iPod iPod 3G Appreciation Thread

Taken from the "Post your mac setup 7" thread, seems like there's a few people that love the iPod 3G.

I love the smooth lines, the lovely touch sensitive buttons (that can't be used with gloves, but neither can my iPhone so I am used to it), and the amazing backlight. 20GB of music on there, a very cool music quiz game.

This iPod shipped with a dock, a wired remote, headphones and a carry case with a clip. I really do love this thing.

And finally, my introduction to Firewire. I had a PC at the time, but the iPod shipped with this lovely Apple adaptor to change to mini-FW. The transfer speeds were like nothing I had seen before (USB 2.0 wasn't out back then).

I love you firewire.

Sadly, I forgot my 3G when I left for fall semester at college this year...so no pics until Thanksgiving. But I totally agree about the awesomeness of the 3G...
One of the most underrated points to me is the grayscale screen--SOO much easier to see without the backlight turned on. Also, unlike any of the following models, no off-colored clickwheel...just plain white goodness, save for the super-cool red illumination.

All the packed-in accessories (on the bigger models) were really nice to get as well! Dock, case, remote...that's easily $60 bucks of accesories that I'd buy anyways...and besides, the case has helped keep my 3G looking really good--the only exception being the slight scratches on the back from the tag inside the case...oh well.

Traded for this with a copy of Tiger a few months ago, I love this thing so far! 15gb

I also love how there are no crevices for dirt/dust/liquid to get down in (click wheel) for outside activities where there might be dirty conditions.

I love the 3G, for me, although it wasn't nearly as easy to use blind as the 4th gen, just had the most amazingly aesthetically perfect design. I loved the fact that those red lights shone from its touch buttons, almost ooozing quality, while its near lack of moving parts (and total lack of moving parts for the user- aside the hold switch) was phenomenal. It was also the first one that i remember seeing all over the place and wanting!

Finally, it came in the most amazing box, which seemed to just keep unfolding with more and more wonderful INCLUDED accessories.

I have three of them, one of which is in mint condition, and i used them all the time untill i got my touch, which i now consider as the next best ipod since the 3G.

like the 3g it is:

All touch controls
An absolute joy to use
you have once again to marvel at its size with respect to its function
the 3G set up the shape/design of the ipod (classic) for years to come, and my guess is that the touch will do the same

I always loved the 3rd generation iPod, and I still really want one, but unfortunately they hold their value rather well. In particular I am looking for an almost perfect 10, 15 or 20GB model, as I think the larger capacity models are too thick. One day I'll have one...

I loved mine, but it ultimately died. COD was water damage secondary to running in a thunderstorm. I do have to admit my replacement running iPod was a Nano, and I do rather love NikePlus.

Just bought one (15gb) on eBay for $25 in the box with all accessories. I also picked a 4th gen 4ogb for $20 will all the orignal accessories. Hope i enjoy it as much as all of you. Happy Holidays!

Glad to see the comments guys. I love the thing. I also agree that it's the pinnacle of Apple iPod design. I love my iPhone, I really do, but this iPod is getting on in years and still looks fresh. The screen is so easy to read, the buttons turning red is amazing.

This was my first iPod. I had a driving job and used it 8 hours a day for two years. The red buttons, the font... wow.. I'm having a silly bout of nostalgia here. I approve of this thread.

I remember when there was no such thing as an iPod or iMac for that matter. Back when your radio/cassette walkman cost $100 and was the latest and greatest technology, other than VHS recorders of course.
I also remember the iTunes icon being purple, so pretty.

Anybody had any luck converting their hard drive-based 3G ipod into a solid-state (flash card based) iPod?

Periodically I ask around, just in case someone made it work.

I recently got a 4G to work....for awhile....with a flash card but the cheap part from China failed on me, so no dice. I did, however, love it while it lasted.

I would probably pay 300 dollars again for a 3G with an extra long life battery and a solid-state 16 gigs of memory. Total heaven.

My 80gb Classic was dropped and the hard drive died so i swapped it out for a 120gb solid state drive and it works great, and it evens loads faster.

Touch > push

This was my first iPod, and imho is the best for a number of reasons.

1. The buttons light up all pretty
2. You can control it while docked without having to push hard therefore reducing pressure on the dock point (more an issue on 3rd party perifs when the dock surround isn't as snug as it should be)
3. It was my first iPod

My 3G has finally just given up the ghost after 4 and half years. It cuts out in the middle of tracks, skips, randomly crashes an won't sync more than 5GB of content (probably the RAM cache or the HD), but was working flawlessly up until last week.

My favourite iPod was, unsurprisingly my first - the 2G with solid state wheel but mechanical buttons around it's circumference. A better layout I believe than the separate buttons. However that one only lasted a year and a half before the HD gave out, so what do I know.

The 3G was my first iPod. I paid $449 for the 40GB model at Best Buy and still remember the entire buying experience. I was very excited.
My wife still uses it on a daily basis. (I have migrated to the shuffle and its minimalist design) She loves the fact that her entire music library is at her fingertips.
I too think the 3G is the best design of all the full-size iPods. I love the row of buttons and the fact that they light up red. I have to admit that I think that the shuffle is the best designed product ever (Yes, I mean all products in the man made world). I have an iPhone, and I love it, but the design of the 3G is better.

3G was my first 'pod as well. I got the 10gb model when I was 15. My parents didn't like the iPod back then because they thought it was an excuse to be antisocial. They have owned 2 each since then.

The backlit touch buttons were amazing. When they were first announced, I thought they were just a premium version of the 2G iPod; they couldn't possibly make something which looked that cool available to the plebs

I loved that iPod to death. It held strong for about 36 months, until my use of it as a bootable external drive finally killed it.

I now own a 5th Gen U2 iPod, which, after about 2 years of constant use still looks near new, and a 4th Gen Nano, which I lose in my pocket because its so damn thin.

Still use my 40g 3G, has taken a lot of use without a hiccup and I love the firewire it's great as a truly portable drive.

I bought an ipod nano and recently sold it because i couldn't read the screen very easily, and have since gone back to my ipod 3g 40g, i will post some pics next time im on, i have the original box and all original accessories. I refer to it 'lovingly' as my 'i brick' becuase i bought the biggest hard case i could find.
