Please read and DIGEST what you have read.....

Seriously.....

I am tempted to explain things again to you in a more simple way but risk getting banned due to the words I would use....

I don't know what rock you live under but apples biggest and pretty much only competition is Samsung.Samsung has the biggest share of the android eco system and androids eco system is over 70% world market share.

Glad you are able to have a rational discussion without resorting to name calling

I have read and understood what you wrote. And I pointed out where you said Apple shouldn't be concerned with the S3 or S4 (direct competition of the iPhone 5/5S) You either poorly worded your argument or are overcomplicating it. If the latter it still doesn't make you right. For Apple (just like Samsung or and other phone maker) to succeed in the future it needs to expand. That's just business. Therefore Apple will have to compete for Android users that could choose the S4. End of story.

Try and justify it any way you want but that's the bottom line

I think the point he/she was trying to make is that Apple isn't nor have they ever been concerned with one OEM's products/marketshare.....

The popularity of Samsung will not affect the philosophy behind Apple's iOS devices. Perhaps public opinion/desires will drive certain trends (bigger screen sizes for instance), but to say that Apple is "concerned" with the GS4 means they see the device as an equal and have "worry" it will affect their bottom line.....

Given the sales numbers quoted and Apple's record 4th quarter, I'd say they're likely more concerned with improving their own phone/OS and moving down the plan they've likely had in motion for at least the last 2 years.

Also, Apple hasn't ever REALLY been concerned with market share - except when it affects their profits. If Apple can continue raking in a majority of smartphone profits with a smaller market share, I doubt they'd much care.

I'd say Apple cares about marketshare when it comes to cornering the high end market.

Apple's strategy has always been to take over the market for luxury gadgets and let the competitors fill in the low end market. That's why they don't care so much for the majority of their Android competition - because a lot of those are low end devices compared to the iPhone.

The GS4, however, is a high end device, one that competes directly with the iPhone, and it is starting to eat away at Apple's share of the high end market. Samsung is also brining in record profits on their smartphone business, that's money Apple could be making.

Besides, why do you think Apple went and sued all those Android manufacturers? You think they'd have spent all that time and money suing Samsung if they didn't see them as a threat? Please.

Tim Cook cares very much about Samsung, and Samsung know it.

I personally don't put much stock in those lawsuits....

And to be honest, I think Apple TRULY believes Samsung stole their ideas.

Given the state of the patent system, however, most of these lawsuits are simply a media-show nothing more....

Let me put it this way:

Apple made more money last Q4 than they did the previous Q4. And they will continue to try to increase that. If they can do it with a smaller market share, they'd be fine with it. They also won't stray from their philosophies on the iPhone specifically, simply because another OEM's phone is getting popular.

I was excited last month before the leaks. But not now, the S4 is just an oversized S3. I am interested to see what the official hardware specs are, size of battery and how good battery life is running on this new hardware, curious about the new screen tech.

I am a big Nexus phone fan, have owned all four nexus phones, and happy with my Nexus 4 right now. but also owned the Galaxy S2 and Note 2 briefly.

I am open minded to new tech, and was hoping Samsung would finally release a fresh and great design, like HTC has done with the One X last year, and now the One. Even the Nexus 4 is a good looking phone compared to the shiny and slippery plastic of the S3.

Even worse looking are the blue S3's, that look so cheesy painted to look like metal, or the Note 2 in gray, looks like a poor mans attempt with fake metal paint. At least the white phones look better, they are not trying to fake aluminum or metal, they are just white plastic, no BS attempt to be something else.

This S4 design is a real turn off to me, just huge shiny plastic rounded shape looks so lame. And Touchwiz blows too. The Galaxy phones are much better running CM10.1 or AOKP ROM's.

Leaks so far have indeed been quite disappointing. I think Samsung could be making a BIG difference in the industry this year. It is funny to see the current pattern though. For long–and let's be very honest–Samsung inspired itself from the iPhone. ACCORDING to RUMORS though, the shift is slowly turning round. Samsung could very well be taking the industry under its lead–I'm curious to see how they will or could do without a "big brother".
The only way for Apple to make a difference at this stage is iOs7 that will turn in demand for their new and exciting products. The folks at Apple are always following cycles and preparing something BIG. Wether this will be presented this year or later is still to be discussed, but I am confident that Apple will sooner or later regain its status of leader (that it still has not lost by the way).

I think Apples biggest competition is with itself. It has kept IOS almost the same as when the iPhone 1 was released. Yes this gives consistency to owners but the competition has moved on.

Consequently a lot of people have moved as well even though they had to put up with the horrendous build quality of other phones as a result.

The S4 isnt going to attract many iPhone devotees judging by current leaks.

It will likely attract those android fans after specs above design. Thus if I was apple the S4 wouldn't concern me. I would be more concerned with how I develop IOS into a more advanced OS whilst keeping it simple enough for the fan base that want a simple OS e.g. my girlfriend.

WTF are you talking about build quality? Unless you are talking about those cheap entry level phones, there are high end android phones that are well made with good quality.

S4 is my target to upgrade this year to replace my old Samsung phone, which unning fine for 2 years without service, compared to my girlfriend's "great build quality" iPhone 4s, which has been serviced 3 times in 2 years.

Again I see your argument and it has held true until now. However, the smartphone market isn't going to be able to grow at the rate it has in the past (except for maybe countries like China and India where cheaper smartphones are more suited to make a dent). There aren't a lot of people on feature phones looking to buy smartphones for the first time that Apple can capitalize on anymore.

The goal of businesses is to maintain sustainable growth (just like economies). That is how businesses succeed. In order for Apple to maintain sustainable growth they will need to tap into the Android market, specifically the market Samsung has done very well in with their Galaxy lineup. Remember the minor panic at the last Apple's earnings report when they didn't reach analysts predictions even though they reached their own predictions and had growth? What happens if they don't reach their own predictions? https://www.macrumors.com/2013/03/11/supply-chain-indicators-point-to-poor-february-for-apple/

What happens if Apple has a decline? Everything isn't peachy at Apple HQ. Now is not the time to ignore the competition of your closest competitor when they release they're flagship device. To me that sound's like a mistake that Blackberry once made and we know what happened there. Would Apple's decline be that drastic and quick? Most likely not, but that is not a reason to not be concerned with the S4.

The fact that it is only NOW this year, that we will see smartphones outnumber feature phones tells me there is a lot of market left to be had.

Also, I agree that Apple is looking into sustainable growth and that they have to be targeting Android's market share.....I just don't think its the segment of market share the GS4 currently sits in....

I think Apple will create the cheaper iPhone and try to appeal to the "lower-end" market with a "Nexus-priced" iPhone. I don't think they are worried, or intend to change anything about their plan for the high-end, premium market, which is where the GS4 sits...

Fair enough. I feel that Apple is concerned with their competition and that is why (according to rumors) are considering a lower cost iPhone. Either way Apple sits in a precarious position where their next few moves could benefit or hurt them greatly in the smartphone market

However if they want to continue growth in the premium smartphone market, Apple will have to compete with the S4 who looks to retain Android customers
