I'm in the same dilemma...I can use to Student Union promo and get an awesome silver iPod Mini...But i keep telling myself that its a steal to get the iPod color 20gb for only 90 bucks more! idk...Do you guys think that i should just settle with the iPod Mini or get the 20 Gb. I would like some space on to iPod for storage of other files and $90 compared to $269 is a big difference, thats why i think i should jump on this deal while i have the chance.

Yeah pretty much the same situation here...

What would u recomend?
iPod or iPod Mini.

I had a mini from before, and just bought a powerbook and got another one for the cram and jam deal. I use on for music and one for podcasts. The only reason i took it is cos you have to pay for it and wait for the rebate, and since i had one already i was really just taking it cos it was free.

I say go mini, why....simple Battery life is the best of ANY ipod product. And they'll be updating them soon, maybe for back to school. 60 gigs are for backups of entire libraries, or for those forced in to exile to sicily. 6 - 8 gigs gives a long and good selection. and a portable size. Best balance of all the ipod offerings. And i have owned them all at one point or another.

I think I'm going to get the mini now... I have a feeling Apple is coming out with a new uber-iPod this fall - iPod video maybe? - and then I'll be really tempted to buy one once they drop below $300. If I buy a iPod w/ color screen now for $300, I'd want it to last me at least 3 years. With the mini, I won't fridget if it only lasts me a year... much. :)

They will update the minis before the regular iPods. You'll see. The only thing that might happen is that they introduce another top of the line iPod as they did with the photo. The rest is gonna stay for a while.

For people with a shuffle... there is no real need to get a mini. If I want to go light and only take a couple of albums with me I take my Shuffle. I find the 6GBs to be limited.

Umm that's what I meant by iPod video this fall. You did notice that Apple always puts the sub-name in small caps? It's iPod photo, not iPod Photo, it's iPod mini, not iPod Mini, and it will be iPod video, not iPod Video.

And I'm fully aware that the miniss will most likely be updated close to MWSF 2006, and then the regular iPod in the summer. My point is, when the iPod video (or whatever) becomes the regular iPod like the iPod photo did, in the summer, it will likely drop to $300 or so, and then that's when I'll probably buy. And that's a year off right? I don't want to buy an iPod photo now for $300 only to have it last a year, but I'm fine with getting an iPod mini for $180 now, and having it last a year or so.

Getting the Mini is by no way "settling". It's a far more solid product.

I usually leave around a Gig's worth of free space on my Mini to use for transferring files.

It sounds to me like you're just trying to justify your purchase. For some people, buying an iPod mini would be "settling". For $50 more, you 2.5x the storage (if you're looking at a 6 GB mini), a color screen, and photo capabilities. For the people that don't need these features, the iPod mini is great. For others, though, the regular iPod is the way to go.

Where did I get the capitalization wrong? Anyway I don't think the video iPod will become the standard in 1 year. More like 1 1/2, 2 years. But that's just me. I just bought my 20GB for 160€, so whatever.

Yep you're right, I think the better deal is definitely the regular iPod. You get more space, a color screen, photo compatibility, a wall charger. And I for one DO like the looks of the iPod.

Yeah, whatever. :)

If that's the case, why will anyone buy iPod Photo anymore?

Well technically they wont since they simply changed the naming scheme. There's no need to make the "Photo" differentiation now that all of those regular (non-Shuffle/non-mini) iPods have colour screens. :)

That's silly. Everyone justifies a purchase such as an iPod! What I'm trying to do is sell you on the merits of the iPod Mini. I know exactly what it DOESN'T have. What I prefer, in order of importance is:

1) Size. It's HALF the size of the 20 gig iPod. Less than half! This is HUGE to me. My pockets are full enough.

2) Style and industrial design. This thing is a solid brick and a washed out green is one of my favorite colors. Mine gets beat to crap every day and cleans up with Fantastic. Tough and reliable and I'd never DREAM of putting some silly protective skin on it.

That's it. Larger disk size, color screen? They don't matter to me. I wouldn't use them anyhow. If someday an iPod comes out with a 3" x 2" color screen, then maybe I'd be tempted to get one of those as a digital wallet. The current screens are like giving people those crappy postage stamp sized class pictures.... Uhhh... thanks but no thanks.

I'd rather have my Mini than a 60 gig iPod photo, unless I was allowed to sell the iPod photo, buy a Mini, and keep the rest as beer money! :D
