I did that exact thing. Spent a lot of time st the apple store evaluating the xr vs the Xs vs the max. I bought a 256gb max.
Compared to the iPhone 7 in the house the max screen is noticeably better to my eyes. And I probably would notice a difference with the xr also.
First thing OP, when you're saying Zoom are you referring to 3DTouch? When you say you have to manually hit the screen on the XR are you referring to 3DTouch again? Just curious because the Xʀ does have tap to wake just like any X model iPhone. I’m just confuse to what you’re referring too exactly.
With that said, I have sitting with me in my possession the iPhone X, iPhone XS Max and iPhone X. Have had the X since launch last year and Max since launch this year. Also the Xʀ since it’s launch on October 26th. I was seriously trying to wait for the Xʀ before even attempting to get the Max, but like always launch day I had to have the Max.
That said personally I’ve been using the Xʀ everyday since it’s launch day. I thought the Max was my favorite iPhone until I got this one. For me 6.1” is a perfect size so the feel in hand is great.
Deciding main factor for me was battery life.
Without knowing what you are looking for in a phone, OP, it's very hard to answer this.
I would go into a store and try them all out (if you haven't already).
The XR has the most affordable price point out of the 3, the best battery life on any iPhone, and it has the
same processor and single camera lens as the XS and XS Max. A poll will not answer your question.
The XR display caps out at an 828p resolution, it's LCD, same screen clarity/sharpness/PPI as the iP4-8 (non Plus models), but has updated color calibration or "Liquid Retina".
iP67 on the XR vs iP68 water ratings on the more expensive models. The water rating difference might not mean anything to you. This lacks the HDR or Dolby Vision display support of it's higher priced siblings, no telephoto lens, 1 GB less of RAM but it's pushing less pixels, also 2x the bezel thickness of the others wrapping around the screen. Aluminum sides vs the steel on the XS/XS Max.
The XS is the lightest of the 3 (XS Max is the heaviest), but the XS also has the shortest battery life and the smallest screen size out of the options. Other than that, there aren't any compromises with the XS. Only the XS and XS Max have OLED screens, full HD resolution, a telephoto lens, 4 GB of RAM, and identical screen sharpness.
If you're coming from a Plus and like the bigger screen width, then I think the XR or the XS Max may be your best options. If you like a compact phone and the lightest form factor, the XS might be your best choice.
Do you notice the speakers being louder on the Max or the XR or about the same?
I had the iPhone X before and tried the XR I noticed the zoom feature is different due to it not having the second lens.
I loved that the X has the zoom circle to adjust easily where as the XR you have to tap then slide it.
Also does anyone think the material of the XR is cheap? I kept thinking about when they had the 5C was it that was plastic?
Also anyone that has an XR do you notice any antenna issues?
Chart the Pros and Cons of each along with the price of each and make the call if the cost is worth it to you.
I just bought an Xr, but the Xs Max was on my list also. I could have bought either one so it was not cost thing for me, but more of a return on investment for what you get.
For me the two things I was stuck on was the Xr's lack of 3d touch and the 2x optical camera lens. I used both of these a lot. I needed at least 128 gb of storage so that put the cost of the two phones about 450.00 apart if I got the 128 GB Xr vs the 256 GB Xs Max. I played with both in the store and could not justify the difference in cost with these being my only two hangups.
There has been some chatter on the Xs phones having signal issues with Verizon so that was another concern I had the with XS Max that pushed me closer to the Xr.
With all of that said I absolutely love the Xr. I had a 7+ before and the Xr is getting better reception in 2 problem areas I have near me. It has yet to drop a call in these areas we have had problems at for years. The 3d touch is a non-issue and the camera seems to be as good or better than the 7+ even using the 2x digital zoom for me.
I know the Xr is their compromise (Value) model, but it does not feel like it in real world use. I would certainly buy it again.
That was my concern resell value I get a new iPhone every year I was wondering if the max and have a better resale value or the XR?
It is hard to say for sure. You can go to Swappa and look at current hits each are taking. I think the Xs models are taking a larger hit on resell from MSRP than the XR currently. The Xs will sell for more money but I am going to dare say you will loose more money on the Xs line vs what you paid than you will on the Xr. That is just a guess and my opinion.
I like to upgrade every year too, but I am going to keep it for at least 2 years most likely longer I like it that much. When my wife's renewal comes up I am going to get her an Xr also.
Yes, I like the max.So you think the max was worth it?
Thank you! In your opinion does the coral look more pink or orange?
So the Max is just an extra waste of money?
Yes, the Max is "just an extra waste of money".
The XR is simply a waste of money.
Owned both the Max and sold it to get the XR. it’s a better phone. Better battery, smaller size, same amount of info.
Coming from an X to a X Max to a XR - people note the black blacks of an OLED screen.
And yes the OLED screens have better blacks. But if you actually do work on your phone. How important is black super black vs black. Compared the battery life, I made that trade off.

Does it feel heavy or to big to fit ina pocket?
I am a women and still like my phone in my pxoket.
The camera was my biggest hold out. I am still testing it out, but so far I think the Xr camera is better than 7+ overall in the scenarios I have tested it in. I mainly use my phone for snapshots, but tested out the portrait mode with my son and it did a good job.I have the 7+ and am looking at the XR. What do you think about the camera?
I took this with the max. Was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. The camera was my biggest hold out. Here are a couple pictures. The one of the fish was in near darkness, the arctic fox was using the digital zoom, and the flower was not zoomed
If they are both a waste of money what phone do you have then?
I got a Red XR and never had a better smartphone before. Spending extra money was not an issue but XS Max size was too much for me. This size, instead, is all in all manageable and I can use it with one hand quite comfortably (by using reachability). Battery life is amazing, screen is fair enough for my old eyes, gaming is excellent, and Red looks stunning. I only miss 2x optical Zoom on photos (awaiting availability of Olloclip Filmer's kit in my country).
