I agree that file mgmt on the iPad can be a pain. I prefer to use 3rd party solutions - FileBrowser for Business for general file management and Photo Manager Pro for photo store and display. The latter supports folder structures and direct import/export over WiFi. I don't use the native Photos app at all.

Interesting, thanks for bringing that up. I’ll admit I use the standard photos app and it’s good enough for my use but I’ll take a look at Photo Manager Pro just to see what it offers.

I am a linux engineer, and when I want to unplug or just read I find it more enjoyable on an iOS device because I just don't really have to manage it like you do a desktop/laptop. Just nice to step down to something simple sometimes.
But the iPP is just an optional fun device for me. If I were getting it as a main use device I'd get the MBA.

Did you get the 11 or 12.9?

I like it, really works well for what I want. I like to see real file names with my photos for one thing.

hi both.

Do you use PMP in conjunction with the built-in photo app, or PMP exclusively?

At present I use my MBP to edit the “info” adding descriptions, tags, locations etc for photos taken with iPhone, screenshots, etc....I can then use the photos app search facility to find photos easily.

Looking at the screenshots do your photos within the photos app appear in PMP, or just those specifically imported?

I use PMP exclusively for photos I want to keep on my iPad. I use the Photos app only when forced to for some reason. Only those photos imported from the Photos app will show up in PMP.

Edit: I would add that PMP is not a full capability DAM - I don't believe such a thing exists for iOS. I do my major photo management on a PC or laptop with other tools and maintain storage and backup there. I only have on the iPad those particular favorites I want access to on it locally - probably about 1500-2000 of the many thousands of photos I have.

thanks for the reply....very useful.

think I’ll continue “indexing” my photos on my MBP.

Just depends on what you want to use it for and if you want macOS or iPadOS. Personally, I think most people today are better off with the iPad Pro. Better screen, just as fast, better security, better app selection, better for drawing, better for gaming, no upkeep, better for mobility, and better ecosystem. I enjoyed the challenge of migrating from macOS to iPadOS and I think it’s worthwhile in the end. You’ll be better suited for the future.

I went with 12.9 1TB cellular model. I have a 2nd gen 12.9in pro and really like it. I was tempted to go smaller this time around but thinking the form factor shrinkage from 2nd to 4th gen will be a nice enough shrinkage to where it’ll feel a little more usable outside of home.

Why should i buy the ipp 12.9 if MBA has:

larger screen
cheaper
magic keyboard
better battery

thanks!

If you prefer macOS, or if you need it more - it’s obvious you should get a MacBook Air. Also, if it’s your only computer, it’s probably more versatile and better for a lot of situations.

However, iPad does have certain advantages. It can be both a tablet and a laptop replacement (in many ways), it has a higher quality screen, it has better cameras, it has the Apple Pencil, and some apps are exclusive to iPadOS (and vice versa, depending on what you need).

Personally, I love both Macs and iPads. But it really comes down to personal needs and preference. For me, I have room for both a Mac and an iPad in my life.

I priced out both with the specs I’d like and they’re basically identical in pricing. The problem is I’m having a difficult time deciding which route to go...I’ve owned several iPads, but never a Mac. For the money, what is the better device?

iPad Pro 12.9” WI-Fi
256gb
Magic keyboard

MacBook Air 13”
256gb
i7 processor
16gb RAM

Can you do everything you need to do on either one? Are all of the apps you need/want on both and with the functionality you need? Can you work with the file system on the iPad? Do you have peripherals you need to use? As unshamedgeek says, "better device" is subjective and we can't say for you.

The real question is why you want an iPad Pro ?
If you want to do computer-related stuff, go buy a computer, if not, go for an iPad Pro
It is two complementary tools

And both are computers. Just like the Apple Watch and the iPhone.
Not necessarily personal computers of course ;)
