Android phones.

Do youself a favor and look into “USB-PD” cigarette lighter adapters, and get a USB-C to lightning cable. The better of these units can deliver the same power profile as the 29W fast charger from Apple. You’ll be able to navigate AND fast charge your phone.

Do you have any "USB-PD" and USB-C to lightning cable that you recommend?

The wireless charger will only provide 5w of power, which is probably just enough for Google Maps to run.

If you want fast charging, you should buy USB-C car chargers like the one from Belkin, which, together with Apple’s Lightning to USB-C cable, provides 18w or more power.

You're going to have to accept that this wouldn't be an issue on any other phone on the market, other than the iPhone. Primitive wireless charging capabilities.

Agreed my S7 edge worked perfectly with wireless charging. I would still be using it if I wasn't stationed overseas.

I got a dedicated Garmin GPS on Black Friday. It’s so much better than using phone. Also save a lot of my data

What model did you get? I have always used Google Maps and I am satisfied with it but I am looking at other options as well.

I bought the Garmin SmartDrive 60 LMT.
LMT = Life time map updates and traffic updates.

The traffic updates on Google Map is way better for avoiding congestion. But I figure it’s better I use this then to pay for over using my phone data every month lol.

I got it at Best Buy for CAD189. Maybe you can try it and if you don’t like it then return it. And it might be even cheaper on Boxing Day.

You could have got an navigation app that doesnt use carrier data.
There's many that you can download the maps of the states you need on wifi and stores them on the device. No carrier data needed at all.
Individual navigation units seem like a thing of that past ;)

That and Google Maps lets you download MASSIVE sections of offline map data if you want. I have most of northern LA downloaded (300+mb) and my home town (high desert) - 70mb.

But yeah, can't beat Waze for getting around traffic, knowing where cops are hiding, and potential problems ahead.

I like the 6 inch screen on the GPS more and I tried using it on google map. I think you can only download a certain section of the map. Also, I have the same problem as op which is my phone only maintain charge while on GPS. Plus, I don’t need to take my phone out from my pocket whenever I wanna use GPS. ‘Cause usually when I leave the car and take the phone with me, that’s the time I drop my phone LOL

I use the Navigon App and I downloaded about 4-5 states maps that I use the most. Works great.
I had a few Garmin standalone navigation car units but havent used them for years and dont really know where I stored them last.
Plugging them in and out each time and hiding them so people wont smash my windows to steal them when parked was not fun and they took a while to lock in satellite signal and had to keep them plugged in to the outlet to charge while driving.
I dont miss those days :D
