This has been my problem since I got my first iPhone 7 years ago. I ordered a folio case yesterday and hope this helps. Turning off tap to wake makes using the phone awkward (at least for me) I hope the folio case solves my problem. It is embarrassing.
I got my folio case and I twice when I hang up with someone it immediately starts calling someone before I can actually close it. My sister said check your most recent calls. Nope, that wasn't it. I know it has to be something I am doing, but I can't figure it out. I thought it was in my favorites, but I facetimed someone that I never call so that was a big surprise to me.

I’ve had my folio case for about a week now. While it seems to have eliminated the butt dial problems, there are still other mysteries I can’t solve. I’m always very careful about locking the screen and closing the folio case before putting the phone in my pocket. But, sometimes when I take the phone out of my pocket and open the case I’m astounded to see that the screen is on and unlocked. How can the phone unlock itself when the screen is covered like that? It has to be either Face ID or a six digit passcode. How can that happen in my pocket with the screen covered by the folio case?

We are not alone. Tonight on Colbert's Cyborgasm segment, Stephen said:

I’m so proficient with my iPhone that I can make phone calls just with my butt. I don’t even know how it happens. How does it unlock? Is there really that little difference between my butt and my face?

And, yes, my phone still unlocks itself in my pocket despite the folio cover.
