I do think that most of the XYZ photography (sunset, creek & river, mountain, etc.) posted by a different poster belong in the Picture Gallery thread. I also think that most people new to the Digital Photography forum don't know there are a set of guidelines already laid out for how the forum is supposed to work, so I don't say that with any malice. We should perhaps have a mod move those threads to the Picture Gallery to keep the main forum organized.I’m curious how members feel about this thread. In a technical sense, it isn’t consistent with the posting guidelines for this sub forum:

Guidelines for posting in the Digital Photography section
Through the years, we've seen how users in this sub-forum have cooperated to establish good, informal guidelines for how posts and threads are organized. We'd like to formalize those guidelines here now. The purpose of this post is therefore not to create new and unnecessary rules, but rather to...forums.macrumors.com
The POTD thread is the place to post/share images.
On the other hand, I can appreciate a desire to post images that highlight what can be done with Apple gear—putting everyone on an equal footing regarding the gear used to create the images shared in the thread.
Curious how other members feel about this. On the one hand, the POTD thread is a nice central place where people can post daily and members can see other people’s work. Does it make sense to have a thread dedicated to iPhone/iPad pics? Does this detract from the POTD thread? Will we subsequently see threads dedicated to Nikon pics? Canon pics? Sony pics? Leica pics? Etc.
Is this thread a helpful/useful direction for the sub forum? Can there be a thread limited to iPhone/iPad pics without spawning threads for every other brand of camera? Is there a good reason iPhone/iPad photos deserve their own thread as opposed to being folded into the POTD thread?
Honest questions for the forum members…. I’m not sure how I personally feel about this. Curious to hear how other members feel.
I agree. To be fair to this OP, they're not the same poster with the random relatively low-traffic "themes" (mountains, beaches, etc) that should be moved. Since the other poster isn't vaguely interested in the community at large, ignores most things that people say and ignores requests to use POTD, it may be a constant battle to move new ones.I do think that most of the XYZ photography (sunset, creek & river, mountain, etc.) posted by a different poster belong in the Picture Gallery thread. That said, for iPhoneography, specifically....well I do think it might deserve its own thread (although I definitely like the one photo per person per day limit). Shooting with an iPhone is very different than using a traditional camera and I think it stands as its own genre. Some people make magic with their phone cameras; I am not one of them, but I do think it can be a good skill to learn and hone if you go places without a real camera. And the computational factor is something we don't deal with in traditional photography and we are really just at the beginning stages of it. It is interesting to me to see the kinds of images that a skilled iPhoneographer can make.
Yes, there might be some overlap with this and the regular POTD thread, but for those of us in particular who do not often use their phone, I think this is a handy thread. I almost never post a phone photo in the POTD thread (I can literally think of one photo that I know was with my phone last fall), but I might be inclined to put a few in here. I just really don't use my phone camera much other than for snapshots of appointments or receipts, etc. I don't use it for pretty photos, and I really should try more often.
So personally I'm okay if this one stays and then recategorize the others that are more themed. I would categorize iPhoneography as a technique.
Because guidelines for the entire Digital Photography forum were set up on 2019 as described in the thread linked by kallisti above. Why do we really need guidelines? Can’t this thread just be a fun place to post pictures that were taken with our iPhones without worrying about anything else?

And also, there are already dedicated threads for specific iPhone models and picture shares from those cameras. There is no need to be redundant with threads in multiple forums across MR.
But, as we are are figuring this out, using an iPhone and discussing the techniques used with it to capture high quality images can be a worthwhile conversation. For instance, I would have zero idea how to take a Milky Way shot like the one you posted with my phone. That is worthy of a technique discussion.
As we have many users of many different skill sets, the goal of the Digital Photography forum is to share expertise and knowledge, rather than just random snapshots. We welcome beginners if their goal is to get better and learn the craft, regardless of the gear they use, but recently people have joined this forum with little desire to actually learn anything about photography. The fear is that with an iPhoneography dedicated thread, the DP forum will continue to devolve. Many of us here are very serious about our craft (as I imagine you are with the image you posted).

Which iPhone was this taken on please? I may seem daft because I am an untraveled island inhabitant but did the sky really look like that in person/with the naked eye?
ohhhh....so it's a sky replacement??Hey thanks for the kind words! This one was taken with the iPhone 12 Pro and then I edited the sky using Luminar AI. I was having a little fun with editing and thought this looked cool. Wish the sky looked like this in person haha.

I don’t think we get that view with naked eye anywhere on this planet.![]()
Regular cameras can take those kinds of images but you need a tripod and long exposure. You still don't see it by eye.Poop. Maybe i was thinking of the aurora thing up north?

I'm totally fine with post processing, and edit every single photo I take, and I do clone things out and add light shaping overlays, but if this is supposed to be a thread about the capabilities of an iPhone, using a sky swap seems a bit disingenuous to me.![]()

I agree with this. If editing brings out the best of the shot then I’m all in for that but not by entirely swapping the background.
