Well now that I have actually had the pleasure (or displeasure) of owning the 6th gen nano since my 4th gen broke, here is my general thoughts:
Negative Thoughts
- Still haven't figured out a optimum position to put this in to see the screen, yet have it wearable with the clip. Though I use it at work and my lanyard seems to work good, I couldn't see how other people could wear this thing and still have easy access to the screen.
- Hate the sleep/wake button, its obnoxious to have to press it every time you want to see the screen, but not a deal breaker.
- Don't like the fact there is no volume control on screen or a progress meter for songs on the device's now playing screen. You pretty much have to guess if you fast forward anything on the device.
- Black on White is a joke and was obviously an after thought. Inverse all the colors? Wow that took a lot of effort apple.
- Clip is surprisingly weak considering its like a premium shuffle, yet the shuffle has a better clip. Though I'm not so sure if its the clip or the fact it is so light.
- cost is ridiculous, it should be in the $140 range for the 16GB. and right around the $100 mark for the 8GB. I mean it has half the features, and uses less than half of the material used in its predecessor yet costs the same?
Neutral Thoughts
- The novelty wears off quickly, especially having owned a iPod Touch in the past.
- Its a great gimmick how they've attempted to make it look feature rich by making so many icons to shift through.
- Its been roughly 5 months since the release and there have been NO SOFTWARE UPDATES to address some of the complaints?
- Me personally, it doesn't matter if the video/camera is there or not I never used them.
Positive Thoughts
- noticeable improvement in sound over my 4th gen, its louder and seems more pronounced.
- purest aspect, its a music player..the only feature I've really used on any of my iPods.
- Scrolling through the song list is nice and quick with the quick scroll feature, thank goodness because swiping would take a long time to go through 2,300 songs. Actually quicker than the click wheel with larger libraries.
- Touch screen is very responsive and concise for how small it is, I have no problem navigating through the screens, I have average hands.
- The clip, always nice to be able to clip it somewhere without having to dig in your pocket to pull it out.
- Can change backgrounds, even if limited in options its still nice to have.
Bottomline: The nano has been neutered in order to move people to their money hog (iPod Touch) so they can make money off of purchasing apps. There was little effort put into this particular model, however a niche in the market is probably going to like it much like the classic it will have its own fan base.
I'm giving it a chance as I've only had it for 2 days and it works ok as a music player, but I mean at this point there are far better alternatives to the nano now. You can pick up a Sansa Clip+ and a 16GB microSD card and still end up saving $60 over the cost of the nano.
