I moved over from an iPhone 6s, and after having some difficulties, I put it my old SIM card. I wasn’t sure which sim I should have in there, so I ended up swapping them back and forth a few times (Stupid idea, I know.) Anyway, I’m noticing in my Settings>General, it’s now listing two SIMS. I’m not sure what happened, if I put the sim on the backside of the tray one time, but I’m just concerned this will cause issues going forward.

Are you in Canada? I am and the guy at the apple store told me we have double sim tray because only one carrier has e sim in my area

Hmmm, maybe not. I thought that’s how it worked with the dual sim. Seems I can only put one in. Which is even stranger that it’s listing two SIM cards.

I’m Vancouver, but I just tried it and I don’t see how 2 sims can fit. Can you take a photo of your sim tray? I’m going back to ask them because I really want to use the 2 sim feature and Telus doesn’t have e sim

Is it strange that I have to sim numbers listed under settings, or is this normal?

We all have that. One of those is the built in esim.

You are all overthinking this. Some of these threads on this board are hilarious.

Not overthinking it, I have been using dual sim phones for years, but most NA people aren’t used to it

They should have just put a dual sim tray instead of e sim which isn’t even available in many countries yet

Can anyone in Canada that has a dual-sim tray XS Max please take a photo of the tray? I am really interested in whether the US devices might physically have the second set of SIM contacts and the only difference is the SIM tray and software... Thanks.

All US/Canada phones will see 2 SIMs in settings, even on iOS 12.

In Settings > About, you will see "Primary" and "Second SIM". Right now, everyone's Second SIM is the eSIM. It should only have an IMEI number on it.

The additional info on the second eSIM in iOS 12.1 is found on the Mobile Data screen but you need a QR to activate the eSIM.

Does anyone know when the eSim will be usable?

I see value in dual-SIM support, and would upgrade from the X if I could use the dual SIM. Right now I have an ATT phone and a TMobile phone with unlimited global roaming which i largely use outside the US. Since the TMO line is corporate, I would ideally keep that on a sim card, and provision my personal ATT line to the eSIM.

When can I do this? I'm holding off on XS purchase till it is possible.

Nobody knows when it will be turned on.

Apple claims this Fall. iOS 12.1 beta 1 seems to have support, and we know that the carriers have supported eSIM for a while (e.g. Apple Watch). I think that we can probably safely say 2018 launch. On the pessimist side, Apple has had a lousy track record with release dates lately. But this one needs the carriers to play nicely.

No point holding a purchase for this unless you're using a dual SIM phone right now. May as well get fully set up and moved into your new phone. There's plenty of good to be had before 12.1 hits.

Thanks for the info. Normally I would agree on not holding the purchase, but I already have an X with AppleCare pre-paid, so I don't have an urgency to switch devices unless I get compelling new functionality. To me the dual sim is that, but the other stuff seems incremental to me (unless you can convince me otherwise...)

I just hate moving between devices... even with restores being as good as they are, I still lose a good 2-3 days every time I swap devices. By Monday my XS Max will be just another phone, but these last few days have been consumed by the restore, logging into apps, grabbing updates, and locating those mysterious settings that somehow don't carry over sometimes. Then there's that first backup into iCloud once you're fully set up.

Definitely not going to try to convince anyone here in an "S" year. :) The only improvement everyone enjoys every year is better cameras, but I totally get riding out your AppleCare.
