Assuming you purchased it from the App Store... otherwise it is not available for purchase.
Correct. When I bought my late 2011 MBP, iPhoto was already installed. Then after a clean install of Lion, I had to reinstall it from the App Store but never did til Yosemite (10.10.1). Since I have 10.11 GM installed, it is still available for download.

So if I install El Capitan over Yosemite is it going to keep my iPhoto or had I better copy it to a jump drive to install it

Actually I had to restore a hidden update for iPhoto and it reappeared.

I just got an update indication in the app store to update an iphotos version from last march to Yosemite and I am on El Capitan beta 10.11.1 ? When i try to update to see what happens...the update fails and says it is not available. Any ideas? By the way iphotos does not show in my launchpad group either?

I have the same issue with iPhoto. Would like to get rid of it if its not going to work with El Capitan.

I wonder if there is a way to delete from the app store update queue?

Okay, here is the fix (from Apple online chat)! If you aren't using iPhoto, then delete it (I don't even think you can since the new Photos app is out, right?). Open finder. Go under Applications. Find iPhoto (mine was grayed out with a white cancel sign over it [a circle with a diagonal line through it]) and drag and drop the icon into your Trash can. Then empty your trash can. Close the App Store app if it's open, then reopen it and the alert should be gone. :)

Getting an iPhoto update notification, but then being prevented from downloading/installing it, has been a very common complaint in Yosemite's App Store customer reviews since "Photos for OS X" was first released.

It May Still Be Possible to Update to the newest Version of iPhoto.
A few iPhoto users have said, and Apple eventually confirmed it in an (intentionally?) obscure recommendation, that the way to update iPhoto to the newest version in 10.10.3 and later is to 1.) delete the iPhoto app; 2.) quit the App Store (or maybe even log out and back in again?); 3.) reopen the App Store and go to the Purchases tab. With the old version of iPhoto now missing from your hard drive, the fully updated version will successfully download/install. I don't know if the rules have changed or not at this point in time, but, as I say, it has worked for a number of people in recent months. You certainly have nothing to lose by trying, although I would make sure I have a backup copy somewhere, just in case.

I HATE Photo. When I updated I didn't realize it was going to override iPhoto. I panicked and called Apple Support and they were able to help me delete Photo...I guess it didn't take so I was able to keep iPhoto. The beef I have with Photo is that it doesn't have Places map with pin drops. I'm still on 6 on my iPad, I refuse tongue up my Places map. I

I deleted photos.app 3 days after its debut because the "hidden" photos weren't so hidden. El Capitan put it back on and this "hidden" photos (feature?) bug is still there so I deleted photos.app once again. Using iPhoto and pixelmator work well in El Capitan.

I'm not a fan of photos so far but will keep trying it. Just wish I could get 9.6.1 version of iphoto!

I'm running 10.11.1 and have iPhoto 9.6.1 as well as Aperture 3.6 and Photos 1.2. All open and work just fine. I really use any of them though, since my go to photo app is Photoshop CS6. But on occasion, I do use them so will keep them around.

I only deleted photos.app because it kept popping open when plugging in my iPhone instead of iPhoto, the desired app.

When your phone is plugged in, open Image Capture (Utilities). In the lower left corner is a dropdown for selecting the action to be performed when a device is attached.

That doesn't work for me. You can't drag and drop iPhoto into the Trash can.
How can i get rid of it ???

I don't see why you can't, that's strange. Maybe try selecting the icon and go to the menu bar to delete or right click/ seconday click and do it that way? Otherwise, I would contact Apple via chat or phone if I were you. Good luck.
