Like a previous poster said, if you are having that much trouble deciding, go with the Classic. It is a great iPod. Large Capacity, you can operate it in your pocket, etc. The Video on the Classic is nice, and very viewable.

I think if music is the primary driver of your portable purchase, the Classic is still the better bet - especially if the model you buy is capable of swallowing your entire music collection.

I want more from a PMP than the Touch offers, and ultimately if you have a laptop and/or a smartphone to boot, I think you do realise after a while how little substance there is with the Touch experience. It's a great flashy toy for occasional use as far as I'm concerned and I tend to use it that way. For 'serious' portable music listening it's either the Classic or a barrage of non-iPods for me. As far as PMP duties go I'm plumping for a Cowon A3.

As of now the Touch can swallow my music library but it's growing fast the only thing I could do is create a list of my favorite songs. so it would fit in the future. It would also have to hold movies too.

My grandad put it very well this afternoon when I discussed the pros and cons of my 16Gb iPod Touch vs. his 80Gb 5th gen. iPod. He likened an iPod Touch to a car with electric windows,

*after a conversation of flash vs. HDD*

Him: Did you see the windows on my Nissan today?
Me: Yes
Him: one and a half turns down, one and a half turns up.
Me: It's not that bad, lol.
Him: You know, cars these days aren't very different to cars of the past, they do what they do. Only these days they have all sorts of kak like electric windows, you don't need them but they're nice to have and the manufacturers just spew them onto you.

So there's an old man's perspective of the situation..

That was actually very good and that is exactly where MP3 players have gone people demand more feature however with all these features People lose focus on what they were designed to do Music. The Touch has all these fancy features that people like but it loses focus on music quality.

It also really depends on whether you're going to squint at a Touch-sized screen for any length of time as far as movies are concerned, doesn't it?

In my case the driving factor of ordering the slightly larger A3 (it has a staggering set of capabilities but I expect to be using it almost solely as a video and audio playback machine) was that it would not only play back VOB files (i.e. direct DVD rips) but that it is beginning to be large (.5" may not seem like a lot, but it is a noticeable difference IMO in a device of this class, especially with the resolution difference) and high-res (800 x 480) enough to be playing DVD's on my side when I'm working at my laptop in a hotel room somewhere, and I wouldn't have to clutter my increasingly SSD-based laptops with VOB files.

The Classic does video too, and for me it's more than enough for squinting at the occasional video podcast on the train. Too 'big' a screen - e.g. my 4.5" 1024 x 600 Sony UX's - makes iPod-res Podcasts look distinctly grotty.

You, Know I wish i Could just get both unfortunately the wallet won't let me but I'm going with the Classic Thanks guys for the help! Maybe I'll get the touch later when it get's updated.

iTunes keeps a log of how many times you listen to (or watch) each item in your library, when I only had a 4 gig Nano I relied on this list to help me know what stuff I wanted to always have with me.

But now that I have an 80 GB classic and don't have to decide I like it much better, the screen is really nice and I think it's better than I thought to watch video on, plus it's lots cheaper than the touch

IPOD CLAssIC IS BEST!

I own a ipod classic (80gb) and it is so much better then ipod touches as they have hardly any memory!!!!
and it has 40hours of music and 5 hours of video (INCREDIBLE) around 20-40,000 songs and well HELL heaps of videos!!!!!

The Classic does video just fine.

Yeah...I watched video for the first time on mine on a recent plane ride. Not as bad as I thought, very comfortable. Personally I feel an mp3 player you need to look at to operate is a crappy idea. Am I the only one that likes buttons? If the iPhone had a real keypad I might get one. Dialing on that thing is slow and awkward.

I'm also in the middle of choosing between an iPod Classic and and iPod Touch to replace my very ancient 3G iPod. One point I did pick up in certain reviews was that the audio quality of the Classic is better with some saying the Touch had a hiss. If audio is your main interest then make sure to try both out.

ipod classic IS BEST!

the ipod classic is so easy to use and doesn't scratch as easily as the older ipods as it is made of proper metal
by the way does anyone know where i can get FULL length family guy videos that are free and easy to download????????
cheers

I know this post is a month old or so, but I wanted to throw in some comments.

I had a iPod G4 20g, which is monochrome, no video, but the scrolling was fast at least.

I have a lot of music and eventually filled it. For me I wanted the choice of being able to pick what I wanted and not just have a playlist of a smaller amount. There was more stuff I wanted to put on it and had to take stuff off.

This past Holiday I got the 80G Classic. I was considering the Touch, mainly because it was new, slick, cool and had web stuff. After much thought, I decided that all I needed was more space and the color and other stuff was a bonus.

Going from iPod G4 to a iPod Classic is like going from a Mac Plus to a Aluminum iMac with a Core 2 Duo.

The screen was better than expected, the menus are nice, but seem slower and the extra stuff like the games and video playback are nice. The Album art thing is new to me, since I couldn't do that before.

So, I guess if you are more into internet, video, photos get the Touch, if you are a music FREAK then you are going to need more than 16meg. Another thing I liked was the silver seemed like it would scratch less and looked more durable.

Thanks for the input to be honest i still haven't made my decision I almost bought one until my canon printer I wanted went on sale so i bought that which is kind of good because now I have more time to decide.

just got an 80 gb classic

went from 20 gb 3rd gen to nano 4g 1st gen....spent tw years micromanaging my music on a weekly/daily basis. Gosh darn am I glad to be back to infinite space.....feels hella good....i was torn between both just like all of these other people....i made the decision on the classic after thre emonths of being torn....i'm so effing happy about the decision.......fyi i have a blackberry so if i really need intrnet and all that good **** i go to my blackberry. honestly, touch is "wow" factor for liek all but ten minutes, then wehen it comes down to it, liek the car analogy, the bells and whistles do jack..........space is the true accomodation....

The only Problem is that i like to watch Video podcasts.

I have an iPod 5G (aka 1st gen video). 60 Gb, big enough for my whole music library, videos, photos and podcasts.

The video experience still strikes me as amazingly good. I even watch widescreen movies on it (in bed) occasionally and find it acceptable. For TV shows and video podcasts, where image aesthetics don't count (so much), it's completely adequate.

In your case I would definitely go with the iPod Classic 80 Gb. Incredible storage, much better battery life, good video experience, much better handling due to the touch wheel and Cover Flow to boot, which is btw so much nicer if you have a lot of music on your device. I've tried the iPod Touch of friends and in stores and I find it a bit disappointing to browse music in Cover Flow mode and find just 1 or 2 titles "behind" the album cover.

I purchased a classic 80gb as my iphone was just pants IMHO and I gave that to my wife and use a nano and the classic. I am currently away for a few weeks and I have my entire music collection and my entire Black adder series as well as 12 movies on my classic and I am not missing my laptop.
