If Apple wants to appeal to a worldwide market (which, let's face it, is larger than the US market) then DAB is the way to go. Here in the UK, at least, FM will be phased out over the new few years.

I'd love an iPod with a DAB radio

Radio iPod mentioned on Hollywood show

I was watching Access Hollywood or Entertainment Tonight (can't rememeber which) on Friday afternoon and they were doing a brief interview with Lindsay Lohan's sister - I believe her name is Dakota. They asked what work she had done recently and she mentioned starring in a video with her sister and doing a commercial for a new radio iPod. Anyone else happen to see the same show? I was kind of shocked to hear the news but maybe they thought the show would air after MacWorld. Not sure exactly what it means but sounds like something is on the way.

Makes even more sense....

TVGenius, the patent information you discovered is very interesting, and I would be interested to see what either Reuters or Bloomberg may be reporting in the next few days/weeks....

Also of note, while all posters have mentioned many diverse and interesting ways Apple might incorporate radio into the iPod, no one mentioned that you can actually buy a lanyard-like device that can be attached to your iPod already. I think the brand is Digisette, and the item is called FMXtra. The Apple store in Short Hills had it a little over 6 months ago, but when I inquired about it recently at the Menlo Park store, the salesperson had no knowledge that such a device even existed.
This also lends even more credence to what TVGenius uncovered about the patent --because, if they're planning to merge with the satelite market, they would try to disassociate from a device which would allow only FM broadcast into the iPod.

Also, does anyone recall the earliest incarnations of the Sony Walkman, where the actual AM/FM tuner was an extra cassete you could install/remove, depending on whether you wanted the tuner or cassette function?

"XM would make much more sense than Sirius."

Why? XM's got their own portable device, and XM reception is much more difficult out of the big cities than Sirius. Sirius uses an orbit which places their satellites right overhead so the signal isn't blocked as easily. Still, XM does have a better repeater network and a portable (hand held type thing) is best in range of repeaters. I know I have Sirius just for the better reception up in the mountains where XM is relatively easily blocked. I can't think of any reason why XM would make a better portable device option than Sirius myself, other than the stronger repeater network (but I'm hundreds of miles from the nearest XM or Sirius repeater so Sirius is better for me :p ).

not going to happen. no chance. apple realise there's a worldwide market for iPods, so why make a satellite radio version - as it'll only have a CHANCE of selling in the usa.

it would be the same as making a "superbowl ipod" like the u2 one - u2 have worldwide appeal, so it works. only the americans give a flying rats ass about the superbowl, nobody watches it outside the states, and few people even know what sport it is in conjunction with (funnily enough, one that nobody even PLAYS outside the usa!). so that would just be a bad idea from the start. like the satellite ipod.

XM radio rocks my face in half.

i really haven't used my ipod much since i got XM actually. 220 stations commercial free. several jazz stations. rock stations. death metal stations.

and i dont have to hear beyonce every 3 minutes.

tell clearchannel to kiss my satellite ass.
