I think I have the best of the iPod world - at least for my use. I have a 5G Nano, and what I think is a 3G Shuffle (square one). The Nano is a perfect commuter iPod for the bus or plane - podcasts, music, videos, radio. The shuffle is the perfect workout iPod. Both refurbished from Apple. Don't like what they did with the 6G Nano, but I'm glad to see they brought back the sort of old style Shuffle.

I too cannot stand the new touch screen Nano. I think it is a UI nightmare. I tested it out many a time at the Apple store and every time my opinion of it has gotten lower and lower. I am very surprised that Apple let this device out of the engineering dept.

Luckily some 5G Nano's have just appeared again on the refurb store and I have ordered one 2 minutes ago.

Many of the points you made factored into my getting a refurb 5th gen instead of a new 6th gen when my 2nd gen was stolen recently, even though I already have another 5th gen. I'm not impressed with the new nano either. It's little more than an expensive touch-screen shuffle.

Totally agree. Fifth Gen is the sweet spot.

I really don't like the 6G Nano either. I've tinkered with them at the Apple Store and each time I walk away unimpressed and ticked off that Apple so radically destroyed the nano line.

I hated the clickwheel on previous generations. My thumb is too big for precision scrolling, so most of the time it'll scroll two items at a time even if I move finger slowly. Very frustrating. Also, they were too big for hiking and running. 6g is the step in the right direction. I wish they replaced the dock connector with micro USB and filled the saved space with battery. And Bluetooth. And 32GB. Then it'll be perfect. :D

I waited until September to buy my new iPod Nano because I wanted to see what the 6G would bring to the table. When I saw what it was I rushed to the store and instantly purchased a 5G (silver) and have enjoyed it immensely since then.

I would be interested to hear what the Nano 6G sales figures are like as I think it is 2 steps backward compared to the 5G. This September should be interesting. I think that Apple will move back to a more usable form factor and make the 6G nano the next mini.

I did the exact same thing. I couldn't believe what Apple had turned the iPod Nano into. Seeing as they went back to the old form factor for the Shuffle last fall, I see them going back on the Nano this fall. I never see people with the new Nanos, and I see people with Nanos all the time.

Don't you mean the third generation iPod shuffle with no buttons? The iPod and Mac mini were/are both widely successful.

Well now that I have actually had the pleasure (or displeasure) of owning the 6th gen nano since my 4th gen broke, here is my general thoughts:

Negative Thoughts

- Still haven't figured out a optimum position to put this in to see the screen, yet have it wearable with the clip. Though I use it at work and my lanyard seems to work good, I couldn't see how other people could wear this thing and still have easy access to the screen.
- Hate the sleep/wake button, its obnoxious to have to press it every time you want to see the screen, but not a deal breaker.
- Don't like the fact there is no volume control on screen or a progress meter for songs on the device's now playing screen. You pretty much have to guess if you fast forward anything on the device.
- Black on White is a joke and was obviously an after thought. Inverse all the colors? Wow that took a lot of effort apple.
- Clip is surprisingly weak considering its like a premium shuffle, yet the shuffle has a better clip. Though I'm not so sure if its the clip or the fact it is so light.
- cost is ridiculous, it should be in the $140 range for the 16GB. and right around the $100 mark for the 8GB. I mean it has half the features, and uses less than half of the material used in its predecessor yet costs the same?

Neutral Thoughts

- The novelty wears off quickly, especially having owned a iPod Touch in the past.
- Its a great gimmick how they've attempted to make it look feature rich by making so many icons to shift through.
- Its been roughly 5 months since the release and there have been NO SOFTWARE UPDATES to address some of the complaints?
- Me personally, it doesn't matter if the video/camera is there or not I never used them.

Positive Thoughts

- noticeable improvement in sound over my 4th gen, its louder and seems more pronounced.
- purest aspect, its a music player..the only feature I've really used on any of my iPods.
- Scrolling through the song list is nice and quick with the quick scroll feature, thank goodness because swiping would take a long time to go through 2,300 songs. Actually quicker than the click wheel with larger libraries.
- Touch screen is very responsive and concise for how small it is, I have no problem navigating through the screens, I have average hands.
- The clip, always nice to be able to clip it somewhere without having to dig in your pocket to pull it out.
- Can change backgrounds, even if limited in options its still nice to have.

Bottomline: The nano has been neutered in order to move people to their money hog (iPod Touch) so they can make money off of purchasing apps. There was little effort put into this particular model, however a niche in the market is probably going to like it much like the classic it will have its own fan base.

I'm giving it a chance as I've only had it for 2 days and it works ok as a music player, but I mean at this point there are far better alternatives to the nano now. You can pick up a Sansa Clip+ and a 16GB microSD card and still end up saving $60 over the cost of the nano.

Yup, I use my iPhone for music and media when travelling, and I wanted the smallest possible iPod for gym and running that still had a small screen, so the new nano is perfect for me and I'm really enjoying it! I have no issues with the touch screen...

+1 This is what I wanted it for too. For music when I work out.

I also have a watch band for it. (tiktok) and I run the cord up my sleeve. Easy to change songs and I only wear the band when I work out.

Well my local Wal-Mart happened to have a new 8GB 5G nano (green) in stock. I bought it.

Now, I'm torn because the old nano has much better features and is easier to navigate (especially on the treadmill), but the screen is just awful. It has to have the poorest quality screen of any iPod I've ever owned and the sound quality is not as good as the 6G. It just looks and feels cheap.

I'm gonna stick with the 6G for now. If Microsoft would ever release a Windows Phone-based Zune, I might consider that since I do most of my excising indoors (with Wi-fi) and would love to use the Zune subscription service.

Why not just get a WP7? It has the zune capability built in.
