Other iPhones Aren't Worth More Than $600 (To Me)

It depends on how a person values iOS. I personally don’t think that is the case. I believe no reasonable person should spend more than 600 dollars on a phone that going to be outdate in perhaps two to three years. To me, smart phone is a commodity and disposable after few years. Spending 1K on such thing is insane to me.

I am speaking of this, because i have mortgage to pay, i have two car lease to pay, i have insurance to pay, i have bills to pay and i have to put money aside for my children’s education.

I would never buy a devices over 600, this is exactly why i am always buying devices that is two generations old. I picked up a refurbished iPhone 8 Plus last year under 600 and my Huawei P30 was brought in China with my Chinese money.

 stuff has always been too expensive. Always. Even the first MacMini at $499 was too expensive for what you got.
I'm in the same boat of thinking no iPhone is worth more than $600 new. And even at that price, that's pretty expensive. The $1000+ iPhones are Joker Sam prices. Total ripoff. So I'll likely do the same as OP and keep my current iPhone until it no longer works then buy a 2nd hand 2 year old model and keep it until it breaks. Etc.

Those who believe they must stay on the cutting edge of technology are looking at the game (Apple's game) in a very short sighted way. 20+ years from now, will it have made one tiny little bit of difference that you were always 2-4 years behind the latest tech curve?

Yeah, your Pixel 3a will NOT age well...substandard processor + 4GB RAM...just won't do well past 6 months (or less apparently for the Pixel 3 with stronger processor than yours).

So, damn with the camera bump, iPhone is a much better buy.

I don't agree. I paid roughly $600 for an iPhone for many years. I see no reason now why that should change.

That 8+ you’re about to buy cost $869 when it released two years ago. Would you have made the same argument and said “I’m not paying that much for an 8+, I’m getting the 6s plus because the 8+ is no better”?

If the answer is “yes”, then why don’t you just get the 6s plus today?

All you’re saying here is that you’re unwilling to pay more than $600 for a smartphone. I highly doubt you really believe that an 8+ and a XS Max should cost the same.

I wouldn't get the 6S Plus today because it doesn't have wireless charging and dual speakers. Two features I choose not to live without moving forward.

In one month I can probably get an 8 Plus for $550. So obviously I will wait for that.

I think possibly there is an answer for that, but you may not like hearing it.

All four US carriers used to subsidize the phones they sold. They paid full price, they locked you into a 2 year contract where the cost of the plan was slightly elevated and told you that all you had to pay was (roughly) $600.

The carrier recouped the difference between the total price they paid and the slightly elevated cost of your plan.

If you continued to use that phone after two years they made money off the phone because that slight elevation of price was never reduced.

So, the total price was hidden from you by the carrier.

Now, with leasing, the carriers aren't doing this anymore, the price of plans (maybe not your plan) is reduced and the total price of the phone is evident.

In short, you weren't paying just $600 during those years.

I'm just here to mention my final payment on my 8 Plus is coming up and year 3 of use will be payment free!

Any reason to pick up a new phone and a new $1000+ device payment? None that I can think of! Touch ID still works... phone pics still look good on FB... apps still run fine... phone is still plenty fast... I think I'm golden!

The phone will most certainly not stop functioning after two years. Physical damage can be avoided or reduced with a bumper.
