That’s probably true, I would venture an edge to edge SE retaining a 4 inch form factor would be absolutely stellar by most standards for an update, but that’s probably not a reality. I’m not sure if you saw the earlier rumor today about the 4.7 inch iPhone starting at $599 to debut in March 2020, kind of interesting:

Yeah that looks like it could be a great phone, but I do think it is priced high. It should be $559 using that form factor, especially since it would be essentially a 6 year old form (iPhone 6 - 2014) and at least 3 years old iPhone 8 - 2017. I still don’t see why they can’t make a 5.2” XR shrink. It would a great replacement for the SE and they could easily charge $599 for it. Even using the A12 and current XR/XS cameras.

I'm really hoping the SE form factor returns! Since the day the iPhone 6 arrived in stores and I bought a 5s, after playing with the 6 and realising it is too big :(

If you’re referring to the four-inch form factor returning, it won’t be. I think it’s clear that specific size is not a reality anymore, and it either will be a 4.7/4.8 size display. Even though it’s not what it once was, I still give Apple credit for possibly offering a phone in 2020 that no other manufacture seems to want to offer today.

From what I’ve read the physical size of the bezels on the XR are as small as they could go with the current LCD technology. If a smaller phone is made using the same tech then the bezels are going to look really huge in comparison to the unstable screen area. This might be one reason why the XR is the size it is. If the phone is much smaller in size then the bezels will start to look silly. And as it is there are plenty of people out there who have moaned about the “huge” bezels on the XR.

Of course the alternative is OLED, but that would push the price up and I don’t see it happening if/until the XR goes OLED.

Those are all good points.

Why does anyone care about wireless charging? For me it is one the most pointless additions the iphone has ever had; the wireless charger has to be plugged in, right? So how is it beneficial to have a 'wireless' charger plugged in to a particular socket over a normal charger? The time saved placing the phone on the charger as opposed to plugging it in the bottom must be negligible, if any at all.

I guess speed is the only benefit, assuming it is faster.

I’d be surprised if an ‘XE’ phone was OLED as that will push the price up.

An iPhone ending with ‘E’ strongly signifies that it’s a) smaller b) cheaper.

So it must be lcd that’s being used (if this is real).

Presumably the next gen of the Liquid Retina display decreases the bezels, which would make a smaller form factor more likely (as someone else on this thread pointed out, the bezels on the XR would look very outsized on a smaller phone).

Speed is not really a main benefit. I think your logic is a bit skewed, there are those who do see the advantages. And one of the main advantages you’re paying for wireless charging is convenience, that’s literally what it is. The user paid for the convenience of setting your phone down in the dark on a charging dock without having to search for the wire, the user pays for the convenience of having a wireless charging pad in their car where they can set your phone down without having to use a wire, etc. Wireless charging is an option, for those who see the benefit in this option, it merely makes it that much easier for them to want to charge their phone.

For the record, there are some members in here who don’t even use wires to charge their phone anymore, they simply use wireless charging.

Would happily buy a new iPhone not exceeding a physical size of 7 and 8. XR is too big and heavy for me, XS - way too expensive.

No, the wireless charging is slower than wired, so it is, indeed, just a gimmick.

The XR bezels are not bigger than those of iPhone 7 and 8, so any reduction at the top/bottom would still be a step forward.

For some people wireless charging is s gimmick. But then my mother in-law believes that all smartphones are gimmicks. I like the convenience of wireless charging so for me it’s not a gimmick.

The bezels on the XR are thinner at the top and bottom than those on the iPhone 7 & 8.

For whatever reason Apple want the X series of iPhone to have symmetrical bezels. Otherwise on the XR just make the bezels on the left/right thinner. It’s pretty obvious.

That’s exactly it, you’re paying for the convenience. It’s an option, not mandatory to use if someone doesn’t want wireless charging, but it is there for those who see the advantage.

RP hit the nail on the head with the in-car wireless charging example. I’m otherwise in the “wireless charging is a gimmick” camp because I wouldn’t buy a charging pad for home use but I would set my XS on a car’s charging pad to get a quick boost if given the option, especially if it could also enable wireless CarPlay.

I assumed a 4.7 inch screen would fit in an SE sized phone if the screen was more edge to edge...?
I don't have issue with a bigger screen. I just prefer a phone the size of the SE in my pocket/hand..

Folk cleverer than I on these forums have worked out the likely dimensions of an XE based on the probable point size of the screen.

They say it’s likely to be between an SE and a 6-8 - but a little taller than the 6-8. Think of a scaled down XR.

I have a standup wireless charger for my phone by my bed. Convenient, except for those nights I don't have it centered right or the cat moves the phone and it isn't charged the next day.

That’s why I would’ve preferred something like the Airpower if it had released, where you can set the device anywhere on a charging pad flat, and you don’t have to worry about centering the phone on a contact point for it to charge properly.

Most probably it will be iPhone 9, not iPhone XE. We'll see in March 2020 if Apple introduces such a phone.

Releasing something like this would make a lot of sense, know of many people that still enjoy their iPhone SE but starting to feel that the performance is slowing down.
Exactly between slowness and something not easily reparable for a reasonable cost, the SE users will have no equivalent with Apple and flee to another ecosystem.
