iPhone XS iPhone XS Stereo Speakers not working

So I’m 4 days in with my brand new iPhone XS and I’ve noticed that the stereo speakers aren’t working. The usual speaker, next to the lightning connector, works fine but the earpiece speaker seems to not work at all.

Has anybody else noticed this issue?

I set my phone up as new, as I do with all my new phones, so I can (I suppose?) rule out this being a software issue. I will be visiting my local Genius Bar over the next couple of days.

Yes same here! A hard reset seems like a temporary fix, but of course the problem persists

When I noticed it not working with my X I just restarted and it was back to normal. Seems to be ok on my Max.

I have a Genius Bar appointment scheduled this coming Tuesday so will update with anything they may find/suggest.

I have a similar situation with the XS. The top speaker works but it's not nearly as loud as the bottom one. My first X had the issue where it didn't work at all but the replacements have all been fine and currently has louder output from the top speaker than my XS does. I'm going to wait for them to attempt to address it in an iOS update, I have been dealing with defunct units with Apple for the past year and feel like they deserve a break from me.

I went to apple.com and had a chat with someone in support about the issue and they said there was no speaker in the upper ear piece.

Can someone confirm that they have sound coming from upper speaker when playing music/podcast

Should of told them to watch the keynote.

Shouldn't have to confirm an Apple advertised feature since the iPhone 7.

I had the same issue!! The ear speaker on my iPhone XS 256gig wasn’t working.... By turning the iPhone off and on again solved the problem! I know it’s hard to believed right? But now the sound is awesome!

I have the same issue here. The upper speaker not working, I have to turn off/on the device to make it work again, but it fails again after a couple days.
Is it a software bug or is it an individual fail?

No I have not found a fix

I just noticed this issue today.. Seems like it must be a software issue if restarting resolves it temporarily. I'd hate to bring it in and get another with the same issue..

I don’t think you’re experiencing the same issues as other posters. The two speakers on the iPhone aren’t the same, and work more like a bass and tweeter speaker combo than true stereo speakers (at least from my experiments). Try downloading a frequency generator app (I use one called Tone Gen) to check the top speaker. The top speaker is louder at frequencies above 1 kHz while the bottom speaker is louder at frequencies below this. They should be about the same volume at 1 kHz
