I've tried something that looks more like the iPhone 4. No double edges and glass on both sides. Something like you described am I right?

I really like it, but it's not what I had in mind (for the back at least). I agree with other posters that the nano should have color. Try coloring the outside ring to see what it looks like.

Here's a rough draft built around a round LCD screen I found online. The black border is too thick and I'd hope Apple could make one with less space around the active area. The overall size is also bigger than I would like.

For this option, I stuck with something that Apple could easily build, with wired headphones and USB charging/syncing.

Some simple specs could be:
- Display with push feedback (Click to enter, double click for Siri, click and hold for power on/off)
- Special guestures designed for small round displays
- Magnetic locked minijack connector
- Micro USB connection
- optional induction charging dock
- Clickwheel navigation
- Compass
- etc

- Wearable as a wrist watch, pocket watch or necklace.

I realy hope you guys like my design!

Please add Bluetooth & AirPlay to your design and send it to Apple; you get a job there ....

I'll bet they say: Keep dreaming! ;) I know that a lot of specs are hard to combine in a compact body like this. On the other side, I'm still hoping for a little revolution with nano electronics. Maybe it takes about 3 years for these products to grow into the market but I'm pretty sure that components like nanowires and transistors are already used in some prototypes.

I just added Bluetooth and WiFi! Airplay would be a software spec right?

@ noisycats Thanks! :)

@ MacSince1985 Good Job! You did great work with the measurements. Seems like the biggest obstacle would be the headphones jack. By losing the clip (like the one on the actual Nano) it gets a little bit extra space to give the body more depth.
I think that using that display as a prototype would be unnecessary hard to implement. Thinking about how fast electronics develope, I would say that what they invent now, we can see or buy tomorrow. Like you say, Apple would build it herself. Even with better specs and smaller hardware.

I could'nt resist to design an accessory for this product:

The ciruclar shape makes it very easy to click it into any kind of adapter like these headphones. The headphones minijack can be used to lock the iPod into this position. A gyroscope can be used to level the horizontal possition of the display, depending which App you use. Think about watch bands, Speaker sets (remote Siri), necklace, on your bike (compass App) or public docks where you can plug in your own music...

@ MacSince1985 Looking at this application I like the fact that you can identify yourself by showing your color, even when you wear it into any kind of adapter. It got something playful and personal I think.

Be careful posting your ideas, you may see your design products in China in a week or so....and selling in the fake Apple stores...

Got your point loby but... my world is to small to realise something like this. So I hope that Apple will be first using it. ;)

I've made a pretty stupid mistake.
I did'nt think about the solution Apple uses to dock the recent Nano and Shuffle. In my design I use a micro USB slot to sync the iPod but Apple already uses a 3-way mini jack connection which makes it way more minimal. I did'nt think about that...

--- Edit: Fixed that! ---

Thank you AndyinAti for the compliment! :)

Think about this:
How about an App Store section where you can buy screen Apps for the Nano. A store where you can buy a skin from your favourite watch brand (if possible with complete functionality for all chronographic and date functions). And sync multiple skins from iTunes to your iPod Nano. I would love to have one with my favorite Tag Heuer watch theme!

I think a round display could add more market for watch companies to make money their way on digital Watch Apps. Not like a replacement. Nothing beats the analog mechanic watch! It's just a fun way to expand and reach out for the people who like to choose their own theme and style. What about, for example, Swatch who develops a watch band for the iPod Nano and adds a free code to download the matching skin in iTunes? Anyway, this is how the iTunes App Store would look like:

@ moderator: I think that this is getting offtopic and I would like to continue this discussion in the direction of concepting and developing. I'm not sure if this is the right place for this topic. If not, is it possible to move it?

I thought of docking the iPod in a headset. But it would be hard to control in that position.
Another idea is a lanyard/ earbud combo. The lanyard would be like a necklace with earbuds protruding (so when they fall out of your ear, they only go down a few inches instead of feet). The iPod would be secured at the end of the lanyard like a pendant. This solution is probably too girly for most guys though.

I agree. I like to design the dream product as well as the realistic option. The one I showed here could easily be built with today's technology, while yours would require some improvement in miniaturization.

We should think of some functionalities that differentiate it from the regular Nano. Remote control for front row/ Apple TV? Companion to iPad/iPhone?

How about a surface transducer on the back? Just place the pod on any surface and get music that fills the room.

Wow, that's a really impressive design. I'm not a fan of the current nano, but I think this is fantastic. Your mock ups are well done and you successfully replicated the Apple feel. Great work!

Cool .. but no place for 30 pin dock :( But still .. a great mock up to boot. I love it.
You know Apple won't use anything USB as their standard connector on the iPod side. (30 pin dock is USB, but only on the computer side)

But ... Thunderbolt can be a great possibility. Put it in mate! :)

@ MacSince1985 - Headphones necklace like that are perfect for this kind of shaped iPod! The functionalities you've mentioned are very nice! Seems all possible except for the surface transducer, but still would be coul to have something like that. Fits the rumor about the build-in Nano speaker. ;)

I was thinking about a Guitar tuning App. Would love to have that! Another $10,- saved on other stuff.

@ na1577 - Thank you!

@ iSayuSay - Thank you too! Got your point! I've changed the first design and left the micro USB connection. I forgot about the current way the Nano and Shuffle get input from an USB connection. It's all in the headphones jack. I don't know about the speed compared to Thunderbolt but I like way Apple solved it right now.

Only the Shuffle charges via the headphone jack. The Nano still has a dock connector. I think Thunderbolt is overkill for this application.

The tuning app would require a mic. I've used a similar app on an Android phone, so it's definitely possible. But why limit it to guitars?

Again, wow. Very well done! Those headphones would be totally awesome - I actually tried to do that using the clip of my iPod Nano and a pair of earmuffs that had a 3.5mm headphone jack attached.. It didn't work. lol

But man, wow. Very well done. :)

@ You're right. Just the Shuffle. Looks like a great way to win space. I'm not sure about the speed. Can't find much information about that...

Other instruments? Sure! That's just software.
I like the "contact tuners" for guitars. That's why I've chosen for a sense tuner. Could be a microphone tuner for sure! I build-in a microphone into the case. I like the idea of choosing your own headphones. So a build-in microphone would make it functional with any headphones and a perfect tuner. Let me think about that one...

@ Hexiii - You're right. Why not!? I have made this Watch skins/themes store and it should be the same place where you can buy Apps.

@ chrisvee - Thank you for the great comment! :)

What about app store for the Nano? :)
The current iPod Nano does not run iOS. Its interface is designed to look somewhat like iOS, but I think the processor is not powerful enough to support a full OS.

Since we're dreaming, let's put in a fast processor and iOS.:)

I know, but this is not the current iPod nano :)

But I think it's enough powerful to run its own iOS with its own app store.

It could be possible but I am thinking about a Nano AppStore in iTunes. Like the older version of the AppStore used for games on the third generation iPods. What you buy in iTunes gets synced with your iPod. That makes it much more comfortable to browse trough Apps and previews.

So, AppStore yes! Only in iTunes. What do you guys think?

I don't want to stop you from dreaming, just my point of view... :)
