Does anyone know if this applies to ALL 5th generation ipods, or just the late 2006? I got the original 5th gen and some of the other updates/ features that were released in the late 2006 model haven't applied (like the search feature). I don't have it here with me, so I can't check.

I just downloaded 1.3 onto my 5G iPod as well, which I bought when they first came out, so you're good to go.

I read on another forum (TUAW?) that video rentals are indeed supported with this update. Can someone verify?

Mine downloaded and updated the firmware... and then the screen was like the old old iPods!! black and white!!!! so now i'm having to restore my iPod to see what happens...

EDIT - Nope, a restore won't work..

I was hoping this patch would fix the bug where an MP3 encoded in LAME skips about 2/3 of the way through the song... the bug is still there :(

Can we see a picture of this problem, it would be interesting to see a new ipod with the old interface...

What's the famous 1418 error?

Well, I just went ahead and updated my iPod. So far so good :) (It's a 5.5G)

I like that this has been the (I think) third update in the last year.

6.6 Mb!?!?!

Yeah. Thats 6.6 MB and you think Apple's going to fit in Movie Rentals or coverflow in that?

Just updated a 60 GB 5th gen.

Not sure about that LAME bug, either... post the exact method used to encode it, if you can. (LAME version, bit rate, CBR/VBR/ABR, flags/settings, etc)

I use the iTunes-LAME version 2.0.9 (34), file date is 10/26/07.
LAME version is reported as 3.97.
I typically use -V 0 --vbr-new

Could it really be the end of Error -48?

It appears so... :D

oh please god make this be true - it would be nice not to have to restore my ipod everytime i add a song to itunes...

Edit: well straight after an update the problems still there. after restoring (for the last time?)....

Firmware is by definition very small.

Yeah but it took Apple 50MB on the iPods and the iPhone/touch to just rewrite the OS so that they could block the TV out functionality while the Rental is running! :D

Secondly, the graphics chip in the new iPods is of much higher caliber than the 5G iPod. It is due to this chip that the nano and classic are able to fly the album art around their whole screen and make ghostly refelctions of almost everything coloured!

i fixed thi serror by doing what the apple support srticle tells you to do!!

put you mac to cupertino (sp?) time and then restore your ipod, and put it back again after the restore! not had the error since!

Argh, already been a few days without my iPod working.. trying the 'iPod Updater' thing to try and fix it. Hope it works out.. I've got have SOMETHING to play music while I'm driving!

What was error -48?

torero, this is bug fixed, nothing like coverflow. From everything I've read, that feature is actually a detriment to the 6G iPods.

Everything you read from the chorus of complainers that hang around here. Coverflow works fine on my iPod Classic (as I am sure it does on most if not all of them), and if you don't like it you don't have to use it. There are many people around here who won't ever be pleased by anything.

I'd hardly call a feature that you don't have to use a "detriment", especially when it works as advertised.

The only thing that seems new is that Smart playlists are updating live eg my "My Top Rated" list loses/gains songs when changing the ratings.

It always worked like that on my 4G and classic.

What went wrong

Hello,

while installing the update, iTunes said that my iPod was "busy" and the update was not completed.
Taking out the iPod froze iTunes, which needed a force quit.
iPod is restored (it is now empty).
Now iPod does not mount and freezes iTunes.
Tried re-setting iPod, re-installing iTunes.
I am running 10.4.11 on an Intel Macbook and all software is updated.
Any clue, anyone, please?
