Three clicks on the power button and you get a home button. I don’t miss the fingerprint reader. When I first got the iPhone X, I was accidentally taking screenshots.

Couldn't care less about fingerprint sensor. It had it's time and now it's time for a better technology.

I very close to getting a 8 Plus instead of the XS Max because I wanted to keep Touch ID. I would have regretted it big time.
I wasn’t sold in Face ID last year. I hadn’t even seen Face ID in action in person till a friend showed me her X a few weeks ago and I was sold.

Not looking to start another “I miss the home button” thread. I am looking for opinions from those who’ve lived with the iPhone X (and now the XS).

One of the things that has kept me from upgrading is that I am a frequent “bedside phone reacher/user”. In other words, I’ve become accustomed to checking my emails and messages in the wee hours by using Touch ID, glancing at my phone to see if I need to read anything, then rolling over and back to sleep. This is something I’ve had to do over the years as I have many clients on the east coast and I’m in the west.

Can anyone who is/was a similar user tell me if you were able to successfully adjust to the X? Did anyone, who has similar habits to mine, find it to be a deal breaker?

Very interested in comments regarding using the X in this fashion, often in the dark.

Any comments regarding adjusting after moving to the X welcome.

Face ID is great in the Winter and you are wearing gloves

One more idea for you:

I got a pedestal type wireless charger for my nightstand. My phone sits on it. If I want to see notifications, I just touch the screen. If I want to unlock it, I usually just lift my head a bit. I don't usually even have to manipulate the phone other than "waking" it by touching the screen.

Same here. It stays on long enough for me to at least look at the name on the email. If I need to go further and actually open and read or respond, it's no problem to just lift my head and look at it. My customers that would email at that time of night, east or west, know that I'm probably asleep and will respond first thing in the am. (my am).

Better is subjective and is more of a personal
Preference. Is Face ID more secure? Yes. Is face ID operable where touch ID failed, yes. But touch ID also worked in situations for Face ID did not. So the term ‘better’ is it completely variable term, although I do believe that face ID is Apple’s choice of biometric security because of the security protocols that follows and it’s enhancements, just because it’s ‘better’.

Face ID is great, and quite a bit improved on the XS/Max, but it is still not perfect. I expect that we will have a Face ID 2.0 some time in the future. Everything has its pros and cons, Face ID is very very good when I have a wet hand, and how many times I wish my iPad has it. Reaching my thumb up to the fingerprint sensor feels very awkward when my iPad is on the Smart Keyboard stand. On the other hand, using Face ID at night on the bed is less convenient than Touch ID, I often just go ahead to type the passcode to save the hassle. Also, when I feel sick and wear a face mask, I feel like a disabled person when I unlock the phone.

All in all, except for the in-bed situation (and that *knock on wood* I don't feel sick often), I love Face ID on all other occasions. In normal situations where you use the phone, the phone just authentic itself when you hold it. It's quite a pleasant experience.

Perhaps I should play with my phone less during the night. May give me a better sleep too.

Only time I miss touch id is when the phone is sitting on my desk and I want to unlock it without picking it up. Kinda have to lean my head over the phone to unlock it or wait for the pass-code option..Kind of annoying but other than that I enjoy face id.

Just the feedback I’m looking for. Glad to hear it works in total darkness. I know I’d have to learn and adjust, I’m just hoping that that adjustment will be enough to, eventually, get over the fingerprint reader loss.

I’ve also considered turning it off completely on occasion.
Not only does it work in the dark, it usually still works even when I’m laying on my side with half of my face buried into the pillow.

In bed is the one scenario that I have issues with Face ID. My wife works PMs so I'm usually asleep before she gets home and she can't always respond to texts immediately. If I send a good night text and don't get an immediate response, the phone gets docked and the lights go out. If I get a text (or any other notification), with the angle of the dock I have to either enter my passcode or take the phone off to see the notification, which is less than desirable.

All that said it's still better than TouchID in every way, IMO.

this has been my experience as well, and when it fails in the middle of the night it really becomes irritating.

Me as well. I usually check early in the morning and probably 70-80% of the time it does not recognize me. This is a well-known issue with FaceID. It does not work well in bed for a lot of people. Having said that, I would try to adjust your habits OP. What you are doing is not healthy. I would look for ways to adjust your schedule or something so that you are not waking up through the night.

With the speed improvements to FaceID in the XS line, I think it is now safe to say that FaceID is objectively better than TouchID at this point. Both have a few situations where they are unreliable and work seamlessly otherwise, but FaceID is now more invisible with the speed improvements. Couple that with TouchIDs tendency to have a bad day, and I doubt there are more than a small few that has used FaceID regularly that would go back to TouchID.

I’ll be the first to admit that the failures rates have gone down a lot lately. Either I’ve changed my habit or that neural Engine is really learning more about my face.

In my experience with Face ID. The times that it has failed was when I picked the phone up with not the intention to unlock it at that exact moment but it attempts to. I have attention aware activated.
But swiping up to invoke Face ID is a good feature and for me works every time.
